We can easily recall the day we first listened to Jason Ross‘ debut album, 1000 Faces. It feels like it was just a few weeks ago. The impact it made for his career, Seven Lions’ Ophelia Records, and the electronic industry was magnificent. He has built his brand from nooks of Minneapolis to now all over the world. In fact, even at festivals Jason is not performing at, his merchandise can be seen scattered throughout the crowds (shoutout to the group with the flag at Heatwave Music Festival in Chicago!) He’s come an exceptionally long way since bursting into the scene in 2014 along with Anjunabeats and Above & Beyond. And now, he has released his second full album, Atlas.

The word “atlas” is no stranger to Jason’s world. Back in 2015, with the help of Wrechiski, he released “Atlas” on Anjuna. It was immediately played on the stages of ABGT and by all other colleagues near and far. His fan base is even named The Atlas along with his radio show. Clearly, the word means a lot to him.

It was then in 2017 that he joined forces with Jeff Montalvo (Seven Lions) at the Gorge for Group Therapy 250 and the rest is history. Fast forward a couple of years, a pandemic, a few outstanding collaborations, EPs, and singles, we are graced with a brand new, 10 track, album.

Breakdown

There’s a lot to unpack with this amazing piece. Firstly, there are some very friendly names on a few of the tracks. MitiS and Jason worked magnificently together on “Take You Home” with Dia Frampton’s phenomenal voice (she contributes to another track, “Stay” as well). The single already has a half a million plays on Spotify! Also, “Hate This Kind of Love” with HOLT really is a major hit. Specifically, it hits home lyrically:

So tired of these emotions
Keepin’ me up at night
Just wish you could come over
But I know that I’m the reason
To why you hurt so much
So I guess it’s only fair that
I miss the ordinary things
The feelin’ of your skin
The way you held me
The scar on your shoulder
I’m really good at buildin’ walls

Additionally, a woman who is no stranger to all music lovers, RUNN lends her notable voice to ‘More than Life’. Anything she touches is beautiful. It flows naturally from her sultry lyrics in the verses to an upbeat toe-tapping chorus. Keeping the girl power flowing on the album is Haliene. She completely belts out, like usual, “Burning Sky” which gets the energy going. This one will easily be played in Jason and Haliene’s sets.

Finally, other notable tracks are “Too Young for Forever” and “Ghost Town”! “Ghost Town” gives Jonathan Mendelsohn vibes with his smooth voice that goes perfectly with the melodic dubstep breakdown.

Trance heavy hitters Above & Beyond, Alpha 9, John O’ Callaghan, Giuseppe Ottaviani, Spencer Brown, and more will be there. Melodic bass god Seven Lions is also coming. We hope the extra racetrack stage is there because that provided a great place for trance and foot traffic.

We truly look forward to the festival season starting off on the right foot this year. Walking through Cheshire Woods, the Checkered Lane, and finding all the delectable themed drinks is an experience that attendees get lost in. Mushroom and rabbit art installations tower over you while performers roam the grounds and excite you. Grab your crew or your festie bestie and have the time of your life. The year is only beginning and there is so much more to happen. Look forward to endless tea parties, colorful cheers, peculiar critters, and enchanting moments in this new year. Plus, there may even be some surprises.

Covid-19 has all but halted the live music scene, and with it, live shows. While most artists have been busy playing live streams to their legions of fans, one artist in particular, has been rather quiet. That artist in question is none other than the legendary Armin van Buuren.

If you look at his pre-COVID schedule, it is easy to see why. The man is a machine. If you want proof of this, look no further than his hectic Balance tour. While he hasn’t been streaming, he’s been anything but idle. Since quarantine, he’s managed to release numerous singles and surprise collaborations. Now, we can add a compilation mix, to this list of releases. I say this, as he’s just dropped his ASOT 2020 compilation mix.

The mix features loads of new music from Armada veterans and newcomers alike. On ASOT 2020, we have names like Fatum, OTIOT, Protoculture, and Rodg, in addition to the man AVB himself. The mix itself is over four hours, clocking in at exactly 4 hr 56 min. If you were looking for a way to spend a music-filled afternoon, this is it.

Last weekend, one of the biggest trance events took over Mexico City. A State of Trance celebrated yet another edition with some of the biggest names in the trance industry. ASOT Mexico, curated by Dutch DJ/Producer Armin Van Buuren, brought in over 25,000 people to enjoy the purest melodies, strongest beats, and a sense of unification and happiness in what turned out to be one of the best events in Mexico this year.

Trance Takes Over Mexico

It all began last Saturday, when over 25,000 fans and 15 of the best Trance DJs took over Parque Bicentenario to dance and party for 8 hours. ASOT announced just a couple days before the festival that the festival was officially sold out. ASOT 900 contained 2 stages, the main stage and the ‘Road to 1000’ stage. A lineup full of some of the biggest names in trance such as Cosmic Gate, Ferry Corsten, John Askew, and of course, Armin Van Buuren ignited the crowd and gave them one of the most memorable nights the EDM scene in Mexico has ever had.

ASOT Begins

Since the beginning of the festival, big names such as Spencer Brown took the crowd into the full ASOT mood. Bringing in classics and brand new amazing tracks, including his brand new Deadmau5 remix, Spencer Brown helped get the public in the mood. Artists such as Mexican DJ/Producer Leo Reyes, American duo Elevven, and Ruben De Ronde would continue to help immerse the crowd as the sun came down, covering the festival with a golden aura and announcing the coming of a perfect night.

ASOT by Night

After a couple hours, the sun came down, and the night took over Parque Bicentenario. Legendary German duo Cosmic Gate took over the main stage to drop anthem after anthem. They would be joined by Luke Bond, Ashley Wallbridge, and legend Ferry Corsten, who introduced his project System F to Mexico City. Ben Gold took the stage as well. Armed with his new album Sound Advice: Chapter 2 the 26 years old completely owned the night.

The Boss Comes Up

Finally, at 10 pm, the man, the legend, and the ASOT founder made his stellar appearance. Armin Van Buuren took over the mainstage, surrounded by screams and ovations. He then proceeded to completely control the night, showing why he is considered one of the best, if not the best DJ of all time. ‘Revolution’, ‘Blah Blah Blah’, and ‘Great Spirit’ were just some of the tracks played in one of the best trance sets Van Buuren has delivered in Mexico City. After two hours filled with the purest essence of trance, Van Buuren surprised the crowd by dropping a hardstyle remix for ‘Blah Blah Blah’ and announcing he would be back in Mexico soon. Could we have our first EDC Mexico Headliner?

The End

Even after Van Buuren’s set was over, there was still a lot of dancing at partying at ASOT 900. Marlo, Obie Fernandez & Lightform, and John Askew delivered amazing sets that kept the people moving, singing and dancing even after many of them looked tired and ready to go home.

Finally, the closing acts came up to the stage. The main stage was closed by Israeli DJ/Producer Whiteno1se, who delivered a set filled with all-time greats psy-trance mashups and a live performance by Scottish singer Nina Nesbitt. Meanwhile, on the Road to 1000 stage, Scottish DJ/Producer Will Atkinson dropped one of his famous “no genre” sets. With these performances, ASOT 900, Mexico City would come to an end. The crowd left the place smiling, singing and going over the memories of a crazy, beautiful, and amazing night.

What We Learned

Undoubtedly, ASOT 900 left a mark in Mexico’s EDM industry. In a scene dominated by bass and house, trance was long due for a comeback. After Psy-trance took over the EDM industry, thousands were finally waiting for the definite trance comeback. Now, the comeback might finally be on sight.

A sold-out event, anywhere, at any time is always something to respect, and ASOT 900 being a sold-out event sends out a pretty clear message: Trance is back. Not only Psy-trance, but the most melodic genre in the whole EDM specter. Without a doubt, we will now be seeing the return of one of the biggest, oldest, and most important genres in the EDM industry.

Ruben has been a mainstay in the trance industry for quite some time, but this album may yet be his most impressive accomplishment. Different has been in the making for about two years. Nevertheless, the album is well worth the wait.

Different features some highly anticipated tracks such as ‘Trinity’ with FUTURECODE. Additionally, ‘Lucky Penny’ with Elevven and ‘Games’ with Louise Rademakers are tracks you cannot miss. The idea behind this album is to let it be known that it’s okay to be Different. The unique collaboration throughout this album demonstrates this idea perfectly.  

Ruben de Ronde is a shining light in the music industry. One can’t help but admire the desire he has to involve his fans in Different. Such a bold move has its risks, but after listening to the album you’ll see it’s a risk well worth taking. The DJ, producer and Statement! Recordings label owner kicks off summer with what could be the best trance album of 2019.
