Google Assistant becomes more personable with Bard AI

Bard AI is becoming more personable with a message that says “Hi! I’m Bard”. 9to5Google even stated that the new personable message will also appear on other devices that have Google Assistant functionality already inputted in them. The configuration settings on Bard AI will be “Bard Settings” instead of “Assistant with Bard Settings”. The launching of the chatboot seems like Google is making the feature stand out from Google Assistant. Furthermore, this launching will enhance voice assistance technology to a higher level than it was before, especially when Apple first launched Siri.

How It Works

We’re all familiar with Shazam. It uses similar audio fingerprinting methods and tries to match the tempo and structure near perfect to obtain a result. But, you either need good data to figure out that song at someone’s festival set or you get a completely random suggestion from a different genre. So, it doesn’t always work. Google Assistant, though, uses deep neural networks so their song recognition is more advanced. This means that it can detect samples chopped or time-stretched, while also being under a second long.

“If the sample you are trying to find is part of a much longer drawn-out chord or texture, you can time-stretch or crossfade a loop to make the AI think it’s longer. You can also repitch the sample to form a chord progression if you guess it correctly.”

DJPasta

This technology is fairly new but scratches the surface of its potential: sample spotting. The tech will get more reliable over time, as advancements in AI continue. Tracklib reports that this new method “puts control into the hands of anyone looking for certain samples, as opposed to relying on a fingerprinting system fully controlled by a tech giant.” Plus, original owners can access multitracks, and not have to manually edit the audio to isolate any samples.

Will Shazam evolve, become extinct, or continue to be a game show? The notion of recognizing a sample under a second is almost inconceivable..almost. Read more on Tracklib’s blog regarding Google Assistant’s AI here.

Recently, Business Insider acquired an internal email from Google’s head of marketing, Lorraine Twohill. In the email, Twohill wrote that “This year, we’re going to take the year off from that tradition out of respect for all those fighting the Covid-19 pandemic.” In addition, she wrote that while major jokes planned have been cancelled but there may be smaller projects still going forward that they are unaware of.

“Our highest goal right now is to be helpful to people, so let’s save the jokes for next April, which will undoubtedly be a whole lot brighter than this one.”

Google has incorporated jokes and pranks in several online sites during previous April Fool’s Day traditions. For example, last year, users were able to play the classic game of Snake in Google Maps. Other gags included Space Invaders in Google Calendar and jokes from Google Assistant. In all, Google enjoyed the challenge of outdoing itself year after year, even if other companies never participated.

While a laugh may be helpful during our current situation, certain jokes and pranks will only bring unnecessary stress. Everyone around the world is impacted in some way by the COVID-19 virus. The last thing we need is more misread information spread through social media. Still, we will all get through this and have more to look forward to in the near future.

In the complaint, Sonos is accusing the tech giant of infringing multiple patents on its smart speaker technology. Apparently, Google gained access to it during a 2013 partnership with Sonos. The partnership was integrating Google Play Music into its products.

It was only 2 years later that Google introduced its own smart speakers under the Chromecast Audio line. Google then expanded its use of Sonos technology in many products. Many of these products are including Google Home, Google Home Mini, Google Home Max, Nest Mini, Nest Hub, Nest Hub Max, tablets and laptops among others.

Sonos CEO Makes a Statement to Billboard

In a statement to Billboard, Sonos CEO Patrick Spence shared his opinion regarding the subject:

“Google is an important partner with whom we have collaborated successfully for years, including bringing the Google Assistant to the Sonos platform last year. However, Google has been blatantly and knowingly copying our patented technology in creating its audio products. Despite our repeated & extensive efforts over the last few years, Google has not shown any willingness to work with us on a mutually beneficial solution. We’re left with no choice but to litigate in the interest of protecting our inventions, our customers, and the spirit of innovation that’s defined Sonos from the beginning.”

Only time will tell how this all plays out. However, Google isn’t the only company Sonos is after. In addition to suing, Sonos also accused amazon of similar accusations with its Echo devices.

Now with only your voice, you can pick from a wide variety of top rated stations. The stations offered include everything from commercial-free music to sports. While integration with voice to audio content is only offered currently, this feature will be added to video content on smart displays in the future. Initially limited in the U.S. and Canada, the integration is expected to go live next week.

Currently with over 30 million subscribers, SiriusXM president of sales, marketing and operations Jennifer Witz is excited about the partnership:

The Google Assistant and Google Nest’s portfolio of connected home devices, including the Google Home and Nest Hub, utilize intuitive voice recognition technology that make them a great way for subscribers to experience SiriusXM’s compelling and exclusive content in the home.

How To Tune into the Radio with New Feature

From the Google Blog, here are a few ways to tune into the radio with this new feature:

• Ask for your favorite station by its channel name or frequency—say something like, “Hey Google, play KGMZ” or “play 95.7.”
• Find the local NPR station by saying “Hey Google, play NPR” or even tune into international stations such as BBC Radio with the Assistant.
• The Assistant remembers your most recent station. Just say “Hey Google, turn on the radio” to drop back into the stream.
• When you’re in the car, you can access the Assistant from your driving directions in Google Maps. Just say “Hey Google …” and ask for your favorite station, so that you don’t have to take your eyes off the road.
• Your favorite radio station will automatically play when you add it to your “good morning” or “I’m home” Routine, which allows you to get multiple things done with a single command from the Assistant. They’re easy to set up.

The new and improved Pixel Buds take on a different design. After scanning “thousands of ears”, Google is optimizing the headphones for comfort, quality, and a low-profile look. The headphones come with a new feature called “Adaptive Sound”, which automatically adjusts the volume as you move from different environments. From the Google blog:

Many of us turn to our phones constantly. On average, people check their smartphones almost 100 times a day, and more than half of those interactions—playing a song, setting a reminder or getting directions—are less than 30 seconds. Google Pixel Buds can help make those quick tasks easier and faster, with instant access to the Google Assistant. Plus, they’re comfortable and secure in your ear, deliver high-quality sound, make clear calls, and have a long battery life.

Many Pixel fans are concerned over the camera related updates as Google takes pride in their top level photo-taking technology. Generally, it is Google’s software that makes Pixel photographs and video so crisp and clear, not the camera itself. The promo video briefly showed the phone’s ability to capture photos in the dark, along with crisp shots of the stars. The rear of the device did have a square camera bump, similar to rumors surrounding the soon to be announce iPhone 11.

Lastly, the leaked video advertised a new and improved Google Assistant. In the video, one was able to navigate and find specific photos on their device and even share them with friends, all with one’s voice. While some users refrain from using virtual assistants like Google Assistant and Siri, there’s no question that they are becoming smarter and more reliable for daily tasks.

The short video ends without any details of a release date or price, which seems odd. We expect to hear official news from Google on the device in fall, most likely around October. However, it may arrive sooner seeing that so many details have already leaked.

The feature already rolled out to Google’s flagship Pixel phones last month and is now gradually rolling out to U.S. Android devices with Google Assistant. Unfortunately, Google has yet to announce whether or not this feature will be supported outside the U.S., according to EDM Sauce.

In order to use this new feature, Android users simply need to open Assistant and ask, “What song is this?” or say “Okay Google. What song is this?” to automatically open Assistant and prompt for the song info. Google Now has enabled users to search for song info since 2015, but it seems as though Google Assistant is on its way to replace it. This feature follows Apple‘s collaboration with Shazam to bring song identification to Siri back in 2014.

This feature isn’t the only useful new feature Google has recently launched, as its new Pixel Buds can now translate languages in real-time using Google Translate. Will you be using this new Google Assistant feature? Sound off in the comments!
