Pioneer DJ announced the release of a new 2-channel DJ controller that targets complete beginners. As a matter of fact, the DDJ-FLX4 is a simpler version of the four-channel DDJ-FLX6, which landed in November 2020. This easy-to-use DJ controller features a simple, user-friendly design whilst offering a professional feel. It can be used with multiple DJ applications making it the perfect fit for starting DJs.

The DDJ-FLX4 allows you to connect to a PC, Mac, iPhone, iPad, or Android phone or tablet. Moreover, starting in 2023, rekordbox users are going to be able to connect to their device via Bluetooth® or USB cable. Obviously, Pioneer DJ really wants to make DJing accessible to the mass.

A new feature also debuts with the Pioneer DDJ-FLX4: Smart Mixing. It is designed for those new to the craft, and is split into Smart Fader—which automatically adjusts the volume, bass volume, and BPM of the music to enable smooth transitions—and Smart CFX, which applies a combination of effects at the twist of a knob.

The USB audio output on the Pioneer DDJ-FLX4 of the sound from the microphone allows users to be free from the need for external equipment such as a mixer or soundcard to add their voice to their mix. Instead, the sound from the microphone is output from the controller along with the music, so it is easy to share a set via a stream from a single computer.

The new Pioneer DDJ-FLX4 2-channel controller is officially on the market at the retail price of $299. For more information about the new controller, visit Pioneer DJ’s website, and check out the promotional clip below.

In 2019, there are still so many new tributes to the EDM legend, Avicii. There’s the Tim Bergling Foundation and even his lifelike wax figure at Madame Tussauds New York

Recently, Nintendo dropped a new trailer for AVICII Invector which was created in collaboration with the late DJ. That’s right; you’ll have another wonderful way to remember the musician that affected so many people’s lives!

“AVICII Invector celebrates Avicii’s life and music by immersing players inside the pulsing rhythms, evocative lyrics, and beautiful melodies he created. He was an amazing talent, and as an advocate for mental health, I hope and believe this project will bring Tim Bergling’s wonderful spirit to a world that can benefit from it.”
Leo Zullo – Wired Productions Managing Director

Thankfully, the game will feature a whopping 25 chart-topping singles from Avicii, including ‘Lay Me Down‘, ‘Without You’ and ‘Wake Me Up‘. Nintendo confirms, “[e]ach track is built to perfectly match the on-screen visuals taking you through a musical odyssey of serene exploration.

If the exciting announcement hasn’t pulled at your heartstrings, this just might. Also, an unspecified amount of the game’s profits will be donated to Avicii’s namesake Tim Bergling Foundation.

It has been widely known for years that operating systems like Windows and Macintosh each have their own limitations. When it came to music production, some of these limitations were blaring. Mac users had access to Logic, a native OSX application; Windows users had access to FL Studio, which is an Image-Line product. That is not to say that producers do not use other digital audio workstations, or DAWS for short, such as Abelton, Cubase, or Reason, but FL Studio & Logic Pro X were solely for their respective operating systems.

But times are changing! In their newest update, FL Studio 20 changes up the status quo, making FL Studio now available to Mac users. In years past Image-Line has teased full compatibility with the Mac OS through various beta testings and product statements. Until now, serious Mac users have stayed away from the FL line because of its tendency of crash and system instability, but that may change soon.

Fl Studio Update

From their website, Image-Line states:

“FL Studio is a complete software music production environment or Digital Audio Workstation (DAW). Representing more than 20 years of innovative development it has everything you need in one package.. compose, arrange, record, edit, mix and master professional quality music.”

Some of the newest features on the DAW are multi-track recording, time-stretching and pitch shifting. The update will also provide a clearer mode of audio editing, resulting in even more advanced audio production. When it comes to sequencing, FL includes its state of the art, industry-leading “Piano Roll Editor” which is very user friendly. It will also enable users to record MIDI, as well as better control of patterns, and feature a rather linear workflow.

One of the last areas Image-Line has upgraded is in its mixing & effects. Through multi-track automation of its mixer, it will allow users to achieve a more polished, and defined sound. Lastly, Image-Line upgraded its VST plugin support, further enabling users to use a wider arrange of third party plugins.

Power Users & Pricing

Some of dance music’s biggest names started with previous versions of FL Studio, and some still use the Belgian Software. Afrojack started with FL, and continues on in conjunction with other workstations. The late Avicii was known to be a heavy FL user, with some of his biggest hits made with the software. Perhaps the biggest name behind FL Studio is Martin Garrix – you can watch here as he constructs his breakout hit ‘Animals.’

The upgraded software will come in four tiers, allowing users to decide what aspects of the software they need. In addition, unlike other DAWS, FL includes free lifetime updates. Someone just beginning their production journey may opt for the ‘Fruity Edition‘ which enable “Melody & Loops Creation”, priced at $99.00. More serious producers may opt for the ‘All Plugins Bundle‘ which comes with complete access, priced at $899.00. Image-Line also provides their ‘Producer Edition’ as well as their ‘Signature Bundle’.

Further pricing and plans can be found here. Below is the full trailer for the release. Happy producing!

A proud brother of the PC Master Race, deadmau5, is no stranger to video gaming. When he’s not producing new and exciting music on his Twitch stream in the Creative category, he can be seen racking up goals in Rocket League, slaying mobs in Diablo III, or punching trees in Minecraft on his monstrous gaming PC. You can also learn to build your own with this how to guide from TheGreatSetup.com. In fact, many of you will recall that his name came about when he found a dead mouse inside his computer and was aptly named that “dead mouse guy” by friends.

“Music is 80 percent fun and 20 percent work. Video games for me is all fun.”

Joel recently spoke to Rolling Stone US after a Black Ops 3 stream event (video below) in New York City about his background with video games, among other brief topics.

“I’m a video game enthusiast. I love video games! They were a huge part of my upbringing in their early form when I was all about Dig Dug and River Raid. As they evolved, so did my music-making, and we just kind of grew up together like cool friends. It’s something I do still to this day. When I’m working on something and need to take a little break, I’ll go down and play some video games. It’s just a good time-sink to take your mind off shit” Joel said.

Unsurprisingly, deadmau5 has drawn quite a bit of inspiration for his unique sound from his history with playing video games, with 8bit influences making appearances in his music every now and then.

“The first video games that I ever played didn’t even have soundtracks. It was just a bunch of blips and bloops, and then as the technology evolved we started hearing soundtracks to early NES titles and Super Nintendo titles. I was actually really taken by the – if you will – soundtrack for Castlevania and Super Castlevania for Super Nintendo. That was like, “Holy shit! These are cool songs!” Now you can just take professional-level recordings as is – sometimes better – and just throw them in games.

So I was like, “Wow! This totally caught up.” And it runs parallel to me. I love making music, and some of mine lends itself to video-game-soundtrack-type stuff. We’ve been back and forth, of course, in and out of each other’s industries, kind of playing off each other. We’re just cool buddies, me and video games. Back in the day we even did a thing for DJ Hero where we went in a mo-cap studio and recorded me “DJ’ing” or whatever.”

When asked about whether or not he has any intentions of quitting touring and just living out the rest of his days producing and gaming, deadmau5 had this to say:

“No, no. Never. No. Because I owe it to my fans to tour. If I wanted to just cash out and do my own thing and go ride ATVs for the rest of my life, then I’d just cash the fuck out and stop spending money in the music and show up to festivals with a couple of USB sticks, stick ’em in the player and just make money like a fucking madman. I’d be Calvin fuckin’ Harris. But that’s not what I want to do. I like the challenges that touring provides: all the logistics involved, all the technology and constantly keeping in the front of production that looks great.

There were only so many moments in music history where precedents had been set, like Daft Punk in their pyramid and then me with my LED mouse head at Coachella in the cube. I can count that on one hand, how many times those things have happened, across the fucking span of music. That’s my goal: to be the guy who unveils that crazy fucking thing that people saw and then tour it a little while so we can share it with everyone else.

If you want to retire because you’re sick of fucking playing a CD, do it! Fuck, we won’t miss you. Yeah, that was rough for you. Anyways, I have the “me” thing going on, so I’ll just be over there.”

You can read the rest of Rolling Stone’s interview with Joel via the link below.

Imagine-Line, the developers of the widely popular electronic music production software, FL Studio, have confirmed that the once PC-only software will now be released as a native application for Mac OS X. Although tech-savvy Mac producers have found a few ways to work around FL’s PC-only capability, an authentic Mac version of the next FL release, FL Studio 12, will make things a little easier for the masses when it becomes available some time in 2015.

Although Imagine-Line is still working out the kinks when it comes to adopting and translating FL’s PC software into a configuration for Mac, the developers expect success in the near future. Before this new development, their software was written in a way that was difficult to break away from Windows. A recent statement from Imagine-Line detailed the current development of the project: “…we never thought that was a good idea, and that’s why we never did it before. But, things have changed, so let’s call this progress.”

This progress currently includes switching over “operating system dependent calls” from Windows to Mac, which seems to be the most tedious and attention-consuming aspect of the change-over. The statement further revealed that “the plugin testing is progressing nicely, and so the team has turned their attention to FL Studio 12 itself. It’s a long and slow process and we can’t make any promises, since we may come across unexpected and or unsolvable technical problems.”

Even though Imagine-Line themselves did not think that making a Mac capable FL Studio was a “good idea”, many eager producers who are waiting for its forthcoming release will beg to differ. We hope the rest of the software development for the first ever Mac capable FL Studio program continues on its promising onward progression, as we know that many, many producers will be happy to get their hands on FL Studio 12 for Mac in 2015.
