Belgian producer Pegassi has released his debut EP, Ascension, through his own Sweet Nothing label.
The four-track project marks a major milestone for Pegassi, whose real name is Sam Huybrecht. After working toward his career in electronic music for 14 years, Ascension brings together several sides of the sound behind his recent rise.
“This EP has been a long time coming,” Pegassi said. “Every track on it means something different to me, some of them you’ve heard in my sets, some of them you’ve never heard at all.”
The title track is one fans will already recognize. Pegassi played ‘Ascension’ in his sets for more than two years before officially releasing it in August. The track combines hard dance and heavy bass with percussion influenced by UK garage.
‘Forest Walk’ follows at 148 BPM, maintaining the energy with distorted kicks, fast hi-hats and an arpeggiated melody. Pegassi drew inspiration from the forest surrounding his studio near Antwerp and even incorporated bird sounds into the track.
The second half becomes more personal. ‘Twinflame’ was inspired by Pegassi’s relationship and the period when his girlfriend moved in with him. It maintains the energy of the EP while introducing a more personal idea behind the production.
Pegassi Gets Personal on ‘Circles’
The biggest change arrives with the closing track, ‘Circles.’
Pegassi wrote and recorded his own vocals for the song, something he has only done once before. The idea developed after he finished the instrumental but struggled to find the right lyrics. While searching for inspiration, he found himself walking in circles, eventually giving him the concept for the track.
That makes ‘Circles’ a fitting conclusion to a project built around growth. Ascension begins with music Pegassi has tested on festival stages for years and ends with one of its most personal moments.
“‘Ascension’ felt like the right name for it,” Pegassi said. “It’s where I am right now, and where I’m going.”
The EP also arrives during a major year for the Belgian producer. In 2026, Pegassi delivered a BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix and premiered his audiovisual show at Tomorrowland. His schedule has also included appearances at EDC Las Vegas and Awakenings.
His international reach continues to grow. Pegassi’s first Australian headline shows in Melbourne and Sydney are scheduled for December, with both dates already sold out.
Meanwhile, Sweet Nothing is developing beyond a home for his releases. Pegassi is expanding the label through its own events, including shows in London, Berlin and Amsterdam.
After years of singles and increasingly larger festival appearances, Ascension gives Pegassi his first complete project. Its four tracks capture both the high-energy sound behind his rise and the more personal direction he is beginning to explore.
