Anthony ‘Vengevnce’ Toro is a promising Dubstep DJ/producer from Tampa, who also produces House music. Only 30 years old, Vengevnce has already provided support for the likes of Bonnie X Clyde, Blunts & Blondes, Codd Dubz, and MVRDA to name a few. His name continues to rise in the EDM scene of Florida and of the Atlantic Southeast in general. Some of the most prominent music venues and clubs in Florida he has performed at include The Ritz, TK Lounge, Myth Nightclub, and The Orpheum. Anthony ‘Vengevnce’ Toro Is Making His Presence Known At Events

Earlier this past weekend, Vengevnce got to perform at Florida Cannabis Festival in Mount Dor. Over 20,000 people attended this colorful festival that celebrated good vibes with gnarly, awesome music. Later, on November 14, two days after the last day of EDC Orlando, he will also be at that same city as he will perform a set at Optiview 360.

Optiview 360 is a multipurpose venue that features a museum, a modern lounge, content creation sets, and social events. One of those unique events will be Vengevnce’s set on November 14 and it is a must-see event for those who love House and Dubstep at the same time. Sunset Music Festival will also take place over Memorial Day weekend, on May 27th-May 29th at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, FL. Before attending this year’s event, I had the chance to attend the event in 2016 as a fan. Looking back at this experience, I knew that Disco Donnie would not disappoint in bringing attendees a memorable experience, especially after its unfortunate absence since the start of the pandemic. The festival giants certainly brought a great production to Tampa, especially since it is the first of many Florida events set to take place this year.

When entering the venue, attendees are greeted with various Instagram-worthy art installations, ranging from caterpillars, hanging umbrellas, colorful resting tents, and more. At first glance, many can see fans enjoyed the experience of hanging out with the massive caterpillars and laying out under the shade of the large tents.

If fans were not dancing the day away, taking pictures, or resting under the tents, they were getting a bite to eat at some of the event’s food vendors or shopping for cute one-of-a-kind clothing and pashminas. Festival-goers had the opportunity to purchase their new rave gear, including hand fans, shirts, accessories, and eyewear. Afterward, they can purchase unique meals at local food trucks, such as the Jamaican-Caribbean food cart.

Stages and Lineup

Fans had the choice to visit one of three stages, The Sunset Main Stage, the Horizon Stage, and the Eclipse Stage. Each concert platform centered around different forms of dance music. As many can expect, the main stage focused on some of the world’s top music artists, ranging from Seven Lions, Said The Sky, SLANDER, Troyboi, and more. The Eclipse Stage held performances by well-known and upcoming bass artists, including Sullivan King, Kai Wachi, INZO, and 12th Planet. Ultimately, the Horizon Stage served as the place to relax and vibe to the sweet sounds of techno and tech-house. Artists such as Drezo and Green Velvet dominated this particular stage with epic performances featuring some of their greatest hit singles.

For those who had the chance to attend the event, we can all agree the lineup was unlike any other. Although throughout the 2020 year, the performance list didn’t change extensively, this was a lineup that didn’t need altering. Disco Donnie curated an overall bass lineup including A-list music producers such as Adventure Club, Destructo, Kompany, Malaa, Midnight Tyrannosaurus, and NGHTMRE.

The Experience

During Day 1, you can feel the energy come alive as this event was the first for many after the COVID-19 pandemic. Although festival gathering was normal prior to the pandemic, some attendees were nervous about gathering in such a large crowd, despite being vaccinated. However, Disco Donnie set up hand sanitizer stations and encouraged fans to wear a mask, especially if not vaccinated. In addition, they introduced a vaccination site for those who have been unable to get access to the vaccine. With these safety precautions. attendees were free to go maskless once again and enjoy the good energy radiating off the festival-goers in the crowd. For once after this long year, we all felt the sense of community many of us have been longing for during our time in isolation.

Day 2 was just as extraordinary as the first. However, you can tell attendees were much more comfortable gathering around and enjoying each other’s company. Honestly, the Day 1 artists lineup was better in comparison to the second, but this did not make the event any less fun. One of the most memorable performances was undoubtedly SLANDER. The duo performed some of their latest releases for the first time, such as “Back To U,” “Better Than Heaven,” “When I’m With You,” and “Hurt Sometimes.” Ultimately, this was an emotional set where fans couldn’t stop themselves from sharing a tear or two.

Some highlights of this year’s event include SLANDER’s unexpected announcement of their own music festival, happening this October in North Carolina. Fans can expect further details within the next coming months. In addition, artists such as Sullivan King and Seven Lions debuted future collaborations expected to release in the next few months.

Sunset Music Festival: A Must Attend

Sunset Music Festival delivered the ultimate experience for fans withdrawing from festival normalcy. Attending the festival for the second time reminds me why this music event is one of the best in the state of Florida. Disco Donnie does not fail to give attendees their dose of fun, excitement, entertainment, and tranquility. For many, music festivals are a place to unwind, bond with old and new friends alike, and to relieve the stresses brought about from their daily lives. Sunset Music Festival did not fail to deliver this once-in-a-lifetime experience. We can’t wait to see what more is in store from this incredible music festival.

Future attendees have been curious as to whether the Tampa music festival will be able to take place this summer. It seemed as if its arrival would never come, especially when the festival was moved several times. However, the Sunset Team will be making its return this year official.

According to the statement, organizers will work with the Tampa Sports Authority, the local government, and the health community to ensure the festival takes place safely. They state,

“Sunset has always strived to create safe (and amazing) spaces for us to be together – and we’re working to do the same now.”

Organizers announced the change on Friday along with the festival’s new name, Sunset 2.0: The Gift Edition. 

“We knew it was a longshot AND we really wanted us all to be together—but the window has closed on the ability to put on a safe festival on the Fourth of July weekend,” the Sunset organizers said in a statement. The organizers, which include Disco Donnie and Sunset Events, stated they “looked at all options” before offering fans “a special edition of Sunset during the holidays.”

“We acknowledge this is not what any of us wants to hear, but we need to take all necessary precautions under these unprecedented times,” the Sunset team stated. “We love you and we cannot wait to get back to the party, in a safe environment along with the quality of operations and production that you come to expect from us.” 

With so many spring and summer music festivals canceling their 2020 editions and punting to 2021, the Sunset team’s efforts for December are appreciated by dance music fans. However, December isn’t guaranteed safe ground. Some public health experts are bracing for a possible second coronavirus wave in the fall. But if December pans out for Sunset, attendees may enjoy temperatures of around 75 degrees, versus 90 degrees in July. 

Sunset 2.0 Lineup

DJs originally booked for Sunset 2.0 included Alison Wonderland, Chris Lake, Dog Blood (Skrillex and Boys Noize), Kaskade, Illenium, Fisher, Zedd, and Zeds Dead. Regarding whether the artists will remain the same, the festival’s frequently asked questions section states they are “working to develop the lineup, which will be announced when the global situation becomes more stable.”

Already purchased tickets will be automatically transferred to the December event. They’ll also include a $25 food and beverage credit, $25 merchandise credit, and first dibs at 2021 tickets at the lowest price. Ticket buyers who desire refunds can fill out a request form by November 22. Organizers say the lineup will be released before the final day for refunds. Disco Donnie tweeted that refunds will be available “until the day the wristbands ship for the new date.”

Single-day tickets are expected to go on sale when the artists schedule by day and set times are released.

In years past, the two-day festival has drawn more than 50,000 people to Raymond James Stadium. The festival features a sunset-shaped main stage. In 2018, the festival expanded from three to five stages.

Returning To Normal

Some restaurants, stores, and beaches in Tampa Bay began reopening in early May. Central Florida’s first rave since the lockdown, Carnage’s ROAD RAVE drive-in concert, is scheduled for June 6 in Orlando.

Regular raves are in the works in other states. Dancefestopia is moving forward for September 10 to 13 in Kansas City. Imagine Music Festival is planned for September 18 to 20 in Atlanta. Ultra Music Festival in Miami was the first casualty of the pandemic in March, and is not returning until 2021. Time will tell if the third time’s the charm for Sunset Music Festival.

It was hot. 90 degrees sizzled that Saturday at the Raymond James Stadium. I could feel my sweat and the dust clotting against my skin, black streaks running down my legs. But it didn’t matter. You know that’s a part of the experience, especially in a place like Tampa. Outside, I waited in a herd of neon, girls in fishnets and dudes in ironic tees towering over me. Destructo had just started playing, so I pushed my way forward because I was alone and small and wanted to get in already.

It wasn’t the most of beautiful festival grounds— mostly sand and patched grass— but the vibe more than made up for it. Most of the security guards greeted you with a smile and the bartenders danced while they opened your beer. If you had the official app then you received notifications about schedule changes, reminders to drink water or to help someone who looks like they’re in trouble. All of this set the precedent that though this festival wasn’t as big as Ultra or EDC, it had its own charm. It was intimate.

The Stages

Sunset stage was the main stage, where headliners Zedd and Dog Blood concluded the nights. If you were close to the front you could see the dancers and brightly colored entertainers spinning in the air or blowing you kisses. The pyrotechnics exploded without fail during the intensive moments for each artists’ set. In the back, there was a red geometric tent, one auburn panel layered over another. They left the perfect amount of space between the stage and the dancefloor for those who needed to chill out without sacrificing the music.

The Eclipse stage was taken over by DeadBeats and featured artists like Gammer, Flux Pavillion, Rusko, and Zeds Dead. This was the place to break your neck and that is probably the only description you need for now. Really, it was wild. Read more about their performances below.

Horizon stage was parallel to Eclipse, which made it friendly to navigate the grounds, especially toward the night. I’m not the best with directions, much less when it’s dark and I’ve had after a few drinks so I really appreciated that. I found myself always coming back to the Horizon stage. Anjunabeats was the host for the weekend, which made it a safe haven for me— the place to rest after moshing and headbanging.

Not a Stage but Still Noteworthy

Overall, the gem of the festival was the Sunset Chill House tent. It was completely enclosed, AC blasting at all times. They had a Red Bull-sponsored bar inside, a sweet deck set up, and, most importantly, the tunes. You went inside to escape the sun, but what you found was a dance oasis. I recommend checking out Seventeen Dream and Valentina Schwartz. They created infectious fun energy on the dancefloor. If you entered the tent alone, you walked out with friends. At the end of the day, isn’t that what festivals are all about?

SMF Chill House Tent

Day 1 Vibes

It began with Destructo. He had attracted a large crowd despite the high heat at five in the afternoon. You could tell how loved he was by the way the crowd roared when he started. He set the mood for the rest of the evening: f*ck negativity, just dance. After a while, we DID need a break from dancing. The organizers made it easy to refill your water by setting up stations all around the grounds. They had volunteers refilling your water for you, which was such a smart move. The line moved quicker so you wouldn’t be fumbling with your bottle or Camelpak. It’s the little things guys.

At the Eclipse stage, Gammer stood out from the pack. He catered to his original hardstyle fans while balancing out an exhilarating dubstep performance. There were moments where I had to force myself to take a breath because I had lost stamina. Rusko also gave a memorable performance by ending with a tantalizing reggae groove. At the Horizon stage, we saw heart moving sets from Will Clarke, Walker & Royce, and Chris Lake. The Sunset stage gave us hypnotizing beats from Tchami and the feels from Illenium. We left that night with a grin, knowing that day two was only going to be better.

We Interrupt This Review to Say…

There were some low points though. I’m always a skeptic when it comes to a “cashless” event. I love the idea of only using wristbands as a form of payment. There is a smaller chance of theft or loss and it keeps the business end more organized. However, technical difficulties are bound to happen. Sadly, and almost prophetically, SMF was a victim of this. Their cashless wristband system was down for most of day two. I was able to buy something before the system crashed, but others weren’t so lucky. For some, it ruined the good vibes that were crafted on day one. Unlike other festivals, SMF is refunding people who didn’t use up all of the wristband money. The 5% processing fee is annoying, but at least they are doing something.

Day 2 Vibes

At this point, the festival grounds were familiar. You had your favorite spots, favorite vendors, and bartenders. We had a plan on who we would see but then we received a notification that the schedule had changed. Some artists had plane troubles so they had to shift some acts around. Despite that hiccup, the vibe stayed strong. The Sunset stage felt like a magnet because of back to back to back performances from Phantoms, BONNIE X CLYDE, and 4B. I pulled away towards the end of 4B’s set to catch Audien. After a high-energy show, he hit us with consecutive Avicii tracks, ‘Levels‘ and ‘Wake Me Up‘. I swear, some people started tearing up— myself included.

Due to the schedule changes, the evening was packed with popular acts, and many of them coincided. Kaskade didn’t disappoint. His set occurred at the Sunset stage right as the sun set (I think they did that on purpose) and I loved every minute of it. Every single minute. After that, we checked out Getter‘s set. We were curious to see if he would play anything from his Visceral album, but he didn’t. It was business as usual, which I get because of the backlash he received from fans. Then we moved on to Alison Wonderland whom I have been a fan of since her debut album, Run. What amazes me about her is how she’s consistently evolving. She brings out this immense passion for every performance. That love is contagious which is why she is one of my favorite artists.

The Finale

Let’s talk about the end of the night. The hardest part of the entire weekend. Why? Because Zeds Dead, Dog Blood, and Mat Zo were on at the same time. I couldn’t decide on one so I split my time between the three. With Zeds Dead we got to hear ‘Rescue’ and some of my favorites from Northern Lights. I was so tempted to stay, but I knew I had to catch Dog Blood. Their vibe was on a similar wavelength, but times two. If I had to describe their set in one word it’d be adrenaline. I danced for as long as I could until it neared midnight so I explored on to see Mat Zo. Guys, he stole my heart. His crowd at the Horizon stage was considerably smaller than the other two, but that didn’t stop him from giving it his all.

Fireworks blasted off in the background. We could hear Skrillex, his voice hoarse, yelling into the mic, one, two, three! To our left, the Eclipse stage vibrated from Zeds Dead’s final song, followed by a roaring crowd. And in front of us was a wild Mat Zo mixing live, his full head of hair bopping to his own music, completely in sync with his audience. I didn’t care that I somehow got dirt on my face or that the dude next to me smelled like a locker room, or even that I had lost my friend somewhere at some point in the night. If you have the right vibes and the right music, you’re okay.

So that was SMF. An amazing intimate experience packed into two days that makes you think, “yeah, great things do come in small packages.”

For context, one past lineup included headliners Armin Van Buren, Porter Robinson, and Flosstradamus. This year we get different artists, but a similar balance, and we couldn’t be more thrilled.

Is there anything better than a summer music festival in perfect weather with friends? The answer is no.

The dance junkies of Tampa, Florida, know that there is truly nothing better. Every year, fans dance the weekend away with some of the best dance music at Sunset Music Festival. It’s a Disco Donnie event, which obviously means that the lineup is always stacked. This year, the festival brings some of the Billboard Dance 100’s top talent.

When Sunset Music Festival released its lineup last week, Marshmello, The Chainsmokers and Excision were all set to headline. SMF uploaded a new lineup, except this time the slot previously occupied by The Chainsmokers, was blurred out. No one knows why. All we know is that there were some “unforeseen circumstances” that caused The Chainsmokers to be taken off the bill.

However, fear not! Denver-based act, Illenium and Canadian producer, Rezz, aka Space Mom, will be replacing the duo. The fest has not yet announced if both acts will perform on Sunday, May 27th, which is the day the Chainsmokers were set to headline, or if they’ll be spread out over the two-day festival weekend. Hopefully an announcement on that will come soon.
