WonkyWilla is bringing his self-styled “Disco Wonk” sound to streaming platforms with a new EP out now. The release marks the first time the producer has translated the concept, previously known through his live sets, into original studio material.
Disco Wonk is the sonic identity WonkyWilla has built his following around, a mashed-together approach that pulls from disco, funk, and bass music without settling neatly into any one lane. It is the kind of tag that only really makes sense once you hear it, and up until now, fans mostly experienced it through his performances rather than on record.
That changes with this EP, adequately titled, Disco Wonk.
Disco Wonk: From Venue To Studio
Comprised of four tracks, namely, ‘Disco Mirage‘, ‘Studio 69‘, ‘Funk Room‘, and ‘Lovin’ You‘, the project takes the wonky, groove-heavy elements that have defined his live shows and reworks them into a proper studio release, giving fans something to stream and revisit outside of a festival set or club night.
The focus track, ‘Lovin’ You,’ leans into the disco-meets-bass hybrid that’s become his signature, built around a groove-forward bassline and vocal hooks that nod to classic disco while still hitting like a bass record. It’s a fair introduction to what Disco Wonk actually sounds like on wax, for anyone who’s only caught the concept live.
WonkyWilla has spent the last few years building a reputation on the strength of his sets rather than a deep back catalog, which makes this EP something of a turning point. Producers who lean heavily on their live show sometimes struggle to capture that same energy in a studio format, and this release is essentially a test of whether the Disco Wonk sound translates once you take away the crowd.
