Nicky Romero Releases the 1st Video of From His 3-Part “Redefine” Documentary

Nicky Romero Drops First Video Of His ‘Define’ Documentary

Over the years, dance music has become one of our world driving forces, and we’re absolutely loving it. The reason that it has become a force to be reckoned with is thanks to long-standing artist like Tiësto, Armin van Buuren, David Guetta. Throughout the last decade, we’ve seen the rise of other artists such as Avicii, Hardwell, and Nicky Romero.

Over the years, many of these same artists have documented and shared their ascents to fame & stardom, giving us all an insight into their real lives. Today, we bring you the newest documentary by the way of Nicky Romero‘s new 3-Part ‘Redefine‘ documentary. The first part of three, the first installment is titled “Past“.

Past” gives us all an insight into the early days of Nicky Romero’s career as DJ, and later, a producer. Over the course of the video, he talks about working backstage handing water to bigger DJs, as well as attending smaller festivals, where he got much inspiration from.

In addition to all of this, the Protocol Recordings label head dives deep into the technical aspects of music production. This is something I’m sure aspiring producers everywhere will appreciate. He touches on his remix of Green Velvet‘s track ‘Flash, which I’m positive you’ve heard at a festival at some point in time.

Music Production

Nicky talks about Synplant, which is a virtual synthesizer he used on all of his tracks. Romero then goes on to talk about signature sounds, and how his drums became his, with his peers even asking for his original drum samples. This is all likely due to the fact that Romero has a background as marching band drummer.

He continues on and speaks about the necessity of sidechaining, and how he stumbled upon the technique. For those of you who don’t produce, sidechaining is a technique in which one audio source ducks when triggered by another source. This is most notably used with basses, and kick drums.

Romero has even gone so far as to produce his own third-party plugins. He has done this together with Cableguys and Sonic Academy, with plugins like ‘Kickstart’ and Kick’, respectively. To end the first entry in his ‘Redefine’ series, Romero had this to say:

“As you gain experience, it’s not about the technical side, the technical side needs to be automatic…As you evolve and gain experience, you learn it’s all about the crowd – and that’s what matters.”

With the first installment of ‘Redefine’ already out, be sure to give it a watch. Even if you’re not big on the production side of things, it is awesome to see an artist speak so passionately about his work. While there is no release date for the next installment titled ‘Present‘ we are already looking forward to watching. Be sure to check out the full video below.
