Bassnectar, once a titan of the Electronic music scene with a hit remix of Ellie Goulding’s ‘Lights’, has become a polarizing figure due to serious allegations of sexual misconduct and grooming of underage fans. From Our Minds is the next evolutionary step in Richie Hawtin’s lifelong commitment to support the development of the electronic music scene. Earlier this year, the tour made its North American debut in the birthplace of Techno, Detroit, and made its way to a series of sold-out crowds in warehouses in Toronto, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and more across eight dates. ‘The Revival Show’ was subjected to an astounding tide of backlash online. The result was a speedy cancelation a few days later. Datsik’s last outing, billed as ‘The Ninja Tour’ in 2018 was eclipsed by mind-boggling allegations spanning across multiple women. These accusations paved the way for future cancelations and his resultant disappearance from the scene.

Following the cancellation of the show, he’s reformatted it and scheduled it for June 9th:

Datsik had faced criticism for the lack of complete acknowledgment of the seriousness of these allegations or issuing an apology. The actions included taking advantage of intoxicated women on his tour bus and distributing signs that spelled “tulsa,” which formed the word “a sl*t” when viewed in a mirror. Consequently, Datsik’s agency and management company, Deckstar and Circle Talent Agency, terminated their association with him.

Troy aka Datsik did not let these obstacles hinder his creativity and continued producing music. He released a new album titled ‘Afterlife’ in April. It still remains unpredictable when or if ever he is able to re-establish a hold in the industry. The progress of such an action would be determined about the public opinion to accept such an artist back in the groove.

Swedish House Mafia are on fire, and completely back on the spotlight worldwide by now. After a very successful Ultra Miami set, and ahead of shows scheduled for Creamfields South and North in the UK, Kappa FuturFestival in Northern Italy, and even a show in Malmö, Sweden, the boys announced they will be returning to Latin America towards the end of the year, for a much-needed visit to the southern part of the continent.

Through their social media platforms, they posted not only the news but the flyers too, along with the caption “South America we’ve been missing you!! It’s finally time for us to come back! Everyone knows you’re one of the best crowds in the world… Let’s make up for lost time and create new memories together“.

I’ve already talked about how wonderful is to be able to party in Argentina, but in case you haven’t read my Marsh in Buenos Aires or my Spencer Brown in Buenos Aires articles, here’s my self-quote about the topic:

“Argentina is one of the best places around the world to hold a party. Its people work wonders. Parties don’t usually start before midnight, and the tonic here is to dance, quite literally, all night long. If the sun is rising behind the de la Plata river (I’m specifically talking Buenos Aires here), you still have a while to go before leaving. That’s how incredible the parties are over here.” -Yours truly.

February was ending, and Summer in the Southern Hemisphere was already waving its goodbyes. We had lost all hope that Above & Beyond would return to Argentina this year. And as we were packing our things until next year, the news came: they would come. They always play Buenos Aires either in January or February, so it was quite odd for us to see they would arrive mid-April. But no one was complaining. On the contrary, the excitement was off the charts, so much so that tickets sold out mere minutes after they came out.

Fast forward to last week, Jono and Paavo were in charge of giving Argentina the first Group Therapy experience since January 18th, 2020 (that one would also be among their last sets worldwide before the world went silent). And they sure succeeded.

The Venue

The place chosen for this event was Mandarine Park, one of Buenos Aires’ core open-air venues. Located in the Punta Carrasco area, right on the coast, this property has seen countless A&B shows and several other Trance and EDM artists, so it’s no stranger to a good party.

For good measure, here’s a picture from 2019’s Above & Beyond show, the last one in Buenos Aires until last week (2020’s show was played in Mar del Plata):

The Night

The event started at 11:00 PM. Opening the night was Belu Clavero, who warmed the night up with a wave of Organic House until 01:00 AM. Next up, Tomás Heredia followed the vibe, upping the tempo and darkening the style a tad until 02:30 AM. And then, came the masters. Paavo Siljamäki and Jono Grant hopped onto the stage, waving and walking to the rhythm of their remix for Dirty Vegas‘ ‘Tonight‘, a track made popular for its appearance in their own Anjunabeats Volume 7 compilation.

Boy, was the night just starting.

Marsh‘s ‘Reminiscent‘, Genix & Dosem‘s brand new ‘Day City‘, Paavo’s own ‘Let You Go‘, Above & Beyond’s new ‘Angry JP8‘, and many, many more tunes were blasted to the Buenos Aires crowd for a breathtaking two and a half hours of A&B set. Actually, I’ve curated a playlist with a rough estimate of the tracklist — take away some unreleased IDs, such as the premiere of Jerome Isma-Ae‘s tear-inducing remix of ‘Sun In Your Eyes‘. Jono and Paavo gave their 110% as well. Jumping with us, dancing with us, singing with us, and having the best reunion we could have after more than three years of being separated. Paavo made a symbolic Push The Button with an Argentinian flag in his hand during ‘Blue Sky Action‘, and also a second PTB occurred with people from the crowd, during ‘Sun & Moon‘. Two or three more tracks came by, and just like that, their set was over. The night flew. People hugging everywhere, crowd chanting, teary eyes filled the place at times. The guys never disappoint.

After they left the stage, Heredia came in for the last hour of music, and at 6 AM, we embarked on our different journeys home. From home to home, because being at an A&B show is being at home.

Final Words

Did we have a great time last Saturday? You be the judge. I’d say we did. And I’d say Jono and Paavo did too. The latter wrote a couple of times, in big, capital letters, “TE AMO ARGENTINA” (“I love you Argentina“).

Let’s start from the beginning: Argentina is one of the best places around the world to hold a party. Its people work wonders. Parties don’t usually start before midnight, and the tonic here is to dance, quite literally, all night long. If the sun is rising behind the de la Plata river (I’m specifically talking Buenos Aires here), you still have a while to go before leaving. That’s how incredible the parties are over here.

Back in June last year, Tom Marshall, commonly referred to as Marsh, came to Buenos Aires to play. Boy was it good. He played a world of amazing tunes, opening with fan favourite ‘Little Darling’, going through many of his best tunes, original and remixes, and closing with none other than his remix for Armin van Buuren and Susana’s all-time classic ‘Shivers’. Incredible night. We waved our goodbyes and hoped we’d get to see him again somewhere around a year later, which is approximately how frequently artists come to Argentina.

And yet, only a few months later, he announced he’d come back. And let me tell you, what a night this one was.

Marsh’s Second Buenos Aires Show

Yeah, that’s right: this show was only his second time visiting the Land of Tango. His Argentina debut happened on that cold night in June of 2022. He played at 2GTHR, a beautiful venue located right beside the river, located in an area here in Buenos Aires known as Costa Salguero. And this time, he came back to the same place, thirsty for a second round.

2GTHR

Born in late 2021, 2GTHR is a Deep House and Progressive oriented place, which functions as a branch of Club Morocco. It only opens on Fridays, but has a heavy schedule and makes sure to make the most out of every night. They’ve brought several top-notch artists to play such as Korolova, Eelke Kleijn, Tinlicker, Ferreck Dawn, and, of course, Marsh.

The place has a very elegant and almost ethnic-like vibe to it, with it displaying different patterns on the walls, black-painted steel sofas and other subtle decorations. Towards the DJ area, impressive screens will blow your mind as they span all the width of the place, effectively covering the whole of the booth, and much more.

As for the back terrace (because, yes, this place has two different ambients), it’s a modest sized place with wooden floor, almost like a dock-like structure, which functions as a second stage out on the open. From there you can see the river and enjoy the cold wind after a while of dancing inside.

Marsh, March 31st, 2GTHR Buenos Aires

Opening and carrying the night were KINOPIO (00:00-02:00) and Paul Deep (02:00-03:30). Tom went behind the decks from 03:30 and ran a jaw-dropping set until almost 07:00. Yup, that’s right: Seven in the morning.

Marsh’s set was a ride, and a great one as well. It was far from being the linear journey one is used to hear from most DJs, in the sense that there’s only one way to move forwards, and that is increasing BPMs and turning to darker and darker tracks each time. Tom didn’t follow that rule: even though he did slowly walk up the tempo of the set, the energy and the melodic aspects of the set were played with and carried throughout.

His set opened with Joris Voorn‘s remix for his own ‘Little Darling‘, and showcased many songs from his latest album Endless, of which I recall hearing ‘Hymn‘, ‘Forgiveness‘, ‘Reminiscent‘, ‘Touch The Sky‘, ‘All Night Long‘, ‘Fragments‘, and ‘Fall To Pieces‘, among others. Ezequiel Arias‘ unreleased remix of ‘Blue‘ also made the cut. Not-album-related, songs like ‘Heaven‘, his otherworldly remix of ‘The Whiteroom‘, Grum & Tigerblind‘s rendition of ‘Shout‘, SØNIN‘s ‘Affection‘, and his, erm, AMAZING remix of the Bongo Song aka ‘Played-A-Live‘. Another savoury treat Tom dropped on the dancefloor was an upcoming remix for Above & Beyond‘s OceanLab – Sirens Of The Sea. Won’t spoil it to you, but I think I never stopped moving and singing during that track. Before you ask, yes, he did close his set with ‘Endless‘, the final track of the album. As to whether I cried or not during that last track, while having my favourite song of the LP played as the sunrays entered through the side glass walls towards the river… that will be left unsaid.

Final Words

All in all, as we expected, Marsh did not disappoint, and neither did the venue. In fact, they were so kind they let me have a picture with Tom! Props to him as well for being such a warm guy. After recently announcing a 39-hour celebration in honor of the venue’s 22nd birthday, the party is just about to get started. Continuum will launch its first show at the London club on November 20-22. The event series will embark from 2021 to 2022.

This first event of the series will welcome performers such as Rebekah, Blawan, and Dave Clarke. Fabric promises guests 24+ hours of uninterrupted music for the event.

In case fans are unable to make it to the first event. the second show will take place on December 11 – 13. Techno lovers will see epic performances by artists Batu, Voigt.Mas., Sugar Free, and more.

“Back in the day fabric used to do [24-hour parties] and the idea now is to bring it back in, to be able to cater for completely different crowds,” said fabric Creative Director Jorge Neito. “It presents a lot of opportunities that you wouldn’t have on a regular night. It gives the opportunity to bring up-and-coming or mid-range artists and put them in-between heavyweight acts so they get the exposure they wouldn’t get on a normal night.”
