Danny Blu has built a whole world out of dark pop, industrial noise, and unapologetic queerness over the past few years, and ‘Type‘ feels like the moment it all snaps into focus. It’s the first single off his upcoming EP, out July 28th, and it’s easily his most confident-sounding statement yet — which is saying something for an artist whose whole thing is confidence.
The track rides a huge, self-assured bassline and lyrics that are more smirk than sentiment. Blu has described the song as being about power — specifically, knowing how to use “wit, intelligence, and sex” to get exactly what you want. Not a lot of subtext there, and that’s clearly the point.
The upcoming EP pulls in a small army of collaborators — producers Moris Blak and Brand0 among them, vocals handled by Ryan Schumer, mixing by Thomas Warren, mastering by Mike Piacentini — and Blu says the project as a whole is built around rebellion, grief, sex, and reckless abandon, with a visual world steeped in queer mythology and horror imagery. Basically: don’t expect anything to calm down after this single.
Blu’s been earning comparisons to Poppy, Nine Inch Nails, and IAMX for a while now, and “Type” leans into that lineage while still sounding like nobody but him. The video leans into the song’s strut, matching the track’s confidence beat for beat.
“Type” is out July 28th. Blu hits the road shortly after, with dates in Brooklyn (7/30), Philly (7/31), and Richmond (8/1).
