What a year it’s been for Above & Beyond fans. After receiving the news of a new album, the release of its first single (praised worldwide and thought of as the trio’s true comeback after Lockdown), a Coachella performance in which Tony, Jono and Paavo performed together much like their yearly ABGTs (the only time they do so in the year), now we get a new single lifted from Bigger Than All Of Us, their upcoming LP.

And following the footsteps of ‘Quicksand (Don’t Go)’, the previously released piece, this one is also written and sung by one of the most iconic voices in Trance, Zoë Johnston, a vocalist who’s also lent her magical voice to projects from the likes of Faithless and Bent. Out today via Anjunabeats, ‘Carry Me Home‘ is a beautifully composed piece, which melts the heartstrings both instrumentally and lyrically.

You really can’t go wrong with the A&BxZJ pairing. It’s proven to be among their most successful partnerships in all of the band’s 25 years of history, with worldwide hits — and defining A&B anthems — such as ‘Good For Me’ from their debut album Tri-State, ‘We’re All We Need’, the lead single from their 2015 album fittingly named We Are All We Need, and even their first-ever work together, ‘No One On Earth’, from 2004.

If ‘Quicksand’ tells the heartbreaking story of having to accept the inevitable loss of a loved one in their last moments, ‘Carry Me Home’ uplifts your spirit, singing the tale of that person who comes to your life to put the colours in the canvas you’ve drawn out of your experiences. The track talks about that special someone who, as the lyrics say, lifts you up.

And the bed the words lie down in this time is also very uplifting to all of us who look back at the 80s as a period of golden music and joyful nostalgia: ‘Carry Me Home’ follows the path Above & Beyond took when writing their 2021 single with Justine Suissa, ‘Almost Home’. With an approach that is perhaps less “Big-Roomey” than other productions of theirs, this track centres itself around a very catchy vocal hook to get you singing, and its instruments portray a very eighties-inspired layout, with a large snare, eighth notes for a bass pattern, warm analogue elements, and acoustic guitar fills. It’s a lovely blend of everything we love: the emotion-packed nature of the Trance trio, and the sounds of, perhaps, the greatest decade of music. Come fight me.

Led by prominent figureheads like John 00 Fleming, KI/KI, Basil O’Glue, Maruwa, and Blue Hour, Trance (Raw/Deep/Hypnotic) celebrates the diverse Trance underground and its many distinguished labels. By separating Underground and Main Floor Trance, Beatport allows both styles of Trance to flourish in their respective spaces. Moreover, it will offer a better customer experience to those searching for Trance subgenres.

“It was only a matter of time before Trance gained another genre page on Beatport to focus on the underground side,” said DJ and producer John 00 Fleming. “With the introduction of this dedicated world, Trance can now flourish and breathe”. Featuring the angelic yet powerful vocals of singer-songwriter Tricia McTeague, ‘Only A Heartbeat Away’ is guaranteed to “raise the bar for all uplifting tracks” with its heart-pounding beat and massive drops. With such synergy between the tune and vocals, it’s easy to tell that Giuseppe Ottaviani and Tricia McTeague must have collaborated in the past. Indeed, the two have created ‘Loneliest Nights,’ another vocal trance banger released back in 2016.

Recent Updates

Needless to say, coronavirus-related disruptions have been anything but ideal. Dreamstate Poland, for which Giuseppe had written the anthem ‘Morpheus,’ has been postponed and many more shows cancelled. Yet, the trance visionary has continued creating magic for fans live from his studio. Like many others, he has dabbled into live-streaming Lockdown Sessions which he’s named ‘Vinyl Sets,’ which has already captured the hearts of the global trance family with two parts.

According to the trance legend himself, ‘You’ll Be OK’ “may well be the best f***ing trance song [he has] ever written”. The heartfelt vocals feature British singer-songwriter Annabel, who beautifully delivers the light that we all need under current circumstances.

For Gareth Emery himself, the track not only embodies “some tough times in [his] life”, but also represents his first milestone as a newly independent artist. As a result, fans will almost certainly forgive him for holding the track back for ten months since its debut, and for perfecting it to the way it currently is.

Well, Gareth Emery has done it again. His first release of 2020, ‘Yesterday’ once again proves Gareth’s mastery in vocal trance, among many other sub-genres. Created alongside British talent NASH, the latest single features the enchanting vocals of American singer-songwriter Linney, who perfectly interprets the themes of hope and optimism embedded in the melody.

“I was so stoked to work with Linney and NASH as I’ve loved both of their work for ages. Super happy with the way this song turned out! We debuted this at Laserface in Minneapolis and it was a proper moment.”

‘Yesterday’ premiered last October during Gareth’s Laserface show at The Armory in Minneapolis, and immediately became a crowd hit. The track begins with a soothing piano tune, which is then supplemented by Linney’s beautiful interpretation of the inspiring lyrics. Ultimately, these components lead to an energetic melodic lift-off as the last trance elements come together to complete the track.

Following an electric comeback performance at the ASOT Stage of Ultra Miami, it’s safe to say that Jeffrey Sutorius is officially back. Promising tons of new music, he follows through on that promise today. We are delighted for his latest track ‘Nothing Hurts Like Love‘ featuring the talented Jonathan Mendelsohn. The release comes to us via his own imprint BODYWRMR.

This track is his second release since splitting from Dash Berlin. His first solo release was his track ‘Bad Days.’ He has taken on a lighter, poppier, and uplifting direction than his previous work. Via his record label social media account, they have been publicizing this release heavily:

‘Nothing Hurts Like Love’ opens with a strong kick drum leading into some inspired piano work. As you are lulled by this instrumental verse, Jonathan Mendelsohn’s voice chimes in every so gently. His high-soaring vocals carry the listener into a flourish of supremely uplifting effect work. As the song builds, Mendelsohn’s voice releases into a very affirming crescendo of big bass work and high-cutting synths. A quick turnaround cut with some acoustic guitar comes back strong again into the song’s final release. A truly enjoyable track from Jeff!

With a run of commanding vocal trance hits, ‘Whisper’ not only adds to his catalog but may just be MaRlo’s best to date. With a storming intro, the listener feels ready for another banger. The softness and purity of HALIENE’s voice kick in, and you quickly realize this is no ordinary track. As the thumping bass and HALIENE’s voice give way, a beautiful classical piano riff takes over. Mixing expertly with HALIENE’s voice and some meaningful lyrics, the piano gives way to anthem-inducing synth work. With a string of massive hits like ‘Concrete Angel,’ ‘U,’ ‘Reckless,’ and ‘Call To Arms,’ it can be easy to be skeptical. His Laserface show is taking off, and he recently announced a tour of OpenXClose sets. People may ask: “How can one person put out so many massive hits?” Gareth’s answer it quite simple – with a lot of hard f***ing work.

In today’s day and age, it’s so easy to judge and crap on those who create. We take a stance of “guilty until proven innocent”, and place artists under high scrutiny for every move they make. While Emery states that he has used people to help polish up tracks (everyone has), he insists that his music production is all him. He doesn’t agree with DJs who “buy ready made tracks off the shelf,” but understands this goes down.

It sounds like he is tired of getting accused of something he isn’t, which is fair. We have to remember that any form of artistry is about passion and sharing creations with others. We should keep trying to find and spread the joy, not bring people down due to an “elitist” attitude.

THE GHOST PRODUCTION LOWDOWN (LONG). . I frequently get asked if I produce my own music. . This is a way more complex topic than people generally realize but here’s the lowdown. . Firstly, I don’t have anything against using engineers to polish up a track (even though I rarely do it myself). . I mean, if an artist has written the melodies, the song, it’s no big deal having someone else work on the production. Did The Beatles produce their own music? Of course not. . Now that’s very different to artists who can’t play a single note of music and simply buy ready-made tracks off the shelf…. which is basically taking someone else’s art and passing it off as your own. . Me? On most of my good tracks I did *all* the production. . Not because I’m against getting help, but because nobody else could do it how I wanted. I did all of: . Concrete Angel. Sanctuary. Reckless. Mistral. Sansa. U. Tokyo. Long Way Home. Exposure. Metropolis. .
But I’ve done some tracks, mostly remixes, where I was running out of time and someone else to do the heavy lifting to finish my demos. Alex Sonata worked on my remix of Lost Frequencies. Craig Connelly on my remix of Ferry Corsten. . In those cases I wrote the music. They’re still Emery tracks. They’re just tracks I wouldn’t have got finished otherwise. . On the flip side, there are about 10 tracks in the Armada / Garuda catalog that I ghost produced for others back in the day. . In all honesty I’d fucking love to find a permanent engineer to finish up my tracks. . It would allow me to focus entirely on writing music and songs, rather than spending 4 hours tuning a hi-hat that nobody notices anyway, and I’d likely release more music as a result. . But nobody else really nails it so for now, it’s me. . Side-note: my fav person to collab with is @ashwallbridge . We think about music in absolutely the same way, and can both do every bit of the process. On balance, he’s the better engineer, and I’m probably a bit better at melodies, but together we’re a lethal fucking team. Except to see a shit load more records from us soon. 👊🏻 .
