UMusic is bringing its music-focused hospitality concept to Austin, announcing plans for a massive new development combining a luxury hotel, private residences and a 10,000-capacity outdoor amphitheater.
The project overlooks the limestone hills and wildflowers of Texas Hill Country and exists on a 71-acre lot with its crowned jewel – White Rocks Amphitheater – situated at the center. As a whole, the development aims to design an open-air venue concept that’s integrated with the site’s surrounding natural landscape and plans a 2029 opening.
Unlike a conventional concert venue, White Rocks will sit within a larger entertainment ecosystem designed around music. Guests and residents of the property will have access to an indoor performance venue, professional recording and content studios, a nightclub and additional entertainment spaces. According to its official announcement, this will be the first UMusic Hotel property in the United States to include private residences, comprised of 600 units already made available for purchase.
UMusic’s Expansion Into the United States
Back in 2020, Universal Music Group and Dakia U-Ventures combined forces in their launch of UMusic Hotels. The global collection’s first three announced locations included experiential hotel properties in Atlanta, Georgia; Orlando, Florida; and Biloxi, Mississippi with an emphasis on mirroring the unique cultures present at each city. It’s worth noting that not all plans have come to fruition just yet as of this article’s publishing.
As a business partner, Dakia U-Ventures brings experience applying state-of-the-art technology to the hospitality and entertainment industries. They focus their investments in projects and startups seeking to disrupt traditional industry ecosystems and push the limits of live experiences.
What Does This Mean for Austin’s Music Scene?
UMusic Hotels is entering a city rich with live music history. Austin’s existing venue landscape already stretches from intimate clubs to 15,000-plus-seat arenas with major touring artists regularly passing through the city. Recent shows include Lady Gaga, Nine Inch Nails, A$AP Rocky, Ariana Grande and The Doobie Brothers, showing Austin’s pull not just for headline acts but across pop, rock, country and hip-hop genres and beyond.
White Rocks’ most notable distinction may not be its attractiveness to arena-level acts but its development as a singular component of a much larger music destination. Guest and resident access to their plethora of amenities could provide UMusic with the flexibility to appeal to different parts of the live music ecosystem, ranging from large touring acts to small, artist-focused content or recording sessions. As UMusic enters one of the country’s most established entertainment sites, they sit on a differentiated offering to attract music lovers and artists alike.
