What began as a potential disaster turned into a remarkable display of resilience and improvisation. After a fire destroyed the original mainstage just two days before the start of Tomorrowland 2025, organizers managed to rebuild the stage using parts borrowed from Metallica’s touring rig. Now, they’ve confirmed that the same setup will remain in place for Weekend Two.
The blaze, which broke out days before the festival opened its gates, left the iconic Tomorrowland mainstage in ruins. With little time to spare, the production team rallied to construct an emergency replacement. Thanks to a last-minute collaboration with Metallica, and an extraordinary logistical effort, the festival was able to open on time.
“It is a miracle and we are beyond happy to be opening,” Tomorrowland spokesperson Debby Wilmsen said during a press conference last weekend.
Ahead of the second weekend, Wilmsen spoke with VRT News to share more about the decision to keep the new mainstage largely unchanged.
“Normally, there’s a lot of spectacle with fireworks, fountains, lighting, and so on,” she said. “This time, the DJ was the star. I can imagine the DJs loved feeling that energy and love up close. Will we incorporate that into our design for next year? I’ll leave that up to the creative director and his team.”
While some small enhancements are planned—such as added visuals or stage props depending on the artist—festivalgoers can expect the main structure to look essentially the same as it did during Weekend One.
Highlights from Weekend One
Despite the unexpected turn of events, Tomorrowland delivered a powerful first weekend. Some standout moments included:
- Charlotte de Witte both opening and closing the festival on the same day
- An immersive tribute experience honoring Avicii
- Alan Walker inviting Darude on stage for a special live moment
- A generally more intimate energy created by the stripped-back stage setup
A Stage Born from Crisis
Tomorrowland has long been known for its elaborate stage designs and immersive set pieces. But this year, the stripped-down mainstage unintentionally created a different kind of magic, bringing focus back to the artists and their connection with the crowd.
