After releasing his sophomore album Oscillate earlier this year on Seeking Blue, Brendan Bell AKA Covex isn’t calling it a wrap. The original ‘Easy for Me’ which features Covex’s own vocals, showcases his versatility as an artist, producer, and collaborator, and includes production contributions from Trevor Christensen (Said The Sky). The track was special for Jai Wolf, who immediately asked Covex to be involved.

Which artists have been your biggest influences?

I grew up listening to a lot of alternative rock, so guys like Kings of Leon and AFI, and then later on The 1975.  A friend eventually showed me Ratatat while on an exchange trip to France, and I was just immediately captured by electronic music. Then of course Skrillex’s early work was a huge influence. Had posters and shirts from him and just gravitated so heavily toward his art.

So yea I definitely found inspiration from quite a few different folks, but currently I’m finding alot of inspiration from Duskus and Pocket and what they are doing in the scene!

We’ve heard that you went to the Seeking Blue writing camp this past year — how would you describe it?

Beautiful.

It was so much fun and so far outside my comfort zone. I’m so used to writing while I’m alone at my little desk, so being surrounded by creatives in the middle of the forest was just such a different and wonderful experience. I also learned a ton about production and writing just by being surrounded by such like-minded and talented people.

I made incredible friendships while there. Seeking Blue is such a special creative brand.

You have a few collaborations on your upcoming EP. What makes a good collaboration?

Communication.

Of course the song has to sound good and the pieces have to be there, but being able to effectively work with someone in a way that allows you both to be honest is so crucial.

We’ve heard that you’re originally from the US and moved to France, would you say that has made an impact on your music?

In more ways than I can say! It has sort of created this whole other creative identity within me that I have loved discovering. I feel like I’ve found something with music out here that I never knew existed.

If you were able to describe Feel Okay (EP) in one sentence, what would it be?

Feel Okay is about my struggles with culture change and mental health.

What inspires your music, and are there any particular themes or messages you aim to convey through your songs?

Emotion inspires my music completely. I love writing in a way that gives the listener a clear idea of the feeling I had when creating that song. I try to convey a message of hope through the music I make. I also try to help people know it’s ok to be honest with the music you make, even if the emotion is sad or not pretty.

On the heels of his latest album Before It Gets Better — which, by the way, he commented and opened up about right here with us —, he’s now unveiled yet another melodic anthem, ‘Imposter‘, out now via Seeking Blue Records. Joining forces with duo TheGraysonProject for a helping hand on vocals, this song puts together a very pleasing blend of soft talking and emotional overflow.

Imposter

Lyrically speaking, this song tackles personal insecurity, and puts the topic on the table telling the tale in first person. It goes back and forth between the duality of someone wondering if they’re enough (even for themselves), and if they’re just having deceiving thoughts. Hence, the name of the song, ‘Imposter’, and the core phrase, “What if I am? But what if I’m not?“.

Musically speaking, the tune is a proper Man Cub production from every angle you decide to look at it. Soft pianos, strings, a tight snare, drum fills, and, the one thing you’ve been looking for, a hard Dubstep beat on every drop, paired with the chords and fly-away elements Alec is known for.

Perhaps the most interesting arrangement happens during the most energetic segments of ‘Imposter’, in which you’ll have to listen on repeat at least a few times before noticing all the layers present. Here are some of them I was able to point out. Vocals. Electric Guitar. Drums. Tube synths. And saws. That’s outstanding! The amount of ear candy can please even the most strict of critiques.

1) What was your inspiration and motivation behind Before It Gets Better?

Man Cub: I have so much I could say about it so I’ll try not to be too wordy.

Man Cub: Thematically and lyrically this album is definitely for people going through it. I co-wrote the vocals and lyrics to every song except one, and that was really important for me. Going into each writing session I told the writers that I really wanted to write about internal struggle – that included depression, grief, addiction, etc. So the writing sessions were almost like therapy because we were so vulnerable about what was going on in our lives. In some cases that included life altering events like loved ones affected by cancer or suicide. In other cases we talked about fighting your inner demons, feeling lost, or unheard. It was special for me to write with the singers and be open about things like that because I was so tired of breakup songs and love songs, I really wanted to talk about real issues. 

Man Cub: I think suffering is relative, so each song is relatable on some level. The tagline I came up with for the album is “before it gets better, it could get worse, but it gets better.”

Man Cub: Musically, I wanted each song to maintain its beauty and character even if all audio quality was lost. Or for example if you were to play my song on the piano, I wanted each song to still be pretty and recognizable.  I think sometimes electronic music can get so focused on the bells and whistles that the strength of the core idea gets lost.  It was a hard guideline to follow for me because you can keep adding things to a song forever. That restriction helped me to simplify things and write some really strong melodies and progressions, at least in my opinion.  

Man Cub: I was also really inspired by anime and the music from anime. That’s obvious in the art direction as well as the opening track.  A lot of anime has a cello playing the main theme, so I wanted “Beauty” and “Message” to be almost like character themes in a score.  

2) What is the sentiment around releasing a sophomore album and how has your music evolved from your first album?

Man Cub: I think I’m getting better at not overproducing things and instead making sure the bones are good. I’m sure other producers can relate. I also really wanted to have an album with a consistent theme and art direction. That was really challenging for me because I have such broad taste.  That’s why it was important for me to co-write the vocals, because even though sonically each song is different, the melodies and lyrics still sound like me.  I also wanted a full body of work without any collaborations to kind of show my range as an artist.  I still think I can do more, but I did my best with the time I had for this album.

3) Can you tell us about some of your biggest influences that have affected you as an artist, your sound, and/or the creation of this album?

Man Cub: My biggest inspirations for the last decade have been the obvious legends like Avicii, Porter Robinson, David Guetta, deadmau5, Skrillex, and SHM.  If you are familiar with their stuff, some of them have had an obvious influence on me. 

Man Cub: Joe Hisaishi who composed much of the music for the Studio Ghibli films, and Bon Iver who needs no introduction, have had more of a recent impact on my taste and music production.  I know it may not be that obvious in my sound, but melodically and creatively they have been the most inspiring to me lately.

4) What would be your dream collaboration if you could choose any artist?

Man Cub: If I could pick one producer it would be Calvin Harris because almost everything he touches is iconic.  If I could pick one singer it would be Chris Martin from Coldplay. You didn’t expect such basic answers did you.

5) Can you tell us about your hopes for how people will listen to Before It Gets Better and what they might experience?

Man Cub: Sentimentally, I hope people listening to Before It Gets Better will feel seen.  Like they’re not alone going through whatever they are going through. I want them to feel encouraged.  Musically, I hope people can get lost in it.  It took a long time to make, so I hope it was worth it!
