American audio equipment and software manufacturer, Sonos has been embroiled in a consumer revolt since it released a new app May 7th. This new app had been hyped in the press and was going to make product setup easier and greatly improve the user experience. However, when the app was actually released, it was, and somewhat remains, a disaster. Since the new app was released, CEO Patrick Spence has issued a formal apology and announced in August that the company would be delaying the launch of two products “until our app experience meets the level of quality that we, our customers, and our partners expect from Sonos”.

But one thing is for sure: if you want the old Sonos app back, it’s not coming. In a Reddit AMA response posted Tuesday, Sonos CEO Spence says that he was hopeful “until very recently” that the company could rerelease the app — But after extensive testing, rereleasing the old app would allegedly make things worse. “The trick of course is that Sonos is not just the mobile app, but software that runs on your speakers and in the cloud too. In the months since the new mobile app launched we’ve been updating the software that runs on our speakers and in the cloud to the point where today S2 is less reliable & less stable than what you remember“, he said.

“After doing extensive testing we’ve reluctantly concluded that re-releasing S2 would make the problems worse, not better. I’m sure this is disappointing. It was disappointing to me.”

— Patrick Spence via Reddit

Although the old app is dead in the water, Spence assured folks that fixing the current app “remains my #1 priority“.

Back in May, American audio equipment manufacturer Sonos updated its app and it received a lot of criticism from its long-time customers. According to an article from Digital Music News, the update removed many features that have appeared on the app for several years. Some of the features the app removed include the “shuffle all” from the combined library, no more volume numbers, timers and alarms, and lack of EQ control. The unpopularity of the update later influenced Sonos CEO Patrick Spence to apologize and, a few days ago, the company confirmed layoffs affecting about 100 employees.

The Reason Behind Sonos’ Layoffs

The layoffs from Sonos also come while the company continues fixing the effects of the updates that arrived back in May. According to a post from The HR Digest, the multiple bugs, missing features, accessibility issues, and other malfunctions that came from the app’s update disrupted the general workflow of the various departments in the company. On the day of the Sonos layoffs, the 100 employees instantly lost access to their work. This meant that those employees were unaware until later that they were on the layoff list and got the sack by Sonos immediately. The latest layoffs from Sonos are not the first time the company has overseen a situation like this. In 2020, during the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, it had to let go of 12% of its workforce and then in 2023, it laid off 7% more.

So far, the manufacturer has not laid out a plan that can get the app back going efficiently. The layoffs even prompted Sonos to halt two product launches so that the company could allow the developers more time to fix the app. There are also rumors that the app may return to its old version that many customers liked. CEO Patrick Spence then emphasized a goal towards improving the app to much more qualitative standards. The CEO said, “Continued commitment to the app recovery and delighting our customers remains our priority, and we are confident that today’s actions will not impact our ability to deliver on that promise”.

In a surprising move, Google has wasted no time in restoring some of the features and functionality it previously removed from multiple products, following its recent victory in a federal court. This decision comes in response to Sonos’ patent infringement case, which had caused a legal battle between the two companies. While Sonos plans to appeal the ruling, Google seems confident that the decision won’t be reversed anytime soon. However, this prolonged legal battle has undoubtedly impacted the customers the most. Although the restoration of grouping features is a positive step, it’s worth noting that Google Assistant still remains absent from Sonos’ latest smart speakers. On Tuesday, Google took the opportunity to call for patent reform, accusing Sonos of wasting time and resources with this case.

While the legal proceedings between Sonos and Google may seem like a distant conflict between two corporate giants, the impact extends far beyond the boardrooms and courtrooms. It affects the everyday users and customers who rely on these products and services for their entertainment and convenience. Let’s delve deeper into the details and implications of this ongoing battle.

The Battle Between Sonos and Google

The battle between Sonos and Google has been a long and arduous one, with both companies accusing each other of patent infringement. Sonos, a leading manufacturer of smart speakers and audio products, initially filed a lawsuit against Google in January 2020. The lawsuit alleged that Google had infringed on multiple patents related to wireless audio technology, including the ability to synchronize speakers and adjust volume across multiple rooms.

However, Google fired back with its own countersuit, claiming that Sonos had also infringed on its patents related to wireless audio systems. The legal battle intensified as both companies sought to protect their intellectual property and gain a competitive edge in the ever-growing smart speaker market.

After a year and a half of legal proceedings, the case finally reached a verdict in favor of Google. Judge William Alsup ruled in Google’s favor, throwing out an initial $32.5 million verdict against the tech giant. This victory for Google has allowed the company to move quickly in restoring some of the features and functionality it had previously removed from its products.

The Impact on Customers

Unfortunately, legal battles like the one between Sonos and Google often have a significant impact on customers. Throughout the proceedings, customers of both companies have been left without certain features and functionality, resulting in a diminished user experience. This disruption is particularly pronounced for owners of Sonos products, as Google Assistant remains absent from Sonos’ latest smart speakers.

While the restoration of grouping features is a step in the right direction, it is important to acknowledge the frustration and inconvenience experienced by customers. The inability to use certain features as a result of a legal dispute can lead to dissatisfaction and a loss of trust in the companies involved. As customers invest in these products with certain expectations, any hindrances that arise due to legal battles can significantly erode the value proposition.

Google’s Call for Patent Reform

In light of the patent infringement case brought against it by Sonos, Google has called for patent reform. The tech giant has accused Sonos of “wasting time and resources” through the legal proceedings. While Google’s stance is understandable, it is important to recognize the value and significance of intellectual property rights.

Patent reform is a complex issue that requires careful consideration. While there may be instances where patent disputes can hinder innovation and progress, it is essential to strike a balance between protecting intellectual property and fostering competition. Google’s call for patent reform highlights the need for a comprehensive and fair framework that encourages innovation while preventing abuse of patent rights.

While legal battles can be frustrating for customers, it is important to recognize that they are an inevitable part of the tech industry. As technology continues to advance, it is crucial for companies to approach disputes with a focus on finding mutually beneficial resolutions. By doing so, they can ensure that customers are not unduly affected and that innovation can thrive in the face of legal challenges.

A jury has ordered Google to pay Sonos $32.5 million in damages for infringing one of its smart speaker patents. The verdict marks a significant development in a long-standing legal battle between the two tech companies that has spanned more than three years and multiple lawsuits.

Details of the Case

The case was filed in a San Francisco court in 2019 by Sonos, which alleged that Google had infringed on its patents for smart speakers. Sonos claimed that Google had used its patented technology in its Google Home and Chromecast products without permission. The technology in question allows smart speakers to synchronize and play music across different rooms and audio devices.

The jury verdict awarded Sonos $2.30 for each of the more than 14 million Google devices that were sold incorporating the patented technology. The jury found that Google had not infringed a second patent at issue in the case.

The verdict is a significant win for Sonos, which has been locked in a legal battle with Google since 2018. Sonos had accused Google of copying its technology and undercutting its prices, leading to a decline in Sonos’ market share. The jury’s decision to award damages to Sonos could help the company regain some of its market share and strengthen its position in the smart speaker market.

The verdict could also have wider implications for the tech industry, as it highlights the importance of intellectual property and patents in the highly competitive world of technology. As companies continue to develop innovative products and technologies, legal battles over patents and intellectual property are likely to become increasingly common.

The verdict in the Sonos vs. Google case is a significant development in a long-standing legal battle between the two companies. The outcome of the case could have far-reaching implications for the tech industry, as it highlights the importance of intellectual property and patents in the highly competitive world of technology.

Sonos is about to drop the next speaker you have to have. Their new ‘Optimo 2’ model will be able to play music in almost all directions. It is preparing to be their flagship product and most likely their best–sounding one ever. For a company as established as Sonos, this is pretty huge.

The Optimo 2 will be encased in a “funky, dual-angled shell,” with an array of drivers that project the music in different directions. Your next party is about to be lit. Imagine just putting it in the middle and having the same volume everywhere. Optimo 2 will include twice as much RAM and around eight times more flash memory than any previous Sonos speaker.

The new speaker will also be able to support Sonos Voice Control. This will be the lead product of a whole new line including Optimo 1 and an Optimo SL, which will not include built-in microphones.

The leaked photo above is a 3D recreation and is bronze-colored. However, Optimo 2 will likely stick to Sonos’ traditional white and black color choices. If you are in the market for a new speaker, I would suggest holding off until this one drops.

The International Trade Commission ruled against Google this week in a lawsuit over five patents owned by Sonos. The small Santa Barbara run Sonos claimed that Google had infringed on their inventions after a 2013 collaboration. During this collaboration, Google was able to look under the hood of Sonos technology.

There was much evidence that supports that Google then used this proprietary information to develop and market their own products, and then freeze Sonos out. Judges ruled against the tech giant initially in August of last year. And affirmed their final decision this week. This recent development means Google will be paying the piper soon.

Google has been found guilty of

“importing, selling for importation or selling in the United States after importation certain audio players and controllers, components thereof, and products containing the same that infringe one or more claims.”

The conglomerate will have 60 days to shut down their chrome cast products and smart speakers. And they will also have to suspend all importation of products and technologies that infringe on those patents. Additionally Google will “set a bond in the amount of 100 percent of the entered value” to Sonos.

This is a rare win for the little guy in a world where monopolies like Google, Facebook, and Amazon continue to tighten their stranglehold on the capitalist world that humans inhabit. Maybe this is a first sign of weakness… a kink in the armor of the Titans that are doomed to fall.

Starting October 12th, IKEA and Sonos‘ newest lineup of Symfonisk Bluetooth speaker lamps will be available to the US and select European markets. They first released their Symfonisk line back in 2019, which comprises various Sonos quality speakers built into different pieces of furniture. Now, their latest model of Symfonisk comes with its lamp base and shade sold separately. This allows you to mix and match for personal customization to your home’s vibe.

Choose between a black or white lamp base, which is designed to be slightly smaller than the older model. Product owner, Stjepan Begic, analyzed user reports and decided to make it smaller so that they can fit the lamp on their nightstand. For the shades, choose between textile or glass. Both come in black and white with an E26/E27 socket that supports more ranges of bulbs. Plus, get ready for a wider and more room-filling sound.

Now, some find the new design to be way less attractive than its predecessors. The lamps also run similar to the previous generation, at $179 for glass and $169 for textile. The base alone costs $152, and a textile cover adds $24 more while the glass cover comes out to an additional $35. Earlier this year, we covered their picture frame speaker collaboration and it looks like it could make for a great housewarming gift. The home furniture titan and multi-room audio product manufacturer continue to innovate new solutions to enhance sound and music.

So, do you want to release the sweet sound of your home? Explore IKEA and Sonos’ collection of Symfonisk WiFi speakers, table lamps, bookshelf speakers–all products that have high-quality sound for an affordable price. Find the one that fits your aesthetic or even gift them. Plus, who doesn’t want some snazzy IKEA furniture? Take a look at their latest creation and let us know what you think.

Sonos and IKEA have partnered up for a new model of Symfonisk home speakers, according to some leaks. The Picture Frame is medium-sized with a flat-panel WiFi speaker available for mounting. Their furniture may be hard to pronounce, but we may find this speaker can fulfill its purpose.

New Solutions To Enhance Sound And Music

Firstly, you can mount it on the wall or set it on a shelf with a kickstand. Secondly, with the sound quality of Sonos, you can bet that it’ll bring you a better listening experience. Thirdly, everyone can enjoy room-filling sound and a beautiful piece of art. Deck it out with some LED light strips paired with sound movement and you’re good to go.

I am all about a minimalistic feel with chic, modern edge. I like crisp cut corners, and a monotone color palette. Paired with technology to make music listening at home better, I don’t see what could be bad. Even though the world is starting to open back up, many have bought homes in other places. Enhance your new home with amenities that’ll create the right atmosphere for coming back to. For IKEA and Sonos, they believe that the importance of sound and its positive effect on life at home is influential.

Other items within the line include the lamp and bookshelf speaker. What’s more, is the speaker will come in black or white, with interchangeable fronts to offer different looks. It costs $199, with built-in WiFi, connects to Sonos’ hardware and pairs with 100 different streaming services. With volume and play/pause buttons within the frame, you save space in style while living a smarter lifestyle every day.

“Each SYMFONISK speaker combines the Sonos sound experience with IKEA design in surprising new ways, creating products neither company would create alone. Sonos’ acoustic design means the picture frame speaker sounds amazing for such a compact shape, and the Sonos app means it is effortless to set up and effortless to use. This long-term collaboration continues to deliver exciting new ideas that will bring great listening experiences to homes across the globe – we look forward to delivering more unique products together in the future.”
Sara Morris, Principal Product Manager at Sonos

SONOS keeps presenting new products for audiophiles. This time, the American company announced a new portable speaker named SONOS Roam. Despite SONOS being known for its high-quality products, it is also fair to say that their products are not cheap. Now, the company presents its most affordable speaker yet.

This new product is designed to be used on the go. Amongst its impressive features, it offers around 10-hour battery life on a single charge, wireless Qi charging dock, and it is waterproof for up to 30 minutes. As another product of the SONOS family, the Roam also has a connection to an extra speaker of the brand. Besides, SONOS Roam also offers the possibility to swap to the nearest speaker by pressing and holding play/pause button.

SONOS Roam Offer Many Innovative Features

On top of that, SONOS Roam does a great job when managing WiFi connections as it is able to automatically switch between available connections. The device is able to detect the distance with the source and switch from WiFi to Bluetooth. This wonderful feature improves connectivity, which was a huge problem for portable speakers. Regarding the hardware of the device, it contains two class-H amps, one tweeter, one mid-woofer driver, and a Trueplay system.
