Pendulum Continues To Tease Sunday’s Ultra Performance

Only a few days stand between now and the triumphant and long-awaited return of the drum n bass/rock fusion band Pendulum. It wasn’t long ago that Rob Swire was quoted saying:

WE’RE CONTRACTED FOR ANOTHER ALBUM. I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT’S GOING TO HAPPEN. I DON’T REALLY WANT TO DO ONE – I’D PREFER TO WORK ON SOMETHING ELSE WITH KP OR PERHAPS A NEW PROJECT ALTOGETHER. IF I HAVE TO DO IT, THEN I WILL, BUT THAT’S NEVER A GREAT PLACE TO START MAKING MUSIC.

All hope was essentially lost of a reunion/new album from the esteemed group until December of last year when Ultra Music Festival announced that the full band would be performing at this year’s event.

All of this came to fruition in part to a brief performance at V Festival as El Hornet, Rob and Gareth surprised the crowd with their return to the same stage. This Sunday, March 20, at 9.40pm EST, Pendulum will be lighting up the Ultra crowd officially for the first time in over four years. In fact, attendees will be in for a treat, as the finale will be a joint performance with Rob and Gareth’s Knife Party. With this comes the hints of new material. In a tweet posted yesterday, there is indeed a remix that looks to be debuted during their set but without any indication of whom due to the name being crossed out.

In a video just released, the mood is set with a shot of a train exiting the screen while fading out to a hallway filled with plaques. Moving through the hallway and around the corner brings the viewers to a cracked door showcasing an eclectic array of musical equipment that is focused on one by one.

This writer is glad they’ve only been posting snippets while keeping the surprises in the bag until the concert begins. Back in 2009 at a SXSW event at La Zona Rosa, their performance was hands down one of the all around best musical experiences I’ve ever encountered. While there is no doubt that come Sunday, they will go above and beyond what I recall from that night in 2009, for myself and more than a handful of others, the bar is set quite high.
