“‘Control’ is about a very fundamental human nature, levels of sexual tension. We’re playing off of tension and release. We just went back and forth and this track came together quickly. I wanted to test it during my set at ABGT 500 back in October so we mixed it in my hotel that morning and not that much has changed since then”, OLAN says.

Beyond this music collaboration, OLAN & QRTR are also set to join ODESZA on the acclaimed electronic music duo’s summer/fall North American tour. Moreover, OLAN & QRTR are working on a very special live show that should not be missed. Clearly, the two love working together.

Following a successful tour in 2022 for their album The Last Goodbye, the electronic duo will kick start their much awaited follow-up in New York. This tour will include headlining performances at festivals like Bonnaroo, Electric Forest, Governors Ball, Lollapalooza and Outside Lands. In all they will total 24 stops across North America this year, including one in Canada and one in Mexico.

Odesza was nominated at the 65th Annual Grammy Awards for the Best Dance/Electronic Album for The Last Goodbye. They also recently released their new single ‘To Be Yours (feat. Claud)’.

Presale is set to begin on March 29th at each venue’s local time. Live-Nation presale will occur on March 30th and the access code is OPENER. General sale will take place on March 31st. Last year most of their shows were sold out so sign up early here and don’t miss out.

This music producer has been a key contributor to the Anjunabeats label for over a decade. As one of the more inventive and progress producers, he has often paved the way for new sound. In 2011 he released the glitch-hop progressive house album It’s Artificial. In 2013 we gave us the bright, instrumental hip-hop album If It Were You, We’d Never Leave. And in 2018 he weaved the songwriting of Ane Brun and Alison May into a modern alt-pop masterpiece, In My Last Life. 

Andrew Bayer is one of the only out LGBTQ+ acts in electronic music; and Duality includes more LGBTQ+ contributors in an effort to be inclusive and dynamic. He has tenures at Ultra, Group Therapy, and clubs all over the world. Some of his great hits include ‘Super Human’, ‘Magitek’, and ‘The District’.

2012 saw the launch of Group Therapy Radio in Bangalore, India as a direct descendant of Trance Around the World, the UK based group’s former weekly radio show. Every 50th episode is celebrated in shape of a performance in a major city in the world. London was the latest in the list with the 450th edition being held there last year.

The exemplary 500th edition sees the return of the likes of Grum, Mat Zo and Andrew Bayer. It also marks the debut of Arty’s Alpha 9 pseudonym and US based producer Olan’s debut for a ABGT milestone show. Ironically, Mat Zo and Adam Bayer were part of the lineup for the first installment of the show 10 years ago, too.

‘Chaos’ is fueled with the downtempo rhythms of 2013 from Part 1. It features UK singer-songwriter Run Rivers, who has previously worked with artists Tinlicker and Shadow. Now, he’s helping Bayer enhance his Anjunadeep roots with great Talking Heads energy. Meanwhile, Part 2 gives listeners the big room anthems and club mixes we dance all night long to. So, the double album is able to weave two creative threads together into one for the first time since It’s Artificial.

“Since day one, I have always struggled with how to present myself. I love making these experimental home-listening albums of electronica and indie sounds. But I also love DJing and making trance bangers. On my last album, I had to remix the album in full after it was released to make the worlds fit. This time around I wanted to capture all the breadth, depth, and tension within that duality under one single project.”

The intimate voices, along with the quiet organic tones and the fluidity of the theme, create a sense of unearthly calm and eeriness. This production is very environmental and brings romantic nuances to its melodies. This piece is a journey through a melodic sea in which we discover many nuances in the form of sounds.

Olan is undoubtedly a rising star, and this single suggests that she has much to give. We don’t doubt that she will be one of the next big names in the downtempo world. The statement echoes significantly thought the album, since Mat focused on bringing attitude to Illusion of Depth. Throughout the experience, the album provides gritty and rough textures among the cleaner tones. By all means, the intention is crystal clear, as the edges themselves are a pivotal part of the picture. The artist clearly placed a distinct identity onto each track, in a way that allows them to connect. Overall, it earnestly provides an interesting hearing experience that still hits all the best and memorable marks.

On that note, to distill an aspect of how this came to be, you can hear the live studio session of ‘Problems‘ with Olan, who played an integral role in the album.

Tracks

Illusion of Depth introduces variety and shifting tones from the starting track, ‘In Media Res‘, highlighting the movements, attitude, and grit going forward. From that point, ‘Love Songs‘ enters, and you’ll notice that each previous release off the album has a new intro that binds tracks together. Onward, ‘Problems‘ with Olan, and ‘The Next Chapter‘ featuring MC GQ come into play. ‘Bruxism‘ then shows up as a highlight track, presenting unique energy and textures through its driving and whirling synths alongside powerful percussive tones.

Following, ‘Fly While You’re Still Free‘ brings a combination between powerful rhythms with a melodic edge to them. ‘Petrushka‘ then pulls things back toward a darker and deeper sound, giving it an ethereal tone with the plucks towards the second half of it. On the other hand, ‘Dangerous Feeling’ completely pulls on melodic harmonies, taking the album into brighter territories with the characteristic vocals and infectious rhythms. Nonetheless, the track adds crunchy and acidic tones as it progresses, leading into Olan, ‘Colours‘ with Olan. Right after, we’re hit with one of Mat Zo’s best tracks to date that is also alongside Olan, ‘Paralysis‘. It leaves a memorable mark with its vulnerable atmosphere that then strikes into a cathartic and enormous break. Finally, ‘Begin Again‘ ends the album on a delicate and star-twinged track which maintains the best features throughout the experience.

Firstly, ‘Colours’ starts off with a filtering intro of synths and Olan’s vocals which takes a dive into a vibrant and infectious build. In addition, the distinct pop flare it has provides an exceptionally up-beat and fun groove. Simultaneously, Mat and Olan’s synergy is highlighted even further, showcasing how diverse they could be. The bridge gives a hypnotic sensation before punching back into the main body, this time hosting a shimmering arpeggio. Overall, ‘Colours’ acts as a reminder for Mat’s ability to not only create something infectious and catchy, but to also make it interesting with his sound design too.

Mat Zo: about Illusion of Depth

I started working on Illusion of Depth because I wanted to make a body of work that was cohesive. I’m usually known for being all over the place, but I wanted to make an album that had unifying qualities. In this case, partly it’s the tempo. Everything on the album is in the 124-128 bpm range, but within that constraint, I still managed to be all over the place stylistically. There’s also a lot more live/non-digital elements on this album than my previous work. I was getting really tired of how clean everything is in this corner of dance music. Above all else, I wanted to make an album with grit, texture, and attitude. I wanted to make a fuck you statement to the safe, sugary, fluffy world of a post-EDM trance, Zo says.

‘Problems’ feat. Olan

Kicking off, the track introduces itself with a chunky bassline with some captivating sound design lining the edges. From there, ‘problems’ immediately jumps into the meat of it with Olan’s faded and drowning vocals. The dichotomy between the clean capabilities of Mat’s precision in production and the intentionally muddied vocals form a magnetic listen. Progressing, there’s always something to pay attention to, especially with the swooshing synths and movement in Olan’s voice. In continuation, it breaks down to emphasize a sweeping and grandiose ethereal sound. However, it doesn’t end there considering the heavy acid-trance outro, making the track feel all over the place, yet very cohesive simultaneously. All things considered, we’re excited to hear what else Mat Zo has in store for us in Illusion of Depth.

Notably, Olan’s contribution to the song and album overall do not go unnoticed, as the vocals are integral to what makes ‘Problems’ such a great track.
