Severe overnight rain poured down across downtown Chicago, swamping Grant Park with up to 4 inches of water and transforming key thoroughfares into mud pits. The national weather agency in Canada warned of the possibility of up to 50 mm of localized heavy rainfall starting Sunday morning. While the rain held off at Veld for most of Sunday afternoon the worst of the rain came at approximately 7:30pm on Sunday evening with high wind.

Veld was still able to keep the show going and the energy level in the crowd was high as deadmaus B2B Kaskade closed out the mainstage at Veld. The Veld team had fun with the ‘river’ that appeared nearby the Bass Stage and managed to clear most of the flooding before the main acts started.

While attendees tried to take cover where they could, they called it one of the wildest moments they’ve ever experienced. And the weather didn’t dampen spirits — the party kept going.

The festival grounds turned into a mud pit later in the evening on Sunday following the severe downpour.

Meanwhile in Chicago, it was reported that the grounds were covered in mud while attendees made the most of it. Lollapalooza was forced to delay the start of Sunday until 3 pm before fans were able to make their way into the grounds.

Videos emerged of a girl who got stuck in knee deep in mud at Lollapalooza.

Forecast

Reno meteorologist Mark Deutschendorf informed the Bay Area News site SFGATE that Northern Nevada will expect monsoon-type precipitation. According to Deutschendorf, rain showers and thunderstorms may begin on Sunday. If the rain does indeed hit the desert, the conditions may raise some concerns for Burning Man attendees. Muddy surfaces can impact travel, both by air and on the ground. Nonetheless, late August moisture is common in Northern Nevada, and we hope that a 2023 repeat does not occur.

2023 Floods

This reminds us of Burning Man 2023, when over 70,000 attendees were temporarily stranded on the muddy playa due to the rain. Bicycles were unusable, and travel into and out of the desert was suspended for a few days. We can’t forget how many DJs hitchhiked and planned escape strategies to leave Reno. They had to head over to their other gigs, like Vintage Culture and Diplo. Both artists made it to their respective shows in Chicago and DC.

Present Concerns

Burners are less than bothered by this forecast. Multiple comments on the Burning Man Facebook group and Reddit chats indicate that they are ready for what may come to them. However, some comments still recommend practicing caution and responsibility. This is because RVs and vehicles could get stuck in the mud.

It’s a worldwide trend, though an undesirable one. Several music festivals have had their weekends washed down and out by rain lately, From Tomorrowland Brasil, to Ultra Miami, to Movement, and even, memorably so, Burning Man. Weather conditions are, as far as we’re aware, largely out of human control, and so festivals can only receive the news and get ready for the adversity.

This weekend, all eyes are on Tomorrowland.

Tomorrowland Faces Scorching Temperatures, Then Potential Storm Threat

The eagerly awaited first weekend of Tomorrowland might face a weather challenge. Forecasters are predicting high temperatures reaching around 85 degrees Fahrenheit (30 degrees Celsius), with Friday and Saturday offering a brief respite from rain. However, the lack of rain may lead to increased pressure on emergency services. Heatstroke is a very real thing.

As the weekend progresses, the conditions will change. A band of potentially severe thunderstorms is forecast to roll across the region overnight from Saturday to Sunday, posing a potential risk to campers at Dreamville. Some weather models hint at the possibility of disruptive storms. Despite this potential threat, organizers remain calm and somewhat confident.

“We have a dedicated on-site meteorologist who provides ongoing updates on weather conditions“, stated spokesperson Debby Wilmsen. “Comprehensive emergency plans and response scenarios have been established for a variety of situations, encompassing both rain and intense heat. The reality is that the weather is ultimately unpredictable, so our focus is on proactive preparation for any eventuality“.

In the past, Tomorrowland used hail cannons to dispel thunderclouds — because rain is the last thing you want with a main stage in a valley. At the time, weatherman Frank Deboosere, among others, dismissed their use as nonsense. “We haven’t had hail cannons for years”, says Wilmsen. “We monitor the weather situation from the Event Control Center (ECC), which monitors safety on the site”.

The final day of the first weekend is forecast to be cooler and more changeable, with a chance of showers. Maximum temperatures are still expected to range between 66 and 73 degrees.

Prepare To Launch

The venue consists of a massive 18,000+ square ft hangar turned into club, and ranked 39th in the DJ Mag Top 100 Venues poll in 2023. As the night progressed, harder and faster beats would reign the sets, while everyone kept dancing and turned the warehouse into the Volcano Stage. The inside felt like An upside down airport runway with massive led screens and light beams that pulsed throughout the weekend.

If you wanted some air you could step outside to find the remaining stages. The Tsunami stage was an expansive outdoor stage that hosted some of the grooviest soundscapes. With a hard surface that remained solid during the harder rain days. The cold breeze did not stop anyone from having a blast and dancing til the end of each night. Logistically the layout was pretty easy to navigate.

Security was respectful and professional, with metal detectors and wands to double check. I did not see any major safety concerns. There were just enough food truck options, including vegan choices! Moreover, there was a water station outside and water coolers in the hangar, as well in the afterparties. There were some vendors, including a harm prevention booth by Safe Circles ATX, giving out testing kits and Narcan. Shoutout to 6AM for having a booth as well, definitely one of my favorite teams that host unhinged events in LA.

The smallest stage had lots of magic in it, therefore honoring the name The Realm. A small tent with nothing but amazing energy, sick beats, and a minimalist, bunker-like atmosphere. You could find some of the best regional up and coming underground DJs, and some special second sets by our headliners.

The House Of House

There is nothing like a diverse collection of some of the best House acts in the world. Most sets blended so many different styles of House and Techno. If you wanted some Bass House and Tech House you had Mau P and Chris Lake, with their own afters. Then you had Chicago’s underground princess Azzecca and Super Creep’s VNSSA, with delicious dark grooves, heavy beats, and amazing energy.

Wax Motif rode the Tsunami stage with his G House mastery. He involved softer melodies and mixed in high octane tracks, making it a powerful and one of the most diverse sets in the Festival. Astra Club was a divine encounter of Carlita and DJ Tennis, giving the audience great Melodic-Afro House. Lastly, we couldn’t move onto the next segment until we honor Kaskade’s Redux set. Not only was the rain at its hardest, but it was the very last set at the Tsunami Stage. He delivered soothing Deep House. With the release of his newest ‘Redux 006’ EP, he gathered the audience like a wave and made everyone transcend spiritually. He included some deeper mixes of some of his best tracks, and added some of his Kx5 songs. Truly in awe with that set.

Techno Time

If you felt that House wasn’t hitting the spot you turned into the dark side. The Techno was technoing, I mean it. The adrenaline during the techno sets transformed everyone into feral animals. Even the Melodic Techno sets were so spooky and high energy I got scared for a second.

Space 92, T78, and Eli Brown brought their A game delivering nasty sets that melted everybody’s face into lava. Anfisa Letyago and Patrick Mason blew everyone away with heir sets. Besides, Saturday and Sunday had the highest bpms of the weekend. Saturday’s after party felt like an initiation into a witch coven, a techno coven. The high priestess of Hard Techno Sara Landry invoked accelerated tracks with massive amounts of bass and obscurity. Jenna Shaw made her Seismic Debut opening for Sara with a crazy selection of songs that transported us into the Twilight Zone. Finally, Chippy Nonstop gave us the fine arts of Acid into the end of Night 2.

It did not stop there, as Techno Shamans Klangkuenstler and 999999999 closed down the Volcano Stage with the most twisted sets full of Schrank and the best energy I’ve felt inside a venue in a while. When we had to give our heartbeats a break, we had beautiful Melodic Techno acts. Those Shadows immersed us in a new journey of self discovery with their tunes. And the weekend ended with a powerful show with Korolova b2b Franky Wah. The pair closed down an epic weekend with some of the best progressive tunes. The last song played was ‘Be Strong’ by Korolova, really encompassing the Seismic Experience.

Final Notes on Seismic 6.0

For being a “boutique festival” with only 3 stages in a relatively small venue, it truly packs a punch. The vibes were A+, even though the production was minimalistic. The organizers did an amazing job at making the event fill gigantic with the selection of artists, while providing an intimate insight into the underground scene. I’m wishing nothing but the best for Seismic.

The weather has been far from perfect in Black Rock City for this year’s Burning Man festival. Very heavy rain turned the dry desert landscape into a mud lagoon overnight, leaving attendees literally stranded. The conditions have become worse as the Black Rock City airport has closed, and it’s not accepting any flights in or out of the place.

Without anywhere to go, people at Burning Man have been strongly advised to make good use of the water, food and fuel they have on hand. This, because there’s no way of getting more supplies as of now.

Far from the debate of them being upset or not about the cost and time of the trip just to get to this point, attendees are currently in a critical situation, as the magic from the Burning Man premise has turned its back on them: they currently are in the middle of the desert, without consistent access to telecommunications, with limited resources, and with the constant risk of their electronics getting in contact with the water around their vans and trailers.

Shelter in Place as Burning Man is Hit with Rain

Authorities have ordered Festival attendees to remain sheltered in place on festival grounds, as a rainstorm made its way to the Black Rock Dessert.

The emblematic Burning Man Festival 2023 has a planned duration of 8 days between August 27th and September 4th. Burners (festival-goers nomenclature) are expected to shelter in place through this Sunday, as the weather forecast indicates.

Facing Many Challenges

This is not the only roadblock that this year’s Burning Man is facing. Earlier last week, its official Instagram posted a picture stating the remnant rain from Hurricane Hillary hit its campgrounds. This caused delays in multiple art installations. However, the festival made it work just in time as burners made their way to Black Rock City. Furthermore, climate activists from the Seven Circles activist group blocked the roads for festivalgoers while driving to the campgrounds. The protest resulted in a miles-long traffic jam, which was then cleared out by the local rangers.

The Burning Man Traffic X page continues to update attendees regarding airport closings, driving restrictions, and tips to avoid food and water shortages. Burners from all walks of life, including many DJs set to play through the weekend, are to remain safe away from the rain and lower temperatures hit at night.

The weekend at ÎLESONIQ

It did not take long for the festivities to begin at a high pace, with Michael Sparks, a hometown hero, tearing the NEON Stage down with Bass House bangers. On the OASIS Stage, îLESONIQ’s main stage – one of the biggest in North America – Claptone performed in the rain, and delivered delicious house with a couple of classics remixed in that signature style. Speaking of the rain, the vibes were immaculate though it was impossible to stay dry, which made the sets of Matroda, Alesso, and Chris Lake even better.

Sunday, the sun was shining from the very first instant at the MIRAGE Stage, and LAYZ laid down the heaviness, with massive beats and a healthy dose of percussive metal for those who like their bass demonic. Over on the Coca-Cola NEON Stage, ANNA B2B Sama’ Abdulhadi had fans hypnotized by techno beats and digital froth of the two world-class DJs. Finally, to close out the entire weekend, Above & Beyond prepared the table for Martin Garrix, who continues to deliver astonishing performances in Montreal, a city he loves to come back to every year.

More than 65,000 people marched on the grounds of Parc Jean-Drapeau, coming from Canada and beyond to party nonstop for the whole weekend. Obviously, ÎLESONIQ made sure everyone had a wonderful time with all the food, rest areas, restrooms, and amenities necessary. Under Armin’s third studio album, we find a song with Cathy Burton’s beautiful vocals, perfect to liven up the party. However, unlike other works on the album, it has a sad and reflective essence. There is a little hidden message nestled in there: inspiration and creativity can come like rain right in those not-so-good moments.

2020-2021 has probably been one of the worst years for humanity and that isn’t an understatement at all. The pandemic has undoubtedly wreaked a lot of havoc on the mood in society. Although, in these periods of sadness and depression, we can find a sense of calm and peace that feels like a rain breeze in summer after a drought.

That is what captured what in my opinion is one of the most underrated tracks of the trance legend. Now Ferry Corsten amplifies the song’s essence and transposes it to 2021, with the new deep and ambient project he has under his hands.

FERR’s Deep Rework To Armin van Buuren- ‘Rain’

‘Rain’ features a somber undertone that rings true through the track. Add ambient and deep elements that represent the sensation of rain falling on a window. In this way, it alludes to how many of us have felt throughout the pandemic.

At the same time, this version further enhances ‘Rain’s hidden message. We are not alone at any time, although these moments of confinement make us feel otherwise. We are all one even though we live many miles apart, speak different languages, and have different cultures.

‘Rain’ is undoubtedly a track that continues to evoke feelings of togetherness during hard times. At the same time, it feeds our sense of peace and tranquility to continue fighting against our bad times.

2017 just keeps getting more and more ironic. With both the the political and global climate seemingly aligned in mutual turmoil, Mother Nature once again seems to be toying with us.

A massive storm moved in during Sunday’s festivities at Storm Festival Shanghai, which forced festival organizers to prematurely shut the party down. Torrential flooding conditions made it nearly impossible to continue with the day’s events and left organizers in damage control, shifting focus on salvaging electrical equipment.

Ironically enough, prior to the cancellation, the festival’s social media was making use of the hashtags #STORMSHANGHAI #STORMISCOMING#STORM2017. Eerie.

Sorry we couldn’t finish our dj set in shanghai tonight but that torrential rain was insane and the gear was completely flooded. Thanks to everyone who stayed and braved the elements 💦☔️☔️✌️🙏
