]]> Just six months after its grand opening, SILO Dallas has been voted one of the Top 10 clubs in the U.S. and number 52 in DJ Mag’s 2025 “Top 100 Clubs in the World”—marking a major milestone for one of Texas’ most exciting new cultural destinations. Located in Dallas’ Design District, and Co-founded by legendary promoter James “Disco Donnie” Estopinal Jr. with Patrick Tetrick, SILO is one of the first venues purpose-built for immersive experiences, and its rise has been nothing short of meteoric. The venue was three years in the making, transforming a 1950s grain silo into a 32,000-square-foot audiovisual playground. Outfitted with a 100,000-watt D&B sound system, national-scale stage, immersive 2mm video wall, and flexible event spaces, SILO has quickly become a beacon for artists and fans alike.

In its debut season, SILO has hosted a jaw-dropping array of talent including Eric Prydz, FISHER, Tiësto, Charlotte de Witte, Deadmau5, Illenium, Black Coffee, Solomun, and more. Artists have flooded social media with praise.

With back-to-back sell outs and a diverse, genre-spanning lineup, SILO has proven it’s not just a venue—it’s a movement. The team has already begun expanding capacity from 3,145 to 5,000, with a wraparound mezzanine under construction and a second performance room underway in the backstage wing. ]]> That’s right, it’s already that time once again. Since 1993 DJ Mag has held the largest public voting music poll in the world. This is a fully open poll and anyone can be submitted. There is no entry criteria and the annual votes last year tallied in at over 1.3 Million.

Voting has begun, and you can find the link here — vote.djmag.com. You simply choose your top 5 DJs in rank order.

Polls will be open until midnight on September 14th, and the announcement of the Top 100 will come in late October during ADE in Amsterdam.

This year Unicef charity and Virtual DJ has partnered with DJ Mag. Unicef works with over 190 counties to give healthcare and education to the world’s children. And Virtual DJ is how a lot of producers and DJs get their sweet music to our ears.

]]> For those of you new to the concept, the DJ Mag Top 100 poll began in 1993 to determine the top DJs in the world. By 2015, the list cracked one million votes, making it the biggest music poll on the planet. Today it is one of the industry standards in the category of who’s who.

The list has had astonishing effects on the DJs. Those featured on the legendary Top 100 are able to leverage large booking fees and expand their notoriety. With many producers featuring targeted content to their listeners with the hope of more votes. It is entirely decided by how the public votes!

The list has also drawn criticism, most famously from Kaskade (who at the time was the number one ranked American DJ). If you look at the list, you’ll find he has been absent from it since 2015. Some suggest that the whole thing is a popularity contest, which has more to do with good marketing than actually performing live sets and producing fire tracks.

DJ Mag Top 100 will put on virtual festivals every weekend all the way through September 19th. Saturdays will be dedicated to the DJ Top 100 and will be dominated by EDM and Trance Styles (e.g. David Guetta, Steve Aoki, Afrojack). While Sundays will feature DJs from the Alternative Top 100, which factor in sales data from Beatport in addition to the DJ Mag votes. The alternative list will feature more peripheral sounds. Think more funk, breakbeat, and dark bass (e.g. Claptone, Fisher, Solomun) 

With mask mandates slowly creeping their way back into the culture this can be a good method to get your necessary fix of good music. Luckily, these virtual throw-downs are entirely watchable from your laptop, television, or smartphone. The festivals will be available on the platforms twitch, facebook, and youtube.

]]> Live Nation is switching gears and working to have more than 100 venues across the country turned into polling sites for this November’s elections. These large venues could be ideal spots as their size and layout allow for required social distancing. Live Nation owns over 100 venues across the United States but they’ve all set empty due to COVID-19. This could be the perfect time to revisit your favorite venues, all while doing your part to vote!

Safe Place Voting Areas

With November quickly approaching, Live Nation says they are committed to providing safe place voting areas for communities. Currently, four venues are confirmed in the initiative. These include the Wiltern and Hollywood Palladium in Los Angeles, Emo’s in Austin, and the Buckhead Theatre in Atlanta. It is expected that additional locations will be announced in the coming weeks.

This initiative is a great amount of work, especially with such a limited time frame. To assist in the process, Live Nation has partnered with a couple of organizations. Current partners include Civic Alliance, HeadCount, and More Than a Vote. In fact, More Than a Vote is led by basketball star LeBron James. The goal is to offer safe voting areas, regardless of one’s location. Fortunately, entertainment venues are often located in the heart of communities across the country..

Live Nation has also stated that employees will be offered paid time off to vote and work as poll workers as these locations. In the meantime, keep an eye out for additional confirmed voting locations in your area.

]]> Every year, the DJ Mag Top 100 list receives backlash full of accusations regarding artists using sketchy strategies to gain more votes. Most of the time, an influx of people who haven’t been heard of somehow find themselves in the top 20. And, who can forget all of the cringy campaigns that artists run to get their name on the list?

Although many DJ’s are entirely against the competition, this list still continues to have an influence on the EDM community. Recently, it has been revealed that the industry worldwide, particularly in Asia where the genre is up-and-coming, use the stats to determine how much to pay artists and which ones to book.

Sadly, the list is supposed to be a representation of fans’ true tastes and not just an industry boost. Thankfully, Reddit‘s popular electronic music subreddit, /r/EDM, has once again taken to the polls to rank their own top 100 DJs. With 1,176 votes, 755 unique DJs, 1,460 users, and 17,670 points given, the community has decided its own list of elite DJs. And while the reddit vote still isn’t the perfect replacement of DJ Mag’s list, it’s a whole lot more reliable.

Even though there are some similarities, such as Martin Garrix reigning his place at #1 on both lists, there are a number of noticeable differences. Rezz didn’t chart for DJ Mag, but managed to find herself in the top 10 on this list. Other DJs left off the DJ Mag Top 100 DJs list include RL Grime, Jauz, ZHU, 1788-L and JOYRYDE, who all find themselves on this Reddit-driven version. Porter Robinson‘s alter ego, Virtual Self, also makes the list at 13.

Initial Vote Passed by Legislation, Will Still Need Approval From Parliament to Become a Copyright Law

The Internet we all know and love may be coming to a censored end. Yesterday, the EU‘s legislative branch approved a proposed copyright law that, simply put, would screen all uploaded content to the Internet for copyright infringement. That’s right, ALL uploaded content. You can think of it in the context of how YouTube scans uploads for copyrighted material, but for the entire Internet. This would impact all different types of content, including texts, audio/video, images, and software.

Article 13 of the polarizing law, which can be read in it’s entirety here, focuses on this upload filter. Article 11 focuses primarily on what would forever be known as a “link tax.” This is a stipulation that would require online services to pay news publications for using their content. In simple terms, companies like Facebook or Google would be forced to purchase licenses from media companies before linking to their websites.

The Repercussions of Article 13

The passing of Article 13 alone would be highly destructive. In essence, it would require the creation of an automatic filter for all online content uploaded in the EU and beyond. The system would cost taxpayers lots of money, be impossible to keep updated, and would open itself to lots of copycats and those looking to mock or bring the system down. In many ways, it would mean anything uploaded would need to be approved by lawyers before reaching the public.

While there is no definitive timetable for Parliament’s vote on the law, people believe it will happen by the end of this year or early 2019. One of those firmly against the directive is Green MEP Julia Reda. She had this to say: “The methods to address the issue are catastrophic and will hurt the people they want to protect. It’s a sad day for the internet… but the fight is not over yet.” Many experts have warned that this will turn the Internet into a “tool for the automated surveillance and control of its users.”

A major backlash is brewing as more information is made clear to the public. The volume of calls, e-mails and texts from those against the law is having a large effect on the legislation. The majority of Parliament previously in favor are likely now thinking twice.

DJ Mag, known for its controversial ‘Top 100 DJs’ poll, is holding a new competition for its North American readers. For those of you who love complaining about the publication’s main poll, here is your chance to make your voice heard.

In the past, country music seemed to have an awards show every single weekend, now EDM clearly wants to get in on the action. Introducing the 2014 Beatport Awards from the world’s largest music store for DJs. Voting is now open through Feb. 28 for all Community Choice categories which include: Track of the Year, Artist of the Year, Label of the Year and Album of the Year. Users can cast one vote a day here and the results from these categories will broadcast popular opinion.

Beatport will also announce the winners for the following categories: Best-Selling Original Track of the Year, Best-Selling Remix of the Year, Best-Selling Album of the Year, Best-Selling Compilation of the Year, and DJ Choice Award (the track appearing on the most DJ charts) based on sales activity, which is a very credible way of deciding who should take home each prize. For five special categories, a panel of Beatport staff writers and dance music veterans will choose the receipient for: Track of the Year, DJ of the Year, Best Musical Collaboration, Best New Artist, and Lifetime Achievement.
