The UK could soon see its nightlife scene roar back to life, as Prime Minister Keir Starmer unveils plans to let pubs, clubs, and music venues stay open later and cut through years of red tape. The proposal aims to modernize outdated licensing laws — scrapping requirements such as newspaper ads for license changes, easing outdoor trading restrictions, and providing venues with more flexibility for live events and pop-ups. It’s all part of a wider push to revive the country’s struggling night-time economy and bring back the communal energy that’s been fading from British nightlife.

Starmer framed the move as a cultural and economic reset, calling pubs and venues “the beating heart of our communities.” For the dance music world, this could open doors — literally — to longer sets, extended hours, and a rebirth of underground events that strict regulations have stifled. Think fewer 11 p.m. shutdowns, more sunrise sets.

But not everyone’s sold. Critics warn that later openings could strain emergency services, heighten alcohol-related harm, and disrupt local communities. Some venue owners argue the move won’t fix deeper issues like inflation, staffing shortages, or shifting drinking habits. Still, for nightlife lovers and promoters across the UK, this proposal feels like the most hopeful sign in years. This is a chance for the country’s legendary party culture to reclaim its after-hours edge.

Read more about the new initiative, Cheers to Change. Tehir’s review will begin with a “four-week blitz” asking for landlords’ and communities’ thoughts on local nightlife, with plans to use that evidence to help bolster local businesses.

A new study from the Royal National Institute for Deaf People (RNID) has found that 58% of Gen Z have experienced issues with their hearing due to loud music. The research, which surveyed roughly 2,000 individuals in the UK between the ages of 18 and 28, found that while 75% of respondents understood the risks of permanent hearing damage from noise in nightclubs or at music festivals, a significant number still do not take precautions.

Despite their awareness, 35% of Gen Z members reported that they do not plan to wear any form of hearing protection at events. This finding is particularly striking when contrasted with the high percentage of people who have already experienced hearing damage. The survey also explored what might motivate people to use earplugs more often. Roughly 28% said they would be more inclined to use earplugs if they could still enjoy live music while wearing them, and another one-in-five said they would opt for protection if it were offered for free at events and felt more comfortable.

Franki Oliver, the RNID’s Audiology Manager, commented on the survey’s findings, saying, “These findings highlight just how often people are experiencing the dangerous side effects of being exposed to loud music, despite people’s apparent high awareness of the risks”. Oliver emphasized that this is a preventable problem, adding, “Exposure to loud sound levels is one of the leading causes of hearing loss and tinnitus – but it’s also one of the most preventable – so it’s encouraging to see that more people would be willing to take steps to protect their hearing if they knew they’d still enjoy the full live music experience”. The results underscore the critical need for better access to and promotion of comfortable, effective hearing protection for young adults.

This summer, a brand new chapter in London’s cultural and musical legacy begins — Silverworks Island opens its gates in just one month, promising an unforgettable fusion of sound, style, and industrial grit. Nestled in the heart of East London’s Royal Docks, this open-air venue is set to become the capital’s newest home for genre-spanning electronic music festivals, brought to life by the creative minds at Broadwick Live.

A 35-year-old man named Kristopher Purvis thought he was being slick by dressing up as a tourist returning home from Mexico, landing at Edinburgh Airport. He and a companion only had a black suitcase and a plastic bag filled with novelty sombreros. Everything seemed to be going smoothly for Purvis till they went through the nothing-to-declare section at Customs & Border Protection, the National Crime Agency reported.

As Purvis was passing through, he was stopped by Border Force officers. He told them all he had on him were these sombreros. The officers didn’t believe it and continued their investigation with Purvis. While searching the suitcase, 48 kilos of cocaine were discovered. That’s £5.64 million at street value.

On March 4th, Purvis appeared at the Edinburgh High Court and pleaded guilty to importing Class A drugs. He was sentenced on April 16th at the same court to 10 years in prison.

Detective Chief Inspector Laura Sands, Police Scotland, said: “This conviction and sentencing serves as yet another example of our ongoing commitment to target the supply and distribution of controlled drugs across Scotland, which remains an absolute priority for the Organised Crime Partnership and its partners.

“This intervention and subsequent detection disrupted an attempt to bring a significant volume of class A controlled drugs into the country.”

“I would like to take this opportunity to remind the public that information from our local communities is an essential part of our investigations, as we work to disrupt the drugs trade and work with our partners to bring those responsible to justice.”

In a shocking turn of events, local residents of South Gloucestershire have blocked a psytrance festival that was set to happen in September due to residential complaints.

The local council made this decision on April 8th. The council informed the organizers of Goa Cream of their decision. Goa Cream is currently scheduled from September 12th to 14th, for the third year in a row. Environmental health officer Florence Fisher expressed that there were 11 complaints from locals last year about the festival.

One resident described the event as “non-stop heavy bass music; it was almost inhumane and a form of torture“. Another resident claimed the extremely loud noise had a “profound effect” on him and his family. With other complaints expressed it gave them a headache all weekend, and others stated the music made their houses and windows shake.

On Monday, April 14th, Piers Chapora, the festival’s organizer, wrote on Facebook post that they are currently looking into alternative sites.

“Hi friends, Goa Cream is NOT cancelled !! For all of you freaks looking forward to being tortured at Yewtree farm in September. I’m afraid South Gloucester Council have objected to our licence application, the long and short of it, “Yewtree farm is an unsuitable venue for music/dance festivals? All this means is, we are now looking for another venue for this September’s party. I am going to see other possible sites later this week, so fingers crossed. Just putting it out there, if you know of a suitable venue with like-minded land owners, please let us know. One World, One Love, One Dancefloor.“

Multiple videos showed the moment of the break-in, with over 100 people making their way into the Ministry of Sound with bolt cutters, through the women’s bathroom. Furthermore, they spray-painted the mirrors and brought out confetti cannons, throwing an illegal party. Then, videos showed security chasing the offenders out of the premises.

The statement also explained there was major damage done, as well as high-value equipment stolen. Nevertheless, the company implemented stronger security measures for the rest of its schedule.

Glastonbury, one of the world’s most-famous contemporary arts festivals, reported profits up to $7.3 million (or £5.9 million) in 2024. According to an article from DJ Mag, the festival’s profits for 2024 surpassed 2023’s profits, which were $3.6 million (or £2.9 million). One of the U.K.’s well-renowned newspapers, The Evening Standard, stated that the profits were from Companies House accounts that Glastonbury filed for the 2023-2024 tax year ending in May 2024. The $7.3 million/£5.9 million that Glastonbury gained were pre-tax profits. Later, the festival then donated $6.4 million/£5.2 million to charities such as Oxfam, Greenpeace, and WaterAid. The festival’s overall revenue for the whole year of 2024 was $84.9 million (or £68.4 million), an increase of 20% from 2023.

Criticism of the festival and upcoming goals in the next couple years

The revelation of the profits that Glastonbury gained in 2024 comes after the legendary singer-songwriter Neil Young announced that he and his band decided to pull out of the 2025 edition’s lineup. Young mentioned the reason for the pullout was that him and his band had the festival organizers telling them to “do a lot of things” they did not have any interest in doing. The artist also said, “We will not be playing Glastonbury on this tour because it is a corporate turn-off, and not for me like it used to be.”

One drawback from the 2024 edition that affirmed Young’s statement was that the smaller stages drew a lot of criticisms from fans for attracting overcrowdness. To address the issue (and other issues that affected last year’s edition), Glastonbury co-creator Michael Eavis said that the festival will undergo a “fallow year” in 2026, which is to allow the farmland on the festival grounds to recover. This makes sense since the festival organizers just purchased more land last June by spending $4.5 million (or £3.7 million). The steps that Glastonbury is taking may possibly ensure that the festival will see more profit increases as a result of these very significant additions to the festival experience for many of the attendees who plan on attending in the next couple years.

This has enabled us to continue to rebuild the event’s vital financial reserves, while also allowing us to continue to support good causes and charities.”

Economic Struggles and a “Devastating Period”

AIF CEO John Rostron described 2024 as a “devastating period” for the festival industry, citing sustained economic challenges from the pandemic, high inflation, and shifting consumer trends as key culprits.

Earlier this year, the AIF raised alarms about the precarious state of the sector. By March, 21 festivals—including Standon Calling, Neighbourhood Weekender, Doune The Rabbit Hole, and Tokyo World—had already pulled the plug on their plans. Long-standing events such as Nozstock The Hidden Valley also announced that 2024 would mark their final year.

By mid-year, the tally had climbed to 40, with cancellations affecting dance-centric events like El Dorado, Riverside, and NASS. More recently, Hampshire’s Cosmic Roots, Kent’s Alfresco, and others like Camp Bestival Shropshire and Highest Point have joined the growing list of casualties.

The Call for Government Intervention

The AIF has repeatedly called for targeted governmental support, including a reduction in VAT on ticket sales from 20% to 5%. Rostron emphasized the significant economic contribution of festivals to local communities and the UK Treasury, lamenting the lack of governmental action to preserve these cultural mainstays.

We have campaigned tirelessly for targeted, temporary government intervention which, evidence shows, would have saved most of the independent events that have fallen in 2024

While the UK Government recently introduced a voluntary levy on arena concert ticket sales to support grassroots music venues, the implementation details remain unclear. The AIF argues that such measures are insufficient to address the scale of the crisis.

An Industry in Flux

The current state of the UK festival sector is a stark reminder of its vulnerability amidst broader economic uncertainties. As organizers, artists, and fans grapple with these changes, the hope remains that swift and effective interventions can prevent further losses in the years to come.

For now, the UK festival calendar faces an uphill battle, and many are left wondering how many events will be able to weather the storm and return in 2025.

*Featured Cover Photo Credit: Mina Kim/PA (PA Wire)

The U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer has officially provided his backing for Parliament plans to make spiking a criminal offense nationwide. The PM’s backing comes after the Labour Government made spiking a criminal offense as a form of assault under the “Offences Against the Person Act” on July 17th. The criminal offense, which Parliament included it in the 35 proposed bills, also got its introduction during the King’s Speech that occurred on that same date as well.

Other nightlife leaders and industry executives have shown support and praise for the planned passing of the criminal offense, especially since there will be staff training on how to prevent spiking from happening at the venues. That training may roll out starting in spring 2025. An official press release from the UK GOV earlier today affirmed the pledge from PM Keir Starmer, alongside a joint coalition of industry executives, police chiefs, and transport heads, to keep women and girls safe at night by strongly cracking down on spiking. The Prime Minister would later confirmed those initial plans in a meeting with the aforementioned executives, chiefs, and heads on the same day.

Training throughout the UK on how to prevent spiking in all venues

According to an article from Mixmag, the crackdown on spiking will involve widespread training across the nightlife industry. This nationwide training process will utilize the extensive and valuable training of skills to thousands of staffers in noticing the offense right away and preventing it quickly before the victim falls for the crime. A pilot program will commence the plans starting from December.

Afterwards, the training will start its rollout process towards up to 10,000 nightlife workers in spring next year. This is a great step in ensuring a fun and safe nightlife environment and with spiking being made into a criminal offense, it may influence various governments worldwide to enact similar policies relating to that as well. The state of California has even mandated bars and nightclubs to provide drug testing devices for patrons starting this past July. Last but not least, this will show offenders that spiking is a very serious crime and they will face very severe consequences if they receive charges for it. Here is a post on X (formerly Twitter) from Prime Minister Keir Starker that emphasizes the government’s commitment to cracking down on spiking.

‘Dirty Cash (Money Talks)’

The lyrics of the track influence the pace and tone. Lots of attitude and hustler-esque rhymes give us absolute mayhem on the dancefloor. The female vocals breathe life into the groovy basslines, that have our hips rocking in every single direction. After a rap break from Adventures of Stevie V, now we are inspired to go get our dirty money. The UK producer and Solid Grooves co-lead brings out the funk from the original version and mixes it with his Tech-House expertise.

The track has already claimed its reward within release weekend. Stations such as Radio 1 Dance, KISSFM UK, and Capital Dance have supported the track on their program. Moreover, the song is currently sitting at Number 1 on Beatport, gracing over Odd Mobs remix of Summit’s ‘palm of my hands’. Furthermore, the track has collected over 1 million streams on spotify on release weekend alone.

Adventures of Stevie V is claiming its return to the spotlight while bringing back ‘Dirty Cash (Money Talks)’, while being introduced to a newer generation of music lovers, with PAWSA at the forefront.

PAWSA

The UK House producer reigns supreme with his flavors and textures. Each track takes us on a groovy journey from beginnig to the end. PAWSA enjoyes the support from peers such as Marco Carola, Nicole Moudaber, Michael Bibi, and Damien Lazarus. You can find me playing sunrise sets all over the world, and one dancefloors curated by Circoloco, Club Space, or his imprint Solid Grooves, which he founded alongside Bibi.

This song makes us want to dance and then work on our 401ks and side hustles after the club. Here is ‘Dirty Cash (Money Talks)’:
