In the early hours of April 8, 2025, tragedy struck Santo Domingo. The deadly roof collapse of the iconic Jet Set nightclub occurred during a lively merengue event. Initially, authorities reported 98 deaths. Tragically, this number has climbed to 184 as rescue efforts continue to search for all unaccounted attendees. Hundreds more sustained injuries, sending families and the entire nation into mourning.  Â
The nightclub, located in Santo Domingo, had been a go-to spot in the city for nearly five decades. Known for its Monday night parties, Jet Set was considered the most popular venue of its kind in the Dominican Republic. The club hosted a concert headlined by renowned Dominican singer Rubby Pérez when the roof collapsed. This unfortunate event claimed him as one of its victims.
Race Against Time: The Frantic Search for Survivors
Following the tragedy, calls from people trapped under the rubble rang on emergency services. Volunteers searched for survivors amidst the debris. The sheer scale of the devastation created a challenging environment for rescuers. Rescuers are still working tirelessly to locate and extract those trapped under the collapsed roof. The initial hours were critical. Teams raced against time to find and assist victims.
Reports from survivors paint a disturbing picture. Moments before the roof gave way, dust began to fall like rain, settling into the drinks of unsuspecting revelers. Some mistook the dust for evidence of an earthquake and dismissed it as a minor tremor. One survivor even recalled a stone falling and cracking a table. This event prompted a few nearby patrons to leave the club.
Perhaps the most chilling detail comes from video footage of the deadly roof collapse. Miraculously, rescuers pulled some survivors alive from the debris after nearly twelve agonizing hours. A poignant recording captured a woman as she cried desperately: “Dad, what’s happened to you?”. The video ended abruptly, starkly reminding viewers of the tragedy’s immediate and personal impact. In the recording, a concertgoer points toward the roof and utters the fateful words: “Something fell from the ceiling.” This graphic confirmation verifies other testimonies. Sections of the roof visibly detached just seconds before the entire structure collapsed. Survivors consistently reported that the collapse felt sudden and offered little warning.
In the immediate aftermath, the scene was one of unimaginable devastation. Adding to the horrific accounts, Rubby Pérez, who was performing at the time of the collapse, began singing to help rescue teams pinpoint his location within the wreckage.
Deadly Roof Collapse: Investigation Underway
The ongoing efforts have now transitioned into the recovery of bodies. Among the victims were notable figures, including the governor of Montecristi, Nelsy Cruz, and former MLB players Octavio Dotel and Tony Enrique Blanco Cabrera. The loss of these well-known figures spotlights the impact of the tragedy. President Luis Abinader declared three days of national mourning, reflecting the profound grief felt across the country.
The investigation into the cause of the deadly roof collapse is ongoing. People have raised questions about building safety regulations and the last inspection of the 50-year-old venue, as a fire damaged the building in 2023.The owner of the Jet Set nightclub expressed his profound sorrow, stating the incident was “devastating and that words could not adequately convey the pain caused by the tragedy”.
Jet Set’s legacy will no longer be marked not only by its cultural influence but also by its deep and painful loss. In response to the tragedy, international aid has begun pouring in. Neighboring countries including Haiti, Puerto Rico, and Cuba have sent emergency medical teams and supplies, while the United States and Spain have pledged financial assistance and structural engineers to support the ongoing rescue and recovery efforts. Global relief organizations are also mobilizing to offer psychological support to victims’ families and survivors. The overwhelming show of solidarity has brought a glimmer of hope amid heartbreak, reminding the Dominican Republic that, even in its dimmest hour, it does not stand alone.
