Awesome Alert! New Acoustic Instrument ‘Yaybahar’ Mimics a Digital Synthesizer

What is a Yaybahar, you ask? Although it may look like a rudimentary slingshot device, the Yaybahar is actually a purely acoustic sting instrument that mimics the sounds of a digital synthesizer. In the video shown above, the mastermind behind the revolutionary instrument, Görkem Şen, generates sound by stroking and striking the horizontally-oriented cords with a mallet, while drawing a bow-like object along the vertical strings. He also beats the circular-objects at the base of the instrument, generating an echoing rhythm. Şen describes the origin of the sound as a new marriage between string and resonant body:

The vibrations from the strings are transmitted via the coiled springs to the frame drums. These vibrations are turned into sound by the membranes which echo back and forth on the coiled springs. This results in an unique listening experience with an hypnotic surround sound.

The sound that is produced by the Yaybahar does not only sound surreal, but is also extremely hypnotic. I could totally see myself kicking back and letting the unique vibes drown out all of life’s noise. Check out this amazing new gizmo, and as always let us know what you think of the Yaybahar!
