HBO Releases Trailer for Upcoming Burning Man Documentary Series

HBO and the organizers of the famous Burning Man festival in the Nevada desert have announced a new four-part documentary series titled The Man Will Burn. Set to premiere on July 9th on Max, the series offers an intimate, behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to run the massive cultural gathering that rises from the desert sands every year.

The real-world event takes place from August 30th to September 7th, attracting tens of thousands of people to Black Rock City, Nevada. Airing new episodes every Thursday, the four-part docuseries will explore everything from the event’s complex organization and the impact of COVID-19 to the dedicated staff, volunteers, and participants who make the gathering possible.

Directed by Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Jehane Noujaim and Vikram Gandhi, The Man Will Burn highlights one of the world’s most ambitious cultural experiments. In this unique community, attendees gather to build massive, awe-inspiring art installations that serve as the backdrop for various musical events. The centerpiece of the entire gathering is “The Man”—a giant wooden structure whose torching culminates in a spectacular display of fire, music, and fireworks.

While celebrated by many, the festival has also frequently made headlines. Recent incidents range from a homicide at a previous event to a unique situation in 2025 where a baby was born to a mother who didn’t realize she was pregnant. Furthermore, in 2023, unprecedented heavy rainfall caused severe flooding and deep mud, leaving thousands of attendees stranded. The extreme weather conditions—which also routinely include intense sandstorms—even led to a medical emergency when an attendee was electrocuted during the flooding.

Despite these challenges, the gathering remains deeply meaningful to its participants, who view it as a healing community and a foundational way of life. It is a space designed for radical self-expression where people can truly be themselves. Notably, Burning Man features no official festival lineup or set schedule, yet it consistently attracts top DJs who perform surprise unannounced sets throughout the week.

The documentary kicks off on July 9 on HBO.
