The dance music world is waking up to some truly heartbreaking news out of Switzerland this week. What was supposed to be an incredible night of music and connection turned into an absolute nightmare when a shooting broke out at an event in Aarau. As a result, one young woman is dead and five other people are in the hospital. Four men and one other woman, aged 24 to 27, have injuries ranging from “minor to severe.”

The incident went down around 2:30 AM Sunday, August 30th, during the Aarauer Rave. Police confirmed that a 22-year-old woman, Maria Spinelli, lost her life on the scene. Five other ravers were rushed to nearby emergency rooms with gunshot wounds. Right now, Swiss authorities are running a massive manhunt to track down whoever is responsible. As of writing, police haven’t named a suspect, and it’s still completely unclear what triggered the violence. However, officials have arrested a 43-year-old Swiss national as the suspect. Officials are pleading with anyone who was there to come forward. In particular, they want anyone with phone videos or photos from the crowd, to help them piece together what happened.

The crew behind the event shared an emotional message online, saying they are completely “shocked, shaken, and sad” by the senseless violence. They called it a cowardly attack that broke their hearts. The crew reminded everyone of what our scene is supposed to stand for: “A rave should always be a place of joy and love.” Moreover, the organizers have pledged to do everything in their power to support the investigation and help find answers.

News like this cuts deep. For so many of us, the dance floor is more than just a party – it’s a safe space. It’s where we go to leave our worries at the door, connect with friends, lose ourselves in the sound, and feel part of the community that looks out for one another. When real-world violence bleeds into a venue, it shatters that sense of safety in the worst way possible.

Right now, our thoughts, love, and deepest condolences are with the family and friends of the Maria Spinelli whose life was stolen far too soon. We are also thinking of the five attendees fighting to recover. Please hug your rave family a little tighter, look out for the people around you, and hold onto the love that brought us all together in the first place.
