The platform also allows pinned videos. These show up at the top of the music pages. Fans see the content artists want to highlight most. Personal storytelling is supported too with the Behind the Song feature, giving artists space to share inspiration. TikTok for Artists provides guides and educational resources that explain how to grow audiences and effectively use the platform’s features. Artists can invite team members to collaborate, ensuring that labels, managers, and marketers all have access to the same tools.

In the first quarter of 2023 alone, Luminate found that 10.8 million songs were uploaded to streaming platforms. This is over half the amount of music released in total in 2018. The report suggests that this trend is likely to continue, as more and more people use streaming services to share their music with the world.

This increase in the number of new tracks being released on streaming platforms presents both challenges and opportunities for artists and music fans. On the one hand, it can be difficult for artists to stand out from the crowd when there is so much new music being released all the time. On the other, it also means that there is more music available than ever before to choose from, which can be a great thing for fans. The key is for artists to focus on creating high-quality music that will connect with their listeners.

What This Could Imply

With the current growth rate, data predicts that there could be 43 million new tracks posted to Spotify, the world’s largest music streaming service, alone by the end of the year. This growth is also being driven by the increasing presence of AI-created tracks. Luminate measures these stats as ISRCs (International Standard Recording Code), which are unique identifiers assigned to music audio files.

In addition, Luminate found that globally, on-demand audio streams are claimed to grow by 23% the first quarter of each year. This means people are listening to more music than ever, and increasingly using streaming services to do so.

Luminate also found that on-demand audio in the United States grew by 14.2% in 2022. This growth was driven by the increasing popularity of Latin, followed by country and world music.

Spotify saw its paid subscriber base grow by 14% in 2022, reaching 205 million by the end of the year. It is the first music service to surpass 200 million paid subscribers. This growth was driven by the service’s expansion into new markets, such as India and Africa.

The growth in on-demand audio was driven by all age groups, but was particularly strong among Gen Z and millennials. The streaming growth appears to be due to the increasing popularity of smart speakers and voice-activated devices.

This is all good news for the music industry as it means that more people are listening to music, and are increasingly paying for the privilege. This is helping to support artists and the music industry as a whole.

Soundcloud continues to downsize after having to lay off 20% of its workforce last August. However, the company doesn’t shy from the truth. In fact, CEO Eliah Seton noted in an all-hands meeting that the layoffs are being made in order to help the company turn a profit. Here is what she said in the memo :

“This is a challenging but essential decision to ensure the health of our business and get SoundCloud to profitability this year. In doing so, we are securing the company’s future for the millions of artists who rely on us for their living and their self-expression, and the millions of fans who come to SoundCloud for the joy of music.”

The decision mainly affects U.S.-based employees, a representative from SoundCloud confirmed. Approximately 40 employees part of Soundcloud’s workforce will lose their jobs at the company. SoundCloud claims it has 130 million “engaged fans.” It currently hosts more than 320 million tracks from over 40 million creators.

Soundcloud is making more than changes to the company workforce these days. As a matter of fact, the music streaming platform switched its logo from orange to black. Obviously, the popularity of streaming platforms considerably slowed down the use of these websites in the past years. However, the report indicates that the music business will continue to have to deal with the problem. Streaming fraud, or fake streams, is one of the issues that the industry faces these days. This music piracy scheme is a way for aspiring acts to inflate their numbers, and thus their commercial potential, or as an avenue for grifters to steer money into their pockets by running up plays of white noise or rain sounds.

For 2022, the MUSO report detected more than 950,000 illegal downloads of David Bowie‘s music, almost as much as Justin Bieber‘s which sits at over 1 million, with more than 40% coming from the United States. Speaking of the U.S., the country accounts for 7% of all piracy traffic picked up by the report, third only behind Iran (15.05%) and India (10.29%). Interestingly, other major music markets like the United Kingdom and Germany are below the 2% mark. More than half of all the piracy in the U.S. takes place via stream-ripping, which relies on programs to get around YouTube’s copyright protection and convert audio into MP3s.

Overall, music piracy has fallen by more than half since 2017, according to MUSO. However, the company predicts another small rise in 2023.

The new payout model will put a deeper reliance on an artist’s fanbase. Moreover, instead of focusing on the number of plays an artist receives, SoundCloud will base the pay on listener’s subscriptions or advertising revenue.

The music streaming application made the official announcement on the pay model change on their website. SoundCloud CEO, Michael Weissman spoke about the new payout model.

“Many in the industry have wanted this for years. We are excited to be the ones to bring this to market to better support independent artists,” Weissman said. “SoundCloud is uniquely positioned to offer this transformative new model due to the powerful connection between artists and fans that takes place on our platform.”

He continues, “As the only direct-to-consumer music streaming platform and next-generation artist services company, the launch of fan-powered royalties represents a significant move in SoundCloud’s strategic direction to elevate, grow and create new opportunities directly with independent artists.”

SoundCloud expects fan-powered royalties to help artists create deeper connections with fans. In addition, this new payout method can help to reflect feedback and create transparency for independent artists’ among their fanbase.

Bandcamp Live will allow artists to create and host ticketed streams all on the platform. With many artists unable to tour due to COVID-19, this option will make it possible for them to make some money. Tickets can be set to specific prices, all dependent on the artists’ preferences. Believe it or not, artists can even set up a virtual merchandise table!

Those watching the stream will be able to chat with one another during the show. It’s fairly similar to YouTube’s streaming setup, but hopefully without the chat spammers. In all, this streaming option could be very useful during our current times but may not survive once live events resume. Also important to note, Bandcamp has stated that while the service is free, after March 31st, 2021, they will begin to take a 10% cut from each sale.

Currently, Bandcamp Live has a limited release available to artists. After more testing and tweaks, it should be open to more artists interested in the platform.

Quibi launched this past April and caught the eye of younger audiences due to the short form media offered. Videos on the site ranged from 7 to 10 minutes in length. Before COVID-19, this format was ideal for those in their daily lives. Now, most of us are spending more time at home and would rather spend time watching movies or longer shows.

Unfortunately, the current pandemic has left Quibi forgotten in the vast amount of streaming platforms. Like its competition, Quibi had a monthly subscription charge. At $4.99 a month it was cheaper than other platforms but it did lack in terms of media selection. It was reported that the company projected they would have 7 million subscribers after 1 year but within the last few weeks, they only have about 500,000 subscribers.

In the months going forward, Quibi has stated that their focus will be on returning money to investors. The site is expected to stay running for a couple more months but subscribers will receive additional updates soon. Quibi had a great concept but unfortunately, its design backfired due to the current times we’re going through.

New users will not have much of a listening history to refer back to. Regardless, the Time Capsule playlist could be exactly what we need to make it through the rest of 2020.

Many people have expressed excitement regarding this streaming platform. Others feel that they have seen this news before. Will it become just another streaming platform, or will this be another project that becomes a major deadmau5 success? Only time will tell.
