As reported by Bloomberg, the billionaire tech entrepreneur, whose net worth is estimated at over $11 billion, argued that taxing unrealized wealth would force founders to sell off shares in their own companies, crippling startup innovation across the Nordic region.

Lorentzon’s comments come amid intense political debate ahead of Sweden’s general election, where parties in the center-left opposition—including the Left Party and the Greens—have campaigned for new levies on billionaires and extreme wealth.

While Sweden abolished its previous wealth tax in 2007, the prospect of its revival has drawn sharp criticism from business leaders across the country.

“Yes, absolutely,” Lorentzon stated when asked if he would consider moving. “I would prefer to stay, but such a tax would mean I have to leave immediately… It benefits no one if entrepreneurs and job creators have to sell parts of their companies to pay tax. It would mean fewer companies, fewer innovations, less investment in areas such as environmental and climate technology, fewer taxpayers, and fewer shared resources for welfare. The tax is directly counterproductive.”

A History of Pushing Back Against Swedish Policy

In an opinion piece for Swedish daily Expressen, Lorentzon clarified that while he supports progressive income taxation, annual levies on net worth penalize illiquid assets. For tech founders whose wealth is tied up in company stock rather than liquid cash, paying an annual wealth tax often requires diluting their ownership stake.

This is not the first time Spotify’s leadership has clashed with Swedish policymakers. In 2016, Lorentzon and co-founder Daniel Ek published an open letter warning that strict housing markets, restrictive stock option tax policies, and red tape would force Spotify to expand its corporate footprint outside of Stockholm.

While Lorentzon’s warning specifically applies to his personal tax residency rather than Spotify’s corporate headquarters, it underscores growing anxiety within the European tech ecosystem regarding capital flight and founder retention. As of Monday morning, it appears that the left-wing parties, fueled by migrant votes, have edged out a collective majority in the election. Consequently, it appears likely this tax will come to pass and Lorezntzon will be leaving Sweden.

The Controversy Unfolded

Firstly, the controversy began when a person applied for permission to hold a public gathering. A gathering with the intention of burning holy books outside the Israeli Embassy in Stockholm. Swedish national radio broadcaster Sveriges Radio reported the approval of the request, leading to widespread criticism and concern. The EJC was one of the first to respond. They did so by issuing a press release that “strongly” condemned the decision of the Swedish authorities. EJC President Ariel Muzicant labeled the act as “provocative, racist, antisemitic, and sickening“. He emphasized that such actions have no place in a civilized society. Additionally, Muzicant stressed that disrespecting religious and cultural sensibilities sends a message of unwelcome and lack of respect towards minorities.

Steve Angello Speaks Out

Secondly, amidst the uproar, Steve Angello, a native of Sweden, used his platform to voice his distress over the Swedish government’s decision. In a heartfelt statement, he expressed his disgust and shame as a Swedish citizen witnessing such provocative events unfold in his homeland. Furthermore, he emphasized the importance of respect and understanding. Additionally, he passionately denounced the burning of religious texts as a means of provoking religious groups. Steve Angello also called for accountability. He stated that those responsible for approving such requests should step down from their positions.

Swedish House Mafia revealed the news on their socials on Monday, with the caption “We are coming home“. This will be the first-ever performance for the group in Malmö. Earlier, Sebastian Ingrosso and Steve Angello were confirmed for Big Slap. However, Axwell now joins them, and the entire trio will take over the set originally reserved for Ingrosso.

Established in 2013, Big Slap Festival has surged to become one of Sweden’s largest electronic dance music festivals, with a two-day program. Every day the festival can attract 15,000 people from all over southern Sweden and Copenhagen who come together for an unforgettable experience. Swedish House Mafia will not be the only electronic music trio to play at Big Slap this year, as 3 Are Legend, consisting of Dimitri Vegas, Like Mike, and Steve Aoki, will also perform at the festival. Other artists confirmed include Burna Boy, French Montana, Bebe Rexha, Rita Ora, Armin Van Buuren, Hardwell, Salvatore Gannaci, and W&W.
