The Commissions of Justice, Health and Legislative Studies of the Mexican Senate has generally approved the recreational use of marijuana. This marks a milestone towards the complete legalization of Cannabis in Mexico.

The United Justice, Health and Legislative Studies commissions generally approved the opinion issued by the Cannabis Regulation Act.
A discussion will follow this decision. One of the parties voted against the measure, and another cast a neutral vote. However, the party with the voting majority did so in favor. With 26 votes in favor and only 7 against, the measure reached approval.
The measure grants citizens the right to carry up to 28 grams of marijuana. It also establishes a 200-gram limit; anything larger could make you eligible for a fine. Another big point in the matter is the right to grow up to 4 plants in your home. To legalize recreational cannabis, you really need to legalize home growing.
It is important to note that this doesn’t mean everyone can start doing this immediately. The voting was only to approve the opinion, which will create the laws that will need to be voted on again. This means you can’t – and shouldn’t – light up a joint in a public park, as of now. The opinion also states that no one can smoke in public spaces or tobacco-free areas. Of course, it also only applies to people over 18 years of age, with fines that go up to $150,0000 in case of failure to comply.
