Now, over a month later, Kavinsky has indicated he and fellow Olympics performers, Phoenix and Angèle, are releasing a new version of “Nightcall.” The collaboration was announced Monday (September 17) on social media with a mysterious billboard featuring Kavinsky’s Ferrari and a phone number. Calling the number revealed a short message from the artists and a preview of the upcoming remix.

‘Nightcall’ has a bit of history that pre-dates the 2024 Olympics, as it was featured in the official soundtrack of the 2011 film Drive and has the legendary Daft Punk member, Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo, as its producer. How It Works

We’re all familiar with Shazam. It uses similar audio fingerprinting methods and tries to match the tempo and structure near perfect to obtain a result. But, you either need good data to figure out that song at someone’s festival set or you get a completely random suggestion from a different genre. So, it doesn’t always work. Google Assistant, though, uses deep neural networks so their song recognition is more advanced. This means that it can detect samples chopped or time-stretched, while also being under a second long.

“If the sample you are trying to find is part of a much longer drawn-out chord or texture, you can time-stretch or crossfade a loop to make the AI think it’s longer. You can also repitch the sample to form a chord progression if you guess it correctly.”

This technology is fairly new but scratches the surface of its potential: sample spotting. The tech will get more reliable over time, as advancements in AI continue. Tracklib reports that this new method “puts control into the hands of anyone looking for certain samples, as opposed to relying on a fingerprinting system fully controlled by a tech giant.” Plus, original owners can access multitracks, and not have to manually edit the audio to isolate any samples.

Apple Music announced that they are partnering with several dance music companies including DJ-Kicks, Boiler Room, and Tomorrowland. They plan to upload mixes and compensate the rights holders behind them. This means that not only will the DJs performing get a piece of the pie, but those who are sampled as well. Apple Music will build on Shazam’s technology that will help to identify and compensate the individual creators behind each mix. If Rihanna gets sampled, then she gets credit and compensation too. 

Some mixes are already live – Kaskade’s July 17th performance at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles is available for streaming now, among others. It will include both festival performances and club sets, and the platform will continue to expand in the coming months.

The application can identify music, movies, advertising, and television shows, based on a short sample played and using the microphone on the device. Apple bought the app in 2018 for a reported $400 million.

It is not the first time that the company shares curious data. Last year, Shazam shared a list of the Top 10 Shazamed Dance Tracks Of The Summer In Ibiza. Now, the company joined forces with Kiss FM – a popular radio station from the UK- to analyze data. The result of this research is a list of the 50 most Shazamed summer tracks during the last decade. During the investigation, both companies registered many electronic tracks at the top during the summer months for the last 10 years.

The results are now available and we can see that many EDM anthems are on the list. MØ & DJ Snake’s ‘Lean On’ reached the top. In the second position, we can find the Latin song by Luis Fonsi & Daddy Yankee and Justin Bieber named ‘Despacito’. ‘Wake Me Up’, one of Avicii‘s masterpieces reached the third step of the podium. Definitely a track from 2013 that never gets old.

If we keep looking at the list, we can find other wonderful hits. Lost Frequencies with ‘Are you with me’, Oliver Heldens & Becky Hill with ‘Gecko’, or Sam Feldt’s ‘Show me love’ are also in the top 10.

‘Wake Me Up’ was released in 2013. It features American singer Aloe Blacc. Incubus guitarist, Mike Einziger is featured as well. It is a perfect mix between folk music and EDM.
