As the people of Tomorrow are set to gather at the holy grounds for weekend one of Tomorrowland, Belgian officials have announced a ban on fireworks. Mayors Jeroen Baert of Boom and Jurgen Callaerts of Rumst, together with Provincial Governor Cathy Berx with Provincial Governor Cathy Berx on the advice of the fire department, following a period of extremely high temperatures that have left the area at high risk of wildfires. The region is currently under Code Orange, the second-highest fire risk level in Belgium, which advises against activities that could increase the risk of fires in natural areas.

While the news does put a damper on the event, Tomorrowland is no stranger to adversity, and the festival is prepared to provide attendees with an unforgettable experience even without traditional fireworks. However, due to local laws, a drone show is also not in the cards. “We are going to provide extra show elements, such as confetti, smoke bombs, and sparklers”, says spokeswoman Debby Wilmsen. She added, “The focus currently seems to be very much on the fireworks, while that is merely a concluding element of a show. Our planned light shows will also go ahead. It is going to be worth it regardless”.

“The ban applies until Tuesday for now,” says Wilmsen. “We assume that we will be allowed to use stage fireworks next weekend.” While the weather in Belgium calls for a slight chance of rain next week, hopes remain that weekend 2 will experience a full fireworks display alongside the headlining acts.
