The event honors ‘Dia De Los Muertos’, a Mexican holiday remembering loved ones who are no longer with us. In remembrance, Insomniac plans a day with beautiful art installations, thoughtful costumes, and stages with vibey music.

Speaking of vibes, this was probably one of the best crowds I’ve been a part of in a while. While I was alone during the first half of the festival, I was surprised by the number of polite strangers who interacted with me. In today’s festival culture, that can be hard to come by.

Vibes? Check. What else? Read on to see why this festival should be on the top of your bucket list.

The Venue

This was my first time at the Los Angeles State Historic Park and I thought it fit the vibe perfectly for the festival. It vaguely reminded me of Surrey Park in Vancouver, Canada, which hosts Fvded in the Park. The best part about venues like these is the freedom to roam around. They make for the best festival grounds because it feels like an adult playground. The limited space in a closed venue can sometimes hinder an experience if the crowd is rowdy, so settings like this are most preferred. The openness of the LA State Historic Park allowed enough space during the performances, and it let people go from stage to stage without too much traffic.

Artwork

A big part of ‘Dia De Los Muertos’ is the artistry. While trekking across the venue, there were various art installations to look at. Large sugar skull statues with colorful floral designs could be seen from a mile away. In the culture, the colors symbolize different meanings; for example, pink signifies celebration and white is a symbol of purity and hope.

Probably one of the coolest things to see at a festival is how everyone chooses to express themselves. Festival-goers were also a work of art with spirited costumes themselves. If you didn’t dress up, face painting was available at the event, so there was no excuse to not be a part of the fun.

Stages

Insomniac had two stages at the venue: the Duro Stage and Hard Stage. The former primarily featured house and techno, whose acts included John Bryars, Rosa Pistola, Goddollars & Paradise, Lauren Lane, Melé, Justin Martin, Damian Lazarus, and The Martinez Brothers. The Duro Stage resembles Insomniac’s infamous art cars, with a church-like background. It overlooked the Los Angeles skyline, making it one of the most picturesque views of the event.

The Hard Stage featured a more diverse lineup, which included Josh Pan b2b X&G, Brownies & Lemonade residents, Softest Hard, 1788-L, Elohim, TOKiMONSTA, ZHU, and the legendary Dog Blood. The iconic stage is usually at every Hard event and was a grand setting for its performers.

Performing Acts

With this year’s talented lineup, every set was beyond amazing. The fact that there were only two stages also made it easy to watch everyone you wanted to see. However, we do want to highlight a few sets that stood out to us.

1788-L

1788-L was definitely the most bass-heavy artist at the event. In spite of being at a more house-oriented festival, the emerging producer did not tone down his heavy beats at all. He performed many of his originals from his two albums, Sentience and Synthetik, as well as his popular collaboration with Rezz, ‘Hex’. The sun was beginning to set at the end of his performance, and the main stage audience headbanged into the night.

TOKiMONSTA

TOKiMONSTA is an inspirational DJ, as she has a very unique story. After losing the ability to understand music for a period of her life, she has made a huge comeback with her shows and always puts on a rad performance. After seeing her play a heavy set at Hard Summer Green Tent 2018, and a chiller set when she opened for ZHU’s Ringos Desert tour, I had no idea what to expect from her this time around. Heavy or chill? She gave us both. The female DJ gave the audience a vibey set, with melodic synths and hard beats. You never know what you’re going to get with TOKiMONSTA, which makes her one of my favorite artists to see.

The Martinez Brothers

After missing them at CRSSD fest this year, I made it a goal to see them at Day of the Dead (even though Dog Blood conflicted with them… damn you conflicts). This was my first time seeing them, and they did not disappoint. Even though the Duro Stage was relatively small compared to the Hard Stage, the sound production was top notch. The Martinez Brother’s techno beats vibrated through your body into your soul. They definitely brought us to church, and it was a sight to see.

I had the privilege of attending the festival with my colleague Matt Sierra who will now share his experience at ZHU and Dog Blood’s sets.

ZHU

Having just seen both Elohim, and TOKiMONSTA destroy the HARD stage dancefloor, I wasn’t too sure how the crowd would react to seeing both ZHU’s Blacklizt set, and Dog Blood, one after another. As the clocks neared 8 PM, the crowd seemed to grow by the second. You could see that people were leaving, and going, in preparation for the following sets. The thing is, it was obvious that more people were coming to HARD than were leaving. As attendees moved in droves between stages, it was plain to see who they came to see.

After a brief 10-minute intermission following TOKiMONSTA’s set, ZHU took the stage for his special Blacklizt set. Now, I personally had never seen a Blacklizt set. I had, however, managed to catch ZHU for the first time at this past EDCLV. That set blew me away. Now, despite the fact that I knew beforehand that Blacklizt would be different, my expectations were already sky-high. It is safe to say that my expectations were not only met, but blown out of the water.

It was interesting to see how minimalistic the stage production was set up for Blacklizt. I guess you could say it added to the vibe. Throw in the creepy mannequins, and you could definitely call this a spooky affair. Blacklizt played most of the tracks we know and love Zhu for, albeit in a different fashion.

One of my favorite moments of this set was hearing the ‘Faded’ vocals blaring over an instrumental, other than the original mix. As a fan of deeper music, I can definitely appreciate the direction that Zhu has taken with his Blacklizt project. I honestly can’t wait to catch another set. Plus, it was interesting to hear him surprise us with some straight techno. If you like the idea behind Kaskade’s Redux project, you’ll definitely want to check this out.

Dog Blood

After a 20-minute intermission, you would imagine that a crowd might turn down a bit. As the time for Dog Blood to take the stage neared, the exact opposite happened. Everyone in the crowd went bonkers with excitement. As much as I would have liked to see The Martinez Brothers, I couldn’t pass up Dog Blood. Since the creation of this side project in 2012, I had been yearning to catch their set. After more than seven years, the time was finally here.

Set to the backdrop of downtown Los Angeles, this closing set from the duo had all the makings of a true rager. I couldn’t have been more right. Dog Blood played a good number of what you can only assume is unreleased music. I say this, as Shazam failed to pick numerous tracks through their hour & fifteen-minute set. I could try to give you a good rundown of what I witnessed, but I would be doing you a disservice. This is one of those rarities that you seriously need to see for yourself.

In Closing

Hard Day of the Dead was one of the best times I’ve had in a while. Something very important to me is the festival vibe, and I enjoyed vibing to the music with my fellow attendees. After a second successful year, we hope this unique festival is here to stay. Until next year, Dia De Los Muertos.

Halloween is in full effect, and that means one thing, Halloween events. With Wynwood Fear Factory and Escape: Psycho Circus already behind us, there are only a few festive events waiting to take place. One of these events, is HARD Day Of The Dead.

While not exactly a Halloween event, ‘Día de Los Muertos‘ is just about as close as it gets, it is in November after all. HARD DOTD is set to take place this upcoming weekend, in Downtown Los Angeles. In preparation of HARD DOTD, we’ve got a special surprise for you.

They have also been blessed with a 2-hour sunset set from Fisher, so you know everyone will be losing it once the sun goes down.

HARD Events has always been known for incredible lineups. if you recently attended HARD Summer, I’m sure you would agree. I had the fortune of attending last year’s HARD Day Of The Dead, and the lineup was amazing. It featured everyone from Justice to Shiba San, Knife Party, Die Antwoord, and many more. While this lineup was one for the books, it seems as though the folks behind HARD are set to outdo themselves.

Meet The 2019 Lineup

This year’s lineup features heavy-hitters like Dogblood (Boys Noize + Skrillex), The Martinez Brothers, TOKiMONSTA, and Blacklizt, which is Zhu‘s deep house & techno alias. In addition to these artists, you can also expect to catch Justin Martin, Elohim, Damian Lazarus, 1788-L, and Melé. It should be noted that there is also a special Josh Pan b2b X&G set on the lineup, which you do not want to miss.

If you’ve yet to attend an event at the LA State Historic Park, you might want to check HARD Day of The Dead. The venue is set in the heart of the city and features a beautiful backdrop of downtown LA. The park contains 34 acres of nature at its finest. HARD Day Of The Dead, is back from the dead. Taking place Saturday, November 3rd, the one-day event is looking to be a fun one. With over 15+ acts set to play across two stages, there is going to be more than enough music to go around. We decided to put this list together to give you a heads up on 5 acts we think you should totally check out!

Jack Beats

If you’ve ever heard Jack Beats before, or seen a set of theirs, you’ll know why their on this list. If you haven’t, then HARD D.O.T.D. is your chance to do so. Known for being able to take elements from all different types of music and use them in their own works, the UK duo has come to be known for their eclectic sound. I recently caught a b2b set between them & AC Slater at this Fall’s CRSSD and it’s one of the reasons they are on this list.  Check them out at HARD Day Of The Dead.

Knife Party

Australia’s own Rob Swire and Gareth McGrillen make up one of the biggest names in Electronic Music known as Knife Party. While also a part of Pendulum, Knife Party bring a completely different sound. Known for tracks like ‘Internet Friends‘ and ‘Antidote’ with Swedish House Mafia, they are not to be missed. If you haven’t seen them yet, take a listen to their new podcast to get hyped for HARD Day Of The Dead.

Shiba San

If you like house music, then you’ve probably heard of Shiba San. His track ‘Okay‘ can easily be called the house anthem of 2014. With other tunes to back him up like ‘Show Me, Show Me‘, it’s easy to see that he really brings the heat. This is a set you do not want to miss. If you’re a fan of Dirtybird, you’ll want to be here.

Felix Da Housecat

An integral part of the Chicago House Scene, Felix da Housecat is a legend in his own right. The House DJ is also the owner of  Radikal Fear Records, so he’s really able to push the music in the direction he desires. If you want a taste of his vibe, check out his 2001 album, ‘Kittenz and thee Glitz‘.

Justice

I feel like this French duo needs no introduction, but I’ll give you one anyways. If you’ve ever sung along to the vocal of ‘We Are Your Friends, You’ll Never Alone again..” then you’ve heard Justice. Or at least their remix of Simian‘s track ‘Never Be Alone‘. Another one of their monster tracks is the song D.A.N.C.E., which was famously remixed by MSTRKRFT. It should be noted that the HARD Day Of The Dead show will be Justice’s last performance of the decade as well. This is one you do not want to miss!

We’re happy to announce the event’s stacked lineup with some returning favorites from previous years, along with the announcement of two stages set for the event this year: the Live Stage and Stage Two.

First, for the Live Stage, returning favorites Justice are one of the big names set to make a comeback to the event. This will be the last live show that they plan to play with their current Woman Worldwide production. It’s a fitting transitionary performance for the iconic French duo, who actually played the very first Day of The Dead, coincidentally, on November 3, 2012.

Another name announced for the Live Stage are the South African rap pioneers Die Antwoord, known as one of the world’s most provocative live acts. Every live performance from them is quite the spectacle. With the setting and occasion of Day Of The Dead, they are sure to bring forth something beautiful and beguiling.

Some of the other great names rounding out the performances on the Live Stage also include Australia’s provocative dance headliners Knife Party, anonymous genre-busting producer Cashmere Cat, bass house legend Jack Beats, Latin vocalist Fuego, Deadbeat’s own 16-year old DJ wonderkid DNMO, and LA club master Thee Mike B.

The second stage that was announced today – aptly named Stage Two – is set to feature some of the best emerging and established names in house, like Reggaeton icon Playero will DJ, a live set from Rodriguez Jr, and a back-to-back set from the deep talents of Lee Foss and Felix Da Housecat. Repping HARD’s 4/4 stylings will be DIRTYBIRD mainstays like Shiba San, femme fatale J.Phlip,  Dateless, and the label’s newest star OMNOM. LA’s favorite house duo Rybo and Lubelski will bring the Desert Hearts party vibes as well.

Hard Day of The Dead is set to make its return for one day on November 3rd at the 34-acre grassy outdoor oasis, the LA State Historic Park. The park is located in Downtown Los Angeles and also happens to be just steps away from the Metro Gold Line, as well as just a mile from Union Station.

Tickets are expected to go on sale on tomorrow, September 27 @ 12PM PT on the event’s official page.

In business, you can one day find yourself kicked out of your own company – just look at Steve Jobs. Now this same heart-wrenching maneuver is hitting the dance world as Live Nation has taken the step of kicking out HARD Events‘ Founder and President, Gary Richards aka Destructo. HARD was acquired by Live Nation in 2012.

Current rumors explain that Live Nation does not want to book Destructo on events like Holy Ship and are making moves to force him out of the company. This is troublesome as Gary Richards is to HARD what Pasquale Rotella is to Insomniac.

However, HARD Events has come upon bad fortune of late. HARD Summer had a rough few years and Hard Day of the Day was cancelled last year. HARD Summer has also been forced to change venues for many years now, and obviously Live Nation has had enough.

The thing Live Nation doesn’t realize is the love that the community has for Destructo, as he has built quite the community with HARD’s events. Think, for example, the family that exists with Holy Ship – notably known as the #shipfam.

DJs like Boys Noize and Skrillex are showing their support for Richards on social media, and we can imagine that the hashtag #nogarynoship will only continue to grow in popularity today. A petition has also already been started to show support against the maneuver.

After closing down for a $20 million renovation in 2014, the former home of HARD Summer, Day of the Dead, FYF Fest, and many other events, is finally hosting another music event on its grounds. Los Angeles State Historic Park was last used by HARD for their 2013 edition of HARD Day of the Dead before closing down for a multi-year-long renovation to revitalize the grounds.

Since being kicked away from their venue, HARD has bounced around various venues including the Pomona Fairplex, Whittier Narrows Recreation Area and the Fontana Auto Club Speedway, where it will return for HARD Summer this August.

L.A. State Historic Park is finally planning to open its newly renovated grounds to the public on April 22, 2017. The renovations were scheduled to take only one year, but the project suffered from several setbacks. Good news is, the park is finally ready to open and appears to be prepared to host some music festivities.

Today, it was announced that a brand new, one-day, 21+ music, art and food festival called Skyline will be taking place at the venue on Saturday, May 20, 2017. The festival is being put on by Radio Hill and 89.9 KCRW, with other collaborators including DoLA, Space Yacht and The Well.

The lineup for the event consists of Miike Snow, Duke Dumont, Lido, Eden, Michael, Elohim and Jason Bentley. The festival will have a 2:00 p.m. start time and will presumably be one stage, unless other artists are added to the lineup at a later date.

Hard Summer Music Festival appears to be officially on the books for this coming summer as a schedule for the Fontana Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, CA, located east of Los Angeles, lists “HARD Music Festival” on Saturday, August 5th and Sunday, August 6th. Twitter user @SwankyAssBrian posted a photo of the schedule he received at the Fontana Auto Club Speedway while attending the Autoclub 400.

To coincide with this news, HARD founder Gary Richards, more commonly known as Destructo, posted a video on his Instagram at the Autoclub 400 hinting at the use of this location for the upcoming festival. Hard Summer took place at this same venue last year with a varied lineup spread over five different stages across the speedway.

Richards opted to cancel last year’s rendition of their Halloween festival, HARD Day of the Dead, in order to focus his time and resources on this year’s HARD Summer.

HARD has gone through a great deal of turmoil over the past several years with deaths occurring at their festivals and arrest numbers in the hundreds. Although Hard Summer has become an LA staple that continually offers one of the best local lineups of the year, it has been met with frequent fatalities, arrests, lawsuits, and complaints of poor organization.

We’re hoping that HARD can pull off a comeback and bring LA a well-organized, safe festival with a stacked lineup. Check out the picture showing off the official dates below:

Gary Richards apparently made the decision to cancel this years DOTD earlier in the year because he needed more time and resources to plan the big location move for HARD Summer, troubled though it was. HARD Day of the Dead would also have needed a new location, and it was simply too big a lift for the company to do in close time proximity. The decision to skip 2016 was not due to deaths that occurred at HARD Summer, and no further comment has been made.
