Before Tony McGuinness was Tony McGuinness of Above & Beyond, he was another artist, another music industry professional, another man entirely. But that was a long, long time ago — nearly 30 years ago, for that matter. And you’d better believe the Tony who preceded ‘Blue Monday‘, ‘Sun & Moon‘, ‘Alone Tonight‘, a cute ’04 BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix, and even a Marketing Director for Warner Music Group, was already too far down the rabbit hole of music to even consider leaving that sensitive side of him behind.

In fact, our beloved Tony has been actively making music since the late ’80s, as a guitarist for the iconic British Indie-Rock band, Sad Lovers And Giants. And you’re going to tell me there wasn’t any solo project of him lying around? Well, there was, but it was living leap year after leap year in the dungeons of the unreleased stuff. And there it was, private and personal.

Salt

Back in the mid-90s, Tony met a special someone, who goes by the name Shelley. The two had a rather short-lived story in terms of time, but, according to McGuinness himself, it was a very intense, very fulfilling journey. By chance — as all good things seem to occur — a weekend in a luxury hotel put him in the same place as her, an American, member of a band’s entourage.

“I walked in and there was this skinny, grumpy-looking girl smoking a fag”, he recalls, “wearing a thin cotton dress, cardigan, black tights, Dr Martens. I said: “Do you want a game of snooker?” She was like: “Yeah, alright.” So we started playing snooker – and started a relationship over the three days that I was there. I really fell for her. When she smiled, she looked incredibly beautiful. When she didn’t, she looked like she might kill you! She had one of those faces and I was utterly smitten”.

Instead of returning to America, Shelley’s flight took her to London, alongside Tony.

Keeping it short-attention-span friendly — to my heart’s most utter discontent, for I love backstories —, the result of this gunpowder-like romance was Salt, a nine-track LP born in a six-month period, back in those times when not even Google was around. Shelley was Tony’s muse, and these creations simply poured from him. Once she inevitably left England to return to the U.S., this piece sat there, rather unfinished, in an old sampler.

The 2000s came, with it came Above & Beyond, and life would never be the same again for T. A busy lifestyle turned the potential album into a lost memory of some sort. Until a few years ago, when he decided to unearth a piece of his very history and, potentially, his very first chapter as a heartfelt composer.

And the complete album will see the light of day in just about a week.

‘Biker Babe’ / ‘Babydoll White’

Two of the nine singles have been lifted ahead of the release, ‘Biker Babe‘ and ‘Babydoll White‘. The latter, mind you, you might remember from those Lockdown times of Tony Stan-Lee-ing over to Anjunadeep for a few Fingerprint tunes, some Deep sets, and some curated compilations under his belt.

And regarding the former, I’ll leave you with its creator: “[One morning, Shelley recited] the immortal words, which I will never forget: “Go and get your guitar and sing to me”. And as a creative person, for whom the spark of creativity is always elusive, to have that excuse to play, and to have that willingness to hear – well, I think that’s what a muse is, isn’t it? So I went and got my guitar. She had a Triumph motorcycle T shirt on. And I just went twang on my guitar and sang: “biker babe, biker babe…”. And that’s how that song came”.

A highly personal chapter of his career, Tony is finally unveiling Salt next Friday, July 12th. Do we even need an introduction here? Chances are, you either know Vikkstar, Masked Wolf, JME, or all of them. It’s always exciting to witness history in the making when artists from different backgrounds craft a piece together. Analysing how their sounds blend is often really interesting, even more so if the resulting song is a banger. Case in point, enter ‘Know Me Better‘.

DJ-producer hybrid and YouTube icon Vikkstar has taken Dance music by storm over the past months. After sitting in the studio with Alan Walker and Dash Berlin for their own take on the 90s classic by Alice Deejay, ‘Better Off (Alone, Pt. III)‘, which was a rousing success with over 60 million Spotify streams as we speak, the Sidemen member has stayed on the path of providing music for the whole world to enjoy.

This time, his new single welcomes an equally exciting project, Masked Wolf, the talented artist behind the world hit ‘Astronaut In The Ocean‘ from a few years ago. Not satisfied with their combo, ‘Know Me Better’ completes its battle team with the addition of legendary rapper and UK Grime trailblazer, JME. The single is now available to stream, courtesy of Monstercat Instinct.

‘Know Me Better’

Through clever elements, the track portrays a warm Deep House vibe, using synthesised trumpets, fat basslines, soft sine plucks, and the optimal amount of dirtiness on the percussion supporting the whole arrangement. As for the vocal bits, Masked Wolf walks you through the entire track with his iconic style. And just when you thought you had heard it all, boom, JME pops up and elevates the piece to new heights.

The lyrics of the single have a deeper underlying meaning as well, which has its roots in personal growth. As Wolf himself puts it, “There is always an element where people will judge you or get to know you and think they know you better than yourself. I wanted to express these ways of people not really caring for the other side of the story and just caring about their own. The whole verse depicts someone plotting against you, whether it is in love or friendship, to derail you. They think they can outsmart you because they believe they know you better than yourself, well they don’t“.

Regarding the creation of ‘Know Me Better’, Vikk reflects, “Since entering the music space, I have really enjoyed collaborating with old and new friends. Wolf and I regularly play Dota 2 together, from opposite sides of the planet. I have known Jamie for over a decade and always have a great time with him“.

“We all have different styles, and I feel that fusion worked really well on this track.”

German maestro Paul van Dyk has been at the forefront of the Electronic Dance Music scene for a long, long while now. When the so-called Proto-Trance turned into Trance by fusing with a style of production that stemmed from Eurodance but was not quite, Paul was there. When Trance took off in the golden era of the late 1990s, Paul was also there. And, actually, Mr van Dyk has been a part of the scene without a year we could tie him to. His music is timeless, and his releases have spelt brilliance time and time again, no matter the year.

On the other hand, Sue McLaren has turned into one of the most iconic voices of Trance music through the years. Working alongside industry shapers such as Andy Moor, Aly & Fila, 4 Strings, and Craig Connelly, she’s become one vocalist we’ve all heard and sung to.

So, what could happen, other than magic, if we combine the two artists together? Well, that’s part of the grace of ‘Love Is Enough‘, the latest conjoint effort of Paul van Dyk and Sue McLaren. Them joining forces is a proven successful formula by now. In fact, this is the tenth track they work on together, after classics like ‘We Come Together’, ‘Miracle’ with Giuseppe Ottaviani, and recently, ‘Guiding Light’ and ‘Beautiful Life’.

‘Love Is Enough’

As a part of celebrating the Silver Anniversary of van Dyk’s imprint VANDIT, his and Sue’s tenth track is one of many awe-inspiring tracks to come out on this, the 25th year of the life of the record label. Sue McLaren states, “Our musical journey together has been incredible, and I believe ‘Love Is Enough’ reflects the essence of our connection“. Paul agrees:

“Working with Sue is always a magical experience, and ‘Love Is Enough’ holds a special place in our hearts. We wanted to create something timeless, a tribute to the enduring power of love.”

The release contains three tracks, which are all spins on the same core idea: ‘Love Is Enough‘, which is a radio edit and basically a slightly toned-down version of the next track; the Shine Mix, a Trance-filled piece of Heaven, and the Venture X Mix, a techier, slightly deeper version of the song which is geared towards Paul’s very own VENTUREX touring concept.

As far as taste goes, I’ll pick the Shine Mix any day, for the euphoria of a properly produced Trance track cannot be beaten. But I definitely see the Venture X flip be much more versatile and fit a wider range of set styles and DJs.

Jokerz

Equally impressive is the career of Rawstyle duo Jokerz. Born in 2017, they’ve already acted as supporting acts for Da Tweekaz, Sub Zero Project, and Coone, among many others, plus they’ve headlined shows in several countries. Their latest public appearance, just like OutPhaze, was at SUPERKLUB, and boy, did they set up a show.

Taste It

Three minds are behind the making of this song. So, you’d expect triple the energy? You’re right. ‘Taste It’ is a single packed with enough energy to power a whole village. The use of sharp synths, screeches, and an entire arsenal of different kicks, all contribute to giving the festival personality from the get-go.

Crafted for the dancefloor, you’ll imagine where the CO2 cannons and the fire shows should go. The first round of kicks that come to play are Techno-infused, giving the low-end one heck of a starring role. After that, come the Rawstyle kicks, crafted to get your hands as high as they can go.

The break features yet another uplifting melody, as is the staple of Hardstyle. It couldn’t be complete without a catchy melody that you’ll probably learn by heart by the third replay of ‘Taste It’. Then the melodic drop hits, matching a variable kick play with the aforementioned progression. It’s truly a song to experience live.

The wait is over, at last! The hottest collaborators of the past months, we’re talking Calvin Harris and Ellie Goulding, have finally released their single ‘Miracle‘. ‘Miracle’ is the third collaboration of the two, a partnership that started way back in 2012. The three-part series started with ‘I Need Your Love‘, and then, two years later, in 2014, ‘Outside‘ was unveiled. It took a while for them to write something together once again, and today, having passed nearly 9 years since their last work, they’ve switched the BPMs up a notch, gone completely old school, and created this new song.

The ‘Miracle’

In case you haven’t been around for a while, or haven’t looked into this story as it happened, Harris and Goulding came together for a studio session mid-January, and they’d update on the upcoming song every now and then (read previous article entries for context). Finally, a couple of days ago, he premiered the song during his South America tour, where the first crowd to hear ‘Miracle’ in full was Lima, Peru. Chile and Argentina followed, and they all had the chance to listen to the song.

This song waits absolutely no time building up to Ellie’s angelical voice: it opens with it. And with a line so memorable we’ve been singing it since the second part of this news thread:

You’ll start to hear old-school ambient pads, and just when Ellie comes back onto the mic, nostalgia hits: kick, offbeat bass, and her voice. Nothing else. So 90s! Some Euro memories are bound to happen in this part of the song, but in case it doesn’t hit you, even after the roll of hi-hats, well, then there’s the piano melody! More 90s nostalgia for you! I personally jumped out of my chair when I heard it for the first time, with goosebumps and all. It’s a true trip down memory lane.

Is it Robert Miles? Is it Alice Deejay? No, it’s Calvin Harris, and it’s Ellie Goulding, and it’s a wave of sounds coming back to mainstages all over the world! Have a listen below.

Is Trance coming back, at long last?

After this song, and mainly who the artists behind it are, the question is put on the table yet again: could this year be the one in which Trance comes back to its glory days? With several artists bringing melodic bits to Techno and making the bridge between the two (i_o and Charlotte de Witte to name a few), and some others such as Hardwell and Maddix with their take on ‘Take Me Away‘ and Oliver Heldens reworking Kate Ryan‘s ‘Désenchantée‘, it seems like the genre is slowly but surely climbing its way back into the throne.

For now, all that remains is to compile recordings of these artists playing these songs and paying attention to the reaction of the crowd. And, of course, to enjoy ‘Miracle’ for months to come. Who would’ve thought Ellie’s voice sounded so good in that style of music!

Ordinarily, artists intentionally bury themes within each new project to help deliver a deeper message to the listener. So, with the release of this latest single, a clear concept begins to fully develop. Specifically, when you examine his website, the message behind the madness materializes. Namely, the subject of Jauz’s personal credo: “music has no boundaries” obviously ties everything together. No doubt, ‘Bring Em Back’ is a speaker-blowing sub-mersible- an ideal vehicle for venturing into dangerous waters and beyond. In short, it’s time to suit up and follow Jauz & Tynan deep into the bass music abyss.

If ‘Bring Em Back’ itself isn’t a sufficient affirmation of this, then its official video should provide resolute comprehension. On the other hand, it feels like you’re playing a fast-paced video game set to a bass house battle song. Furthermore, the melee, which includes sharks with lasers on their heads, is sure to confuse you. If not, the video’s weird and abrupt ending will absolutely leave you saying, “WTF?!”

The high quality work that Lee presents to the EDM world can be seen in music videos and promos for Years & Years, Halsey, and Kasabian. The former musician has also done commercial work with G-Star Raw, Adidas, and The British Council.

The track itself is a departure from Tchami’s typical future house sound and has elements of trendy tropical house that actually works. The downtempo shift leaves fans wondering if the rest of the highly anticipated ‘Revelations EP’ will exhibit a change in musical style. With the video for the live version of his original hit “Kuaga“, released on Cr2 Records last August, 22-year-old producer Pierce Fulton defies being pigeonholed into any one genre.  Although he now resides in Brooklyn, Pierce Fulton grew up jamming on the guitar at his home in Vermont.  As a 6-year-old, the young Fulton was taking requests from friends and family and covering classic rock tunes from the 1960’s and 1970’s.  After mastering the guitar, he moved onto learning the piano, drums and trombone.

Russian wunderkind Arty put his magic touch on OneRepublic’s anthem I Lived adding to the legacy of epic collaborations between electronic artists, OneRepublic and the band’s frontman, Ryan Tedder.  The official music video encapsulates all those carpe diem feelings the emotional tune inspires by intertwining black and white video of Arty and OneRepublic during their respective live performances.  At the drop, the video explodes into color footage, vividly illustrating the incredible lifestyle Arty and OneRepublic experience as highly successful musicians on the road.

The 25-year-old DJ/producer is on fire these days. Spinnin’ Records has just released the track and the official video for Martin Garrix and MOTi’s “Virus (How About Now).” The big room banger has been a mainstay of the 18-year-old Garrix’s festival sets and with good reason. It’s incredibly catchy (some might even say it’s contagious…) and the relentless bass and heart-pounding drop provide the perfect soundtrack to the sci-fi thriller story told in the video. A white-collar hero is tracked by ominous men in suits (who clearly took wardrobe cues from mentor Tiesto’s look on A Town Called Paradise album cover) before transferring the contagion to others. It turns out all the action is a real-life manifestation of a computer game; there’s even an “Error 404” Easter egg for Garrix fans.
