GRAMMY-winning producer and songwriter Tourist (William Phillips) has just released Music Is Invisible, his sixth studio album. Out now through Queens Road Music / AndRECORDS / Atlantic Records, the 11-track project is his clearest move yet into high-energy trance territory.

After spending the past few years leaning into introspective, downtempo electronic work, Tourist flips the script here. The record is built on driving 140-BPM rhythms, layered synth arpeggios, and long, euphoric breakdowns that feel designed for warehouse systems rather than headphones.

The album starts with ‘Invisible‘ ft. Julianna Barwick, a long, dreamy track full of soft vocals and warm chords that slowly lift you up. Then ‘Outside’ hits hard with fast arpeggios and a catchy vocal chop that bounces around. ‘Embrace‘ brings big supersaw melodies and a driving bassline that makes you want to move. ‘The Light In Others‘ keeps the energy with bright, scattered synths that feel warm and open. ‘Sparks’ is tighter and punchier, with sharp drums and a lead that keeps flickering in and out. Julianna Barwick comes back on ‘Capricorn,’ a calmer track with her airy voice over a steady, chilled beat. ‘In Unison‘ is the hardest one—fast, aggressive, and built for big rooms with a massive drop. ‘Love In Silence‘ ft. Real Lies adds spoken vocals and a darker, cruising vibe. ‘Veil‘ goes straight back to full-speed trance with that Grimes sample chopped over a relentless kick. The album ends with ‘Protector (Reprise)‘—just quiet piano and soft reversed sounds that fade everything out gently.

One of the most popular party destinations globally gets hit with firm regulations. Ibiza and Mallorca see new rules implemented regarding alcohol consumption, directly affecting the tourist population.

According to DJ Mag, restrictions will affect both islands, which means the hotspot resort areas will be too. It is terrible news for those all-day partiers and drinkers since all restaurants, bars, and resorts can only serve three drinks at lunch or dinner per customer and six maximum daily.

The restrictions don’t stop there; the government has also banned balcony hopping or jumping off them into pools, probably best for everyone’s safety. Now tourists are at risk of facing fines between €1000 and €6000. On the other hand, establishments could receive fines between €60,001 to €600,000, along with three-year closures.

These moves intend to change the stigma around Ibiza as a binge-drinking and weekend-bender center for the world. Moreover, looking toward the future, this newly added set of restrictions is here to stay or at least until 2025 (DJ Mag).

If you’re traveling to the Balearic Islands or just interested in learning more, check in with the local government for additional information.

When they released their new single with The Weeknd last November, it was the first gift of new music they have given us since the group reformed last July. Since then, it has enjoyed hundreds of thousands of streams and a host of new remixes including those by Chris Lake, and Tourist.

Now, ZHU is taking his turn to remix the new banger. In an instagram story a few days ago, ZHU showed a sneak peak of a dropbox file titled ‘SHMXWEEKN…HU(zlab).mp3’. While we cannot confirm that this is truly a ‘Moth To A Flame’ remix at this time. All of the evidence seems to suggest that this 8-minute track will be just that.

We will keep you updated with this story as it progresses, and hopefully we will have a ZHU-style remix available soon.

As we step into 2020 and a new decade, it’s certainly worth taking a closer look at the last ten years in the music world. 2019 is the close to a decade that has arguably been the best in EDM history and in some ways, for electronic music in general.

Many tracks, artists, genres, events and trends have shaped the scene into how we know it today. But, we will keep all these other important factors for other articles. Here, we focus on the essence of it all – the music – by answering the question: What are the tracks that marked 2019, and the end of the 2010s?

Our team at EDMTunes has compiled what we consider to be the top 100 tracks of the year. It is worth noting that more than 10,000 tracks are released every week on Beatport, in addition to many others dropped on Soundcloud, Bandcamp, and as vinyl-only. This makes the task of putting together an objective, and all-satisfying ranking quite impossible. There are so many other tracks outside of this list that we love and groove to.

In this compilation, we took into consideration the quality of the production of course, but we also include the most symbolic and iconic tracks that represent the year 2019.

Without further ado, with the artists in alphabetical order, we present our selection of the best tracks of 2019 along with links to their respective coverage articles. Additionally, you can enjoy them all in our dedicated EDMTunes Spotify Playlist available down below.

Looking Towards 2020

2019 has undoubtedly been one of the best years for Tech-house and for Techno in the 2010s, and it doesn’t seem to be stopping just yet. The year also witnessed an EDM comeback, fueled mostly by the SHM reunion, Tomorrowland’s 15th anniversary and many beautiful EDM new tracks. In the last year of this Electronic-Music-golden-decade, the releases lived up to the standards and kept the bar high.

Today we walk towards the 2020s with a lot of uncertainty about the artists, genres, events, and trends that will shape the dancefloor. But one thing is certain – electronic music is here to stay.

Let us know what you think of our list, and if there’s any other tracks you think also deserve to be part of it. Don’t forget to check out our other end-of-the-year and decade editorials. Happy New Year, and cheers to 2020 and a new phase for electronic music growth.

Ibiza’s Council To Apply Restrictions To Entertainment Offer

Recent amendments to the Tourist Law in Ibiza are not giving very promising news to those who like to go to the island to eat, sleep, rave and repeat. Once the amendment takes effect, the local council will have the power to “regulate, determine or prohibit, in a reasonable manner, tourist activities”, which include (but are not limited to) night clubs, beach clubs and cafés.

For many decades now, the White Isle has been worldly well known for its ideallic scenery and endless nightlife. After the hippie era in the 60s and the 70s, Ibiza became more and more associated with the electronic music scene, when internationally acclaimed DJs started to come, year after year, to perform unforgettable sets until the sunrise in beautiful decorated spots along the beach. This, led gradually to the current situation, in which the music entertainment offer in the island is so dense that seems to attempt against the relaxing environment, as Vincent Torres, Ibiza’s Council Director of Tourism, said:

“Such a previously liberal law offered the opportunity for activities that are incompatible with the day-to-day life of an island that wants a sustainable kind of tourism.”

In relation to the reason of the changes to the law, Vincent Torres added that: “It was very clear that the tourism law needed to be modified”, and that establishing the new criteria would certainly regulate the “lack of control” in the moderation of events. Although the amendments to the law are not retroactive, it states also that local municipalities will have the power to enforce an even more severe policy of restriction if desired, which means that once it takes effect, more restrictive measures might be applied.

The modification to the law has been proposed by the socialist party PSOE, and it affects not only Ibiza but also Mallorca, Menorca and Formentera. This said, potential new venues in the Balearic islands will bear with the risk of having their events banned, if they are considered to interfere with the peace of the islands.

Tourist – U

This album took me by surprised, to be totally honest. I’d been intrigued by Tourist after hearing To Have You Back & Run, two of the advance singles. But I didn’t expect the rest of the album to be inventive, risk-taking & exacting. This isn’t your next festival rage anthem, nor is it the best pre-gaming music, but I wager this will find a surprisingly recurrent place on your playlists. Tourist is a thoughtful, evocative & forward looking producer who deserves your attention, as evidenced by this accomplishment of an album.

While U takes its sweet time warming up, To Have You Back is a moody, gorgeous triumph. Hymnal vocal modifications drop into one of the more cinematic, emotional drops I’ve heard in some time. It’s gratifying in a visceral way that we haven’t heard since Disclosure at their best & James Blake at his most heartbroken.
Run pulls some of that fabled euphoric into some indie house. If those words sound like they don’t belong in the same sentence, it’s because they don’t. Run is going to stick in my head for a long time. The build shimmers while the break bobs along effortlessly. It feels like a cross between easy listening, the part of tropical house before the steel drum drop, and some old school UK 2-step/Garage. The house beat the tune settles into will infect everyone in the room. Turn it on and see how many people stop you to ask what it is about 60% through the song. You’ll see what I mean.

The second half of the album is one of the reasons I elevate this release from something I’ll listen to, to something I make sure to have easy access to. My Love is a chunky, melancholic gear change in the album. It’s also a great reminder that the poppy vibe from Run isn’t something that stays with you all the time. Perfectly executed & helpful on a rainy day, it’s gonna show up in UK deep sets before Memorial Day.

The moody drop in My Love makes Waves a better track, and reminds the listener why albums are still put together. Waves takes its sweet time getting to where it’s going, but when it gets there, it’s got this ethereal, vintage vibe that makes me think of Kaskade’s Atmosphere. Yea, it’s that good, and it doesn’t overstate its welcome. Moving along at a great clip, the 6min apex of the album provides tiers of builds & drops that you’d expect from a competent mix. Not sure if it would fit more at sunrise or masterfully woven into a Prydz set. Someone ask Eric would ya?

Too Late pairs the peppy bassline from earlier in the album with the rainy, “just got dumped” feeling found elsewhere. The oddly hopeful track that results is a low key favorite, and we’re already seeing this style to propagate on festival lineups. Expect more of it.

Separate Ways continues the fusion of peppy & Eeyore to full effect. The vocal modulations perfuse through the echoing bass, giving the track a UK Garage body with a Gotye crust. Solid, inventive work that I can’t wait to hear more of.

For Sarah rounds out the LP, and it’s a gem. The shimmering chords seem to acquire a choir (get your friends to say that out loud for fun & profit), pushing out some heavy, almost R&B vibes. The tranquil, chilled build doesn’t break into anything rough & tumble, but adds some scintillating chords that almost sound like 80’s guitar. Wonderful work, I officially cannot wait to hear more from Tourist, and am jealous of all you UK people for having access to him. I bet his live sets make people cry & text their ex Drake style. Oh, and it’s a free download for a couple more days. Don’t say we never gave you anything.

Coachella just announced its lineup for its annual April festival in Indio, California.
The amount and diversity of electronic artists on this lineup attests to the past success Coachella has had with electronic music. Although there are still plenty of punk and indie rock bands as well as representatives from the rap and hip-hop communities, electronic music is now a large part of the Coachella lineup, making it a major destination for dance music fans and artists alike. Goldenvoice shies away from booking artists back-to-back years (they booked Dillon Francis and Disclosure in 2013 and 2014) and this year, they’ve booked Alesso and Deorro after they performed last spring.

Along with the official lineup announcement, Coachella announced that tickets for both weekends will go on sale tomorrow, January 7th, at 12:00pm noon PST. Register now for tickets and set your alarms because passes are sure to go faster than the 2015 advance sale last May. Learn how to purchase tickets through Coachella’s official site here.

Sometimes made available in its freebase form, characterized as having the sheen of a matte-white powder, white heroin can easily be mistaken for cocaine, and has recently been identified as the cause of death of three tourists in the Amsterdam area. Several more tourists were subsequently hospitalized with life-threatening conditions after using the said substance. With Time Warp NL 2014 approaching this weekend, visitors and locals alike are being urged to stay away from street dealers. Representatives from Unity NL (an alcohol and drug information organization) will be on call this weekend at Time Warp along with ambulances, as a necessary precaution. Check out the official informational flyer released by the GGD Amsterdam Public Health Service below:

This past year was undoubtedly an explosive year for electronic music. 2013 saw the rise of many artists, old and new alike. Electronic music festivals became bigger and better by extending their reach to various cities and countries, as well as stepping up the production game. Many popular electronic tracks finally found their way to mainstream radio extending the reach of EDM like never before. We could debate all day about whether all this is good for the longevity of the scene, but in retrospect, 2013 provided many opportunities for artists and electronic music fans that were never fully available until now.

The electronic music scene’s new found visibility and extended opportunities has producers and DJs popping up left and right trying to be the next big thing. There is an overwhelming amount of talent out there and something for everyone. Here at EDMTunes we’ve compiled a short list of a few artists that have started making waves in 2013 and that we believe will reach their full potential in the coming year. This is by no means a comprehensive list, but rather a showcase of a few up and coming artists from the various genres of electronic music that we believe have bright futures in the up coming year. Time for some new music discovery, so put on your best set of headphones and enjoy!

Kygo

The young Norwegian producer, Kygo, made tidal waves on the EDM blog front in 2013 with his slow burning remixes of hit tracks from every genre. Infusing a melodic deep house style with the likes of Ellie Goulding, Dolly Parton, Marvin Gaye and The XX, to name a few, Kygo received great recognition from those in search of something away from the mainstream of electronic music. Seeing as how the electronic music scene is already starting to evolve backwards to deep house and the sound of the underground, Kygo is in the right place at the right time. Expect this young producer to bring us big things in 2014.

Tourist

Hailing from the U.K. comes a young classically trained producer by the name of William Philips otherwise known as, Tourist. Carving out a niche in the deeper complex sounds of the UK electronic music scene, Tourist fluidly blends layers of slow ethereal synths and emotive vocal samples over rhythmic percussion to create musically complex tracks that are liquid gold for the ears. The world took notice of his talent when Disclosure signed Tourist to their new label Method Records, which saw the recent release of his Patterns EP. Having graced many dance floors across the U.K., Tourist made a splash at HARD Day of the Dead on his small U.S. tour, delighting many listeners and swaying them to his hypnotic sounds. Tourist is definitely an artist to watch for the new year and has landed himself a spot at Ultra Music Festival 2014.

Syn Cole

As one of the newest additions to Avicii’s esteemed label, LE7ELS, Estonian producer Syn Cole had a lot to prove in 2013. He made his debut at U.K.’s Creamfields festival and from there on out has had Avicii behind him as a mentor. Syn Cole’s sound emulates that of the LE7ELS brand with addictive melodies and plenty of dance inducing drops. Recently taking on Avicii’s ‘Hey Brother’, Syn Cole remixed the folk/electronic track into a big room hit with bright melodies and dubby breaks and twists which caught everyone’s attention. He may have a limited amount of tracks at this point, but be sure to count on this Avicii protégé to make 2014 his year and become a household name.

AMTRAC

During the summer of 2013, Kentucky DJ/Producer AMTRAC took on the task of remixing Kaskade’s hit track, ‘Atmosphere‘, giving it a groovy house makeover. The successful remix put AMTRAC on the radar and he was given the chance to join Kaskade on his iconic Atmosphere Tour in the fall. Opening each show and after party for Kaskade on the tour, AMTRAC laid down fantastic sets that brilliantly featured his deeper, tech-infused house sound. This lanky producer knows how to lay down a groove with his arsenal of original tracks and remixes and has been tearing up U.S. dance floors left and right all the way into 2014. Keep an eye out for him on multiple festival and club bills in the New Year.

MitiS

MitiS has been on our radar since the Fall of 2012, when his intense & original synth work took Soundcloud & MrSuicideSheep by storm. Since then, he’s been responsible for electro, chillstep, drumstep, drum & bass, dubstep, trance and progressive house productions, and it’s all been quality stuff. This is a kid that’s able to work in any tempo and still brings a signature sound that’s immediately identifiable. He recently crafted a gorgeous drum and bass track back in December in remembrance of a lost friend, take that for example. Check out our interview with the rising star.

The Chainsmokers

If you haven’t already heard of the Chainsmokers, follow them on twitter, facebook and souncloud right now because it’s going to be a huge year for this duo. Alex Pall and Drew Taggart hit the ground running hard in 2013 with an arsenal of remixes that all ended up charting in the top 3 on Hype Machine (a great deal of them are available for free), playing prestigious venues like the Marquee Las Vegas & New York and performing at festivals like TomorrowWorld. No matter what genre they pull from, the Chainsmokers manage to give it their own notable touch that’s beyond infectious; their most notable remix of 2013 was their take on The Wanted’s “We Own the Night” and has been played +830k times on soundcloud alone. They’ve played with the likes of Avicii, Calvin Harris, Pete Tong and Steve Aoki and garnered support from greats like Tiësto, W&W and Adventure Club. Can’t forget to mention that they’re the funniest crew to hit the scene since Dillon Francis. Looking for two DJs that stay in touch with their fans, produce incredible music, and aren’t going anywhere but up? Look no further, the Chainsmokers are here to stay and they’re going to be here in a big way in 2014.

Ilan Bluestone

Another meteroic rising star upon the horizon of 2014 is none other than British export Ilan Bluestone. As one who has been on EDMTunes’ radar since “The New Guard,” Bluestone has proven our instincts right time and again with a continual release of blockbuster productions and remixes. Early tracks like “Namaste“, “Capetown” and “Sinai” helped to carve out his initial niche in the electronic music world with Bluestone’s signature almost African plains inspired melodic touch. Most recently having multiple tracks featured in ABGT050 and garnering weekly radio show support from the likes of Armin, Above & Beyond, Gareth Emery and many more…Bluestone’s star is only beginning to reach its peak arc. 2014 has seen the release of “Spheres” as well as his remix of Progresia’s “Fire, Fire, Fire” and of Mat Zo’s “Lucid Dreams“, and one may conjecture that many more progressive, thumping and euphorically imbued productions are in the works. The Anjunabeats wunderkind is finally beginning to get some wind behind his sails, and here’s hoping that we are treated to a debut album or a US tour in the (very) near future! Keep an ear on this one, peeps.

Steerner

Stolkholm native Steerner is known for his uplifting progressive house sound. Numerous music critics have found his sound to be similar to Avicii’s for his addictive melodies. His music has already been supported by an array artists, including Adventure Club and Dannic. With his rapidly growing fan base and extensive blog support across the board, Steerner is primed for a stellar year. He primarily cranked out bootlegs this year, but recently released his debut original and it has been a hit! Check out his inner-Avicii below.

Henry Fong

Don’t let the dreadlocks fool you… or the fact that he shreds waves for a hobby during his downtime away from the studio. Whether it was touring alongside the biggest names in dance music such as Dada Life, Tritonal and Clockwork or dishing out some of the year’s most massive tunes, the Florida-raised, LA-based DJ/producer made some serious headlines last year and will undoubtedly be doing the same in 2014. Compared to the other freshmen on this roster, Henry Fong perhaps had the most successful year in terms of original productions and remixes. Label releases such as ‘Hot Steppa’, ‘Revival’, and ‘Get Down’ helped him gain recognition from the some of dance music’s heaviest hitters. His distinct electro sound has earned him the spotlight this past year, and if he continues to push at the pace he’s been moving at, then we’re projecting nothing but greatness for the young producer.

Collin McLoughlin

There is nothing that yells ‘talent’ more then a producer who can sing as well. Collin McLoughlin brings both to his electro-heavy tracks making him a worthy addition to our 2014 artist to watch list. The Dallas-based producer has garnered over 15 million views on his Youtube channel and runs a successful SoundCloud page with tracks that cover over various genres from progressive house to dubstep; proving his versatility. Not only does McLoughlin produce his awesome tracks, he sings in them as well. He demonstrated his vocal gifts when he joined rockstar Adam Levine’s team on the 3rd season of the The Voice, and his newest project has his vocals featured with Laidback Luke and Project 46 titled ‘Collide’. His remixes display his brilliance in producing also. His remix of Coldplay’s ‘Fix You’ is currently his most popular track and features a melodic signature sound with a synth-filled bassline and unique vocal loops that reinvent this popular track. With a new releases and brand new projects with huge stars awaiting him in 2014, we recommend you keep an eye out for this amazingly talented young vocalist and producer.

As of late, a lot of electronic music has started to sound the same. In response, there has been a call for artists to stand out from the quagmire of lackluster productions. Hailing from London comes a classically trained producer by the name of Tourist who has carved out a niche in the deeper complex sounds of the UK electronic music scene. Tourist fluidly blends layers of slow ethereal synths and emotive vocal samples over rhythmic percussion to create musically complex tracks that are liquid gold for the ears.

Tourist is definitely an artist to watch for the new year, he has recently been featured on NPR and on his last jaunt in the US was able to delight listeners at HARD Day Of The Dead alongside fellow UK artists Maya Jane Coles and Dusky. Tourist recently signed onto Disclosure’s label, Method, to release his upcoming EP, Patterns, set to release in early 2014.

Tourist is now on a return tour of the US to play three small shows in New York, Miami and Los Angeles. If you love the deeper chill sounds of the underground, Tourist is not to be missed:

12/5 – Brooklyn, NY @ Rough Trade (tix HERE)

12/6 – Miami, FL @ Grand Central (No Sale/RSVP Only)

12/7- Los Angeles, CA @ The Lyric Theater (tix HERE)

Here’s a preview of what to expect from Tourist live. Check out Tourist’s remixes of tracks by Indie artists CHVRCHES, Haim and Sam Smith, all of which have charted to #1 on Hype Machine.
