Every once in a while, a festival moment hits you so hard it transcends the usual mainstage hype. That’s exactly what went down at Palm Tree Festival. Kygo delivered what might be the most emotional live tribute of his entire career, shocking everyone by brining out legendary bluegrass vocalist Dan Tyminski for a full-circle moment that tapped straight into EDM history.
A Callback to Ultra 2013
The duo initially teamed up to perform their own melodic collaboration, ‘Heaven On Your Mind.’ but the energy completely shifted when Kygo Pivoted into a surprise tribute to the late, great Avicii. The second the iconic chords of ‘Hey Brother’ started ringing out and Dan took the mic, the nostalgia was heavy.
For anyone who needs a quick history lession: Dan Tyminski’s voice is that of legend in dance music. Back in 2013, Avicii made the famously risky move to debut his country-meets-EDM sound at Ultra Miami, bringing out live acoustic instruments and bluegrass singers. At the time people were not a fans of the new sound. Many even said that the set flopped though it ended up be the most groundbreaking creative gamble of his career.
Remembering Avicii
When Avicii’s True album dropped later that year, ‘Hey Brother’ became a generational dance anthem. Ever since we tragically lost Time Bergling in 2018, these tracks have carried a massive, bittersweet emotional weight. Hearing those vocals delivered live by the original voice behind them is rare nowadays, and Kygo gave fans something truly special.
Seeing Kygo-who has helped to carry the torch of modern, pop-leaning melodic electronic music-honor Avicii like this just felt right. It didn’t feel like a cheap gimmick; it was a deeply respectful nod from one melodic mastermind to the pioneer who paved the way for him. This is feels like it will be a defining moment that will circulate through everyone’s timelines for a long time.
