The official FSOE Instagram page attributes the discontinuation of the event solely to the promoter. “Circumstances beyond our control” has been primarily attributed to the cause of cancellation by the label. This is contrary to their intentions is what it intends to clarify. “FSOE was fully committed to proceeding with the event” as a noteworthy point to note.

People appear to be on FSOE’s side on this one. As a matter of example, one of the top comments on said Instagram post reads as follows: “It’s common knowledge that NSW Police charge tens of thousands of dollars more than their counterparts in other states to patrol events such as these. I was told that the organisers needed 5,000 attendees just to break even after the police fees for security and sniffer dogs, as well as the cost of medics, land tax and private ferries.“

They then follow with “The promoters could have done a better job in marketing the event, but when you have examples of a festival where the NSW police charged $67,000 for patrolling a 22,000 crowd, VIC police charging only $7,500 for a crowd of 30,000 and Queensland police $37,000 for a crowd of 20,000, it’s not unreasonable to suggest that the music scene in NSW is being unfairly targeted as a cash cow for police coffers“.

Refund inquiries are to be directed to the event promoter as per the official announcement. FSOE Australia was scheduled to take place on Sydney’s Cockatoo Island. It would have seen the likes of Alex M.O.R.P.H, Aly & Fila B2B John O’Callaghan, Ferry Corsten, John 00 Fleming & Roger Shah gracing the stage.

It’s Progressive Trance time again! Producer Simon Gregory has made his official FSOE Argento debut as a solo artist with his latest single ‘Finding Faith‘, unveiled on Friday. The single follows a string of releases that have put the British in the spotlight due to consistent quality across his work.

Just this year alone, the man behind today’s single has been involved in a handful of tunes, for instance, ‘Tension‘ and ‘Apollo‘ alongside Nitrous Oxide, and on his own, he’s released ‘F.O.S‘ and — my personal favourite — ‘Feel Music In The Air‘. ‘Finding Faith’ comes to be his first FSOE Argento release outside of his Digital Drift pieces.

‘Finding Faith’

As we mentioned previously, Gregory’s latest is a fine craft, blending filth and melody in equal parts. A subtly-saturated bassline is the companion to the kick this time during the first drop, giving more room for that old Trance spirit we all know and love. Progressively, the chords and the progression build up and turn the song into a symphony.

During the break, plucks, pads, arpeggios, and pianos all come alive to set up a sky-high atmosphere, which doesn’t finish building with snares and instead simply shifts over all the elements to the melodic drop. It’s a simple formula, but a rather successful one. We’re always delighted to hear that old Trance sound back in store.

Paul and Leon’s two-part compilation showcases expertise, as it blends dynamism and elegance quite seamlessly. It goes without saying, the tracks themselves are named ‘Arhat’, and ‘Perspectives’, respectively.

Sober, hypnotising, and with a subtle note of a deep jungle, ‘Arhat’ is characterised by a handful of melodic elements, put to use in a not-so-melodic manner, pointing in a direction and reflecting upon it. That’s the energy it gives me: calm and reflecting.

Perspectives

The more energetic of the two, ‘Perspectives’ features a steady, pointy rolling percussion from the very start, and evolves the overall aura with a playful bassline, textures that turn into plucks, and then open up to leads, and back to Earth. The song is in itself a journey through the elements, and energy.

Friday, sweet Friday. We waited for you for so long! Six days to be exact. And here’s the reward: steamy, ready-to-serve new music. One of today’s releases comes from the collaboration of two massive artists regarding the Trance and Progressive Trance scene: Nitrous Oxide and Simon Gregory, this time under their newest conjoint alias, Digital Drift. Their latest landscape? ‘Tension‘, out now on FSOE Argento.

Chris, the man behind Nitrous Oxide, has been one of the leading artists in the scene, releasing a ton of his discography on Anjunabeats with breaking tracks such as ‘Follow You‘ featuring Aneym, ‘Magenta‘ — my personal favourite — and ‘Flat Six‘. Three albums into his career, he’s now the proud founder and head of the Oxidised Music record label.

Simon, on the other hand, is a Mondo resident by now, with a decent chunk of his songs signed on Darren Tate‘s imprint since 2017. Staying on the big leagues, some of his tracks can be found on Elliptical Sun, and even Anjunabeats.

Digital Drift

This is not the first time Chris and Simon merge their sounds: they first came together for the appropriately named ‘Fusion‘, one of the tracks which make up CD2 of the mighty Above & Beyond Anjunabeats Volume 16 compilation. Shortly after, they collaborated again to release ‘Black Alert‘ on Mondo Records.

They’ve now decided they like their fused sound enough to create a new alias altogether, and we can now refer to them as Digital Drift. Which sound will they adopt for this new chapter in the artists’ history? Well, we might have the answer.

Tension

A lovely piece of Progressive Trance is the result of the first-ever Digital Drift song. Enjoy floaty atmospheres, pounding beats, and an overall aura quite worthy of being highlighted as one of the year’s best so far.

Make your way to the song’s start to receive some pretty powerful acid leads, long background growls, mysterious pads, and an exquisite percussion arrangement. Into the break we go, and we’ll find a teasing garage loop, which ends up unraveling completely for the airy, floaty bliss of Trance awaiting: evolving pads paired with a classic piano, bringing you to the air completely. Past the buildup, the drop brings back the growls from the first drop, but now working in parallel with the melody. This truly is a piece of Trance music art, with many of the older elements added in a new fashion. Be careful, you may love it.

When word comes of a new single from Trance heavyweights Aly & Fila, there’s a preset in the minds of their fans that they can get ready for a new melodic and uplifting track that’s at least 138 bpm. With their new collaboration however, the duo teams up with Paul Thomas to craft a delightfully fresh Progressive House tune, a big step away from what they are well known for.

The new tune, named ‘UV‘, kicks off a brand new sub-label under Future Sound of Egypt, being named “FSoE UV“. The other collaborator on this track, Paul Thomas, is a progressive house veteran who will be the main person running A&R for this new sub-label. Paul will also be joining Aly & Fila for their milestone show celebrating 500 episodes of the “Future Sound of Egypt” radioshow, alongside the likes of Armin van Buuren and Ruben de Ronde.

While my personal view on this track is a positive one since I’m a big fan of both progressive house and trance, some of Aly & Fila’s fans are less than happy about the direction of the track. In the Facebook post announcing the track, there’s a split on how they feel. Some fans gave praise to the new sound and absolutely love it, while some comment hoping the duo doesn’t move completely away from their iconic sound, and that the track is just “boring” to them, since they expect much faster paced songs from them. They have also been criticized lately for including more progressive and deep house into their once all trance radioshow as well as their live sets.

I am confident that Aly & Fila will stay faithful to their signature trance sounds, but will experiment from time to time with this direction of their new sub-label. As for the subject of whether or not artists should experiment with new sounds, that’s an Op-Ed for another day. Who were the biggest influences early on in your career?

What were some of the biggest obstacles that stood in your way in pursuing your dream?

“When we first started touring in 2006 – 2007 was very abnormal to see a DJ from Egypt touring internationally , was normally Dutch or British DJs then American back then but through hard work from ourselves and our team around us we managed to overcome that obstacle”

What can we expect from your FSOE Island set – how will this be different than any of your previous sets?

“We always try to take the audience on a journey , each week we have new material from our label Future sound of Egypt and also producers around the world, which helps to include into sets”

Can you tell us about one of your most memorable experiences on tour?

“Well was a show we did locally in Cairo when we hosted Future Sound of Egypt 400 at the the Great Pyramids of Giza last September , that was something out of this world , to be able to perform at that backdrop was a dream come true for us”

What are any creative tricks you use to come up with inspiration and/or new melodies – how is the sound palette established?

“Working as a duo in the studio helps us to complete each other, Fila might come up with nice chords that Aly adds more to it and vise versa”

Who are your current favorite upcoming trance acts?

“To be honest we really like a lot of artists from our Future Sound of Egypt Label such as Ferry Tayle, Dan Stone, Darren Porter , Arctic Moon , James Dymond, ReOrder, Mohamed Ragab, LTN. Alex Ender , A&Z, Ahmed Romel, Bjorn Akesson , Alan Morris, Niko Zografos, Omar Sherif, Jonathan Carvajal, Monoverse , Sean Matthews and there is more and more great artists coming through”

What’s next for Aly & Fila and FSOE?

“We are working on our next Studio artist album , we have just released our first single of 2016 today – Aly & Fila x Luke Bond & Audrey Gallagher – Million Voices. We have more singles to release this year . Along with our team we have several Future Sound of Egypt Events in 2016 with FSOE Island at Governors Island in New York City on July 2nd and also FSOE 450 in Los Angeles at The Hollywood Palladium on July 3rd, we also have FSOE Love Mobile with Synergy and the Zurich Street Parade and also FSOE 450 in Victoria Warehouse in Manchester with more FSOE Events to announce. This week also sees our first trip to Ibiza of the summer where we are Residents for Cream @ Amnesia . We will continue to work hard pushing the Future Sound of Egypt Record label , Radio Show and Events and also work hard in studio to continue to release music”

Over the years, we’ve seen DJs perform at some pretty strange locations. There have been dance music events held at The Great Wall of China and inside of glaciers, but this latest one might take the cake.

Trance duo Aly & Fila are legends in their home country of Egypt, so when determining a location for the historic 400th edition of their Future Sound of Egypt radio show, it was a no-brainer. The guys will be performing at the Great Pyramid of Giza, which is the oldest of the Seven Ancient Wonders of the World as well as the only one that still remains intact. It is also worth noting that this will be a fairly intimate show, as there are only 2,000 tickets available.
