Claptone Hits Corona Electric Beach: Exclusive Interview

Hailing from Berlin, Germany, the masked DJ known only as Claptone is set to headline the first edition of Corona Electric Beach in 2018. This 21+ event on January 13th in Ft. Lauderdale, FL is free to attend if you RSVP online ahead of time.

Corona’s traveling event series brings “beats to the beach” with some of the biggest names in dance music, and they are kicking off a new year with the top ranked house DJ in the DJ Mag Top 100 DJs poll. EDMTunes got an exclusive interview with the mysterious entertainer who talked about what house music means to him, his incredibly busy tour schedule, and surprises for his Corona Electric Beach performance, including tracks from a new album.

Claptone Corona Electric Beach Interview

The name Claptone has become synonymous with white gloves, a top hat and of course the intriguing golden mask. Could you explain the significance behind the mask and what it means to you?

Claptone: I do hope that my fans and friends around the globe use their ears more-so than their sense of sight. Believe it or not, I am a musician and not a swimwear model.
House music is a very spiritual thing for people all over the world. It means different things to different people. You’ve been voted the highest House artist on the 2017 DJ Mag Top 100 DJs Poll at # 69 AND you have won the Ibiza DJ Award for House music the last three years in a row! What does House music mean to you?
Trends in music come and go year after year, but somehow, house music keeps on kicking. Twisting, turning, rebirthing and readjusting, it continuously takes on new forms and styles, while retaining the groove that seems to be eternal. Virtuosity and theory take a back seat to emotion and feeling – unbridled creativity. Incredible things seems to happen when a bass drum meets a baseline. How I love it dearly. But then again I love music as a whole.
Jazz is also a very spiritual musical style. Your remix of Gregory Porter’s ‘Liquid Spirit’ is credited for the commercial success of Porter’s album.  What connections do you see between Jazz and House music and how does it feel to know your work supported Gregory Porter and his success?

In the studio and in my DJ sets, I look to create a melting kaleidoscope of influences and styles. I am of the opinion that good music is good music, regardless of what genre that others place it in. In my remix work I connected with acts as diverse as Pet Shop Boys, Gorillaz, Gregory Proter, Faithless and The Wombats to name just a few. I dare to say I am responsible for all their worldwide success, or am I?

You must be one of the most booked artists in the world right now. Your tour schedule is INSANE! You have 5 shows in the last 2 days of the year, and they are all over the world! You’ll be traveling from the U.S. to Germany to Indonesia, back to the U.S. and finally to Colombia. How do you keep up your energy and stamina? A secret Claptone workout routine and diet?

Growing up, my mother told me that if you love your job, you will never work a day in your life. It turns out that she was correct. Mindmelt, timetravel, private jets and champagne help as well.

On January 13th you’ll be in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida for Corona Electric Beach at America’s Backyard. CEB has hosted names like Felix Da Housecat, Chocolate Puma and Shiba San. How do you feel to be chosen to headline their first event of 2018? Without giving too much away, what can we expect from your set at Corona Electric Beach? Any new collabs or remixes in the work that might be finished by the new year?

2017 was a year that I will not soon forget, however I am incredibly excited to jump into 2018 with even more energy. Truth be told, I have a special place in my heart for Florida. Lovely people, perfect weather and vibrant sunsets that seem to last forever. This coming year will bring a new Album from yours truly, many songs and tracks, some of which I will test out at Corona Electric Beach.

Everyone knows you’re a House music producer out of Berlin, but that’s about all we know. Wouldn’t it be a great New Years surprise for your fans to reveal your identity in this interview? 😉

They call me CLAPTONE.

If you’re in the Ft. Lauderdale area, don’t forget to RSVP to this free show! Start your new year off right with Claptone at Corona Electric Beach on January 13th. The event runs from 2-8 PM at America’s Backyard.
