After much buzz and media attention, viewers were left disappointed when Daft Punk did not show up for their scheduled appearance on last night’s Colbert Report. Stephen Colbert offered this explanation,
“Here’s the story: it’s a true story. We booked click and clack over here about a month ago. This network is owned by Viacom, which is also the owner of MTV… Apparently, Daft Punk are going to make a surprise appearance on the MTV Video Music Awards. Don’t tell anyone, because fun fact: no one told me until two hours ago.”
Basically, based on this reasoning, we are expected to believe that the multi billion dollar company Viacom had buried their heads in the sand for the last two weeks and did not know that Colbert had scheduled the French superstars. They simply woke up today and read one of the thousands of articles related to the upcoming appearance that have been published in the last few weeks and came to the realization that it would not work to do a contractual agreement with MTV. Instead of watching 30 minutes of a comedy central show to see the legends perform, fans who wanted to catch Daft Punk last night will have to wait three weeks and see them on the MTV Music Awards at the end of August.
Although obviously bummed, Colbert shrugged off the confusion while dancing to Daft Punk’s Get Lucky with the star-studded cast of celebrities including Jimmy Fallon, Henry Kissinger, Jeff Daniels, and the cast of Breaking Bad (yay the season continues this Sunday guys!!!) that showed up tonight in anticipation of the dance music legends. The night did not quite end in disappointment, fortunately, when Robin Thicke performed his summer smash hit, “Blurred Lines”. It might not be a bad thing after all now that we’re forced to watch the VMAs… who knows, we might get to see Kanye interrupt another award speech; or Miley Cyrus singing twerking.
