‘Materially generated’ music is set for a tag on Apple Music! The music streaming giant has told its partners that tracks that meet the criterion on AI platforms like Suno will bear a “Made With AI” label on the service. The changes are due to be implemented later this year. The above changes are also subject to record labels and distributors tagging the music with the relevant metadata before it reaches the platform.

The changes were announced on August 20th by Apple to its industry partners. A system that Apple has been running behind the scenes since March is due to be made visible to listeners. It also saw the introduction of what Apple calls AI Transparency Tags. Those tags allowed record labels and distributors to indicate AI use across a track, its composition, its artwork, or a music video. So far, it has been visible only in Apple‘s content delivery feed.

The streaming giant added that creator-input AI Transparency Tags are a mandate in any instance where AI was used to create a material portion of the content. These include tracks that are AI-platform-generated. “We define AI-platform-generated content as anything that is primarily derived from a generative AI service,” the company said. Noted here lies that Apple Music does not distinguish AI content itself for the purpose of the labels. They would instead depend on labels and distributors to declare it. It took the same approach when it launched the tags in March.
