Defected Announces New Label, “One People”

Defected just launched its new Afrocentric label One People. This comes with a first release ‘Peperuke’ featuring Nes Mburu, from Parisian maestro Alex Wann.

The latest imprint from the global dance institution Defected, One People emerges with a clear vision – to orchestrate a sonic celebration of Afrocentric music from a diverse and international roster of artists. Weaving together the sounds of Afro House, Afro Tech, and Melodic House, the label calls on talent from all corners of the globe to honor the continent’s rhythmic magic.

Setting the tone for the label, its debut release out on Friday, 23rd February, by Alex Wann represents One People’s touch. The track earned nods of acclaim from discerning tastemakers, including superstar Kelis and the revered Keinemusik. Championing artists from across the Afro-electronic spectrum, the label’s ever-growing release schedule will feature some of the scene’s brightest stars. The list includes AMÉMÉ, Flush, Da Africa Deep, Fka Mash, Biishop, Melé and more.

Led by Defected’s Director of A&R and Stay True Sounds head Allan Nicoll, his unique insight and extensive knowledge drawn from his experience at the helm of South Africa’s influential music scene will undoubtedly shape the label’s identity.

Over the course of my two decades in the industry, Afro house has consistently held a prominent position within the musical landscape“, says Nicoll. “From my tenure at Soul Candi to nurturing emerging talent on my independent label, Stay True Sounds, I’ve played a proactive role in shaping the genre’s future“.

“The opportunity to establish a label in collaboration with Defected has allowed for an even broader global platform and through One People. I am excited to present the rich and dynamic offerings of the genre to audiences worldwide.”
