What So Not – Gemini Ft. George Maple (Ekali Remix)
It’s been four days since What So Not’s “Gemini” Ft. George Maple percolated to the heights of Hypem’s indie blog index and racked up more than 600,000 listens. In a notable attempt to ride this momentum, Ekali released his remix of the track the following day. His version successfully rethinks the original in surprising ways, relying on the original more for direction than its popular substance.
The Vancouver-based producer deconstructs and rebuilds What So Not’s track, and manages to create his own mood with the material. Masterfully sampled and well composed, Ekali’s version surrounds both the moody keyboards with breaths and atmosphere; and complements the more energetic ones with his manically paced drum kit. He never relies on the original’s climaxes to make his own song, but rather carves out his own vision. In this vein, he approaches the original’s vocals only for melody — never for lyrics.
