Psychedelic imagery and electronic music go back a long way. Festival fashion is full of mushroom prints on hats, oversized tees, bodysuits and pashminas. Stage visuals lean into melting colours, surreal creatures and otherworldly landscapes, especially in psytrance and bass music, where what’s on the screens can be as memorable as the set. Album artwork picks up the same visual language.

A mushroom on a hoodie doesn’t tell you anything about the person wearing it. For most fans it’s an art choice, a nod to the scene or just a good print. But it shows how far psychedelic culture reaches into the way electronic music looks and feels.

The Case Report Everyone Is Talking About

The conversation has taken a serious turn. A case report in Frontiers in Neuroscience describes an 80-year-old woman who had lived with advanced Alzheimer’s disease for around a decade. By the time of treatment she was speaking mostly in single syllables, had lost bladder control and relied on caregivers to get around.

She was given a 5 g dose of psilocybin-containing mushrooms. The first phase was rough: she was agitated, sweating heavily and fell into a long, sleep-like state. Then, around 19 hours in, she began speaking in full sentences and recalling events from her life that she hadn’t been able to put into words for years.

Over the following days and weeks, she regained bladder control, started dressing herself, made eye contact and held conversations. A later 3 g dose was followed by more talkativeness, humour and easier walking.

The report comes with big limits. It covers one patient, the improvements were temporary, and the authors state that the disease was not reversed. It doesn’t prove that psilocybin treats Alzheimer’s, and it’s certainly not a how-to. That 5 g dose was given to a single patient in a medical context, and nobody should read it as guidance.

Dancefloor vs. Clinic

If you’ve had a psychedelic experience at a festival and the research has you curious, it’s worth knowing how different the two settings are. Clinical studies involve screening, preparation, professional support and follow-up. People with certain mental health histories are at higher risk of serious reactions, including psychosis, and the HSE notes that psilocybin can cause intense anxiety, confusion and panic. Magic mushrooms are a controlled substance in most countries, so any legitimate therapeutic use happens through approved research.

A rave can’t replicate any of that, and findings from a medical setting don’t translate to a night out. The case report doesn’t suggest recreational use is good for your brain.

Where Music Fits In

Music is part of the research, too. Teams at Johns Hopkins have used curated playlists during supervised psilocybin sessions to shape the emotional flow of the experience. Anyone who has felt a slow ambient build open into a huge melodic breakdown will get why.

Jon Hopkins’ 2021 album Music for Psychedelic Therapy is the most obvious crossover for electronic fans. It trades driving rhythms for spacious, immersive soundscapes built for introspection, and it’s worth a listen if you want the quieter side of the genre.

The Bigger Picture

Psychedelic imagery will keep showing up on festival T-shirts and main stage screens, and the research will keep moving at its own careful pace. The two stories overlap, but they aren’t the same one. One is about art, identity and atmosphere, and the other is about medicine and evidence. Telling them apart is how you enjoy the culture without confusing it with the science.

Of course, their relationship was only one part of their story. Charlotte remains one of the biggest names in electronic music today. She continues to headline major festivals across the globe and recently celebrated 15 years since her first Tomorrowland appearance with a surprise Mainstage set. Enrico continues to be one of techno’s most respected producers and performers, building a sound that has earned him fans far beyond the genre’s core audience.

While the news feels bittersweet, their statement made one thing clear. Respect and appreciation still remain between them. They said they will continue to be part of each other’s lives and sincerely wish one another the best. For fans who followed both their personal and musical journey, that message offers at least a small measure of comfort.

Relationships end, even the ones that seem perfect from the outside. Still, for fans who followed their journey over the last six years, this news is undeniably bittersweet. Fans attending Garrix’s mainstage set got the first listen to ‘Fireflies.‘ The collaboration arrives this Friday through Darkroom Records, pairing Bono’s unmistakable vocals with U2’s signature songwriting and Garrix’s melodic dance production.

‘Fireflies‘ marks the first official release credited to Martin Garrix and U2 together. However, the two artists have worked closely behind the scenes for several years. Their creative relationship dates back to ‘We Are The People,’ the official song of UEFA Euro 2020, where Bono and The Edge joined Garrix on one of the tournament’s most recognizable anthems.

The partnership extends deeper. Garrix later contributed production to U2’s ‘Your Song Saved My Life.’ Later, he reunited with Bono and The Edge during sessions that eventually led to ‘Scars.‘ According to The Edge, the song originally began as a Martin Garrix demo before evolving into a U2 release.

Garrix rewarded Tomorrowland fans with the first live performance of ‘Fireflies’ before official release. The surprise appearance from The Edge gave the Mainstage crowd an exclusive preview of the track.

The release also continues an impressive run of collaborations for Garrix. The festival says safety remains the top priority as the show returns in a limited capacity. Fireworks will only be deployed at certain moments during the MainStage sets, and only after a daily evaluation involving local authorities, the festival’s on-site meteorologist, and the team inside the Event Control Centre (ECC).

Tomorrowland is also layering in extra precautions beyond the daily weather checks. Permanent fire guards are now stationed around the site, and additional security staff have been placed near the MainStage area to monitor conditions throughout the day and night.

Even with the green light, organisers are careful not to present this as a done deal. If weather shifts or on-site conditions change, the pyrotechnic elements can be scaled back or pulled entirely at any point during the show. The festival reiterated that safety takes precedence over spectacle, regardless of what has been planned.

The situation looked very different just a week earlier. During weekend one, Boom Mayor Jeroen Baert and Rumst Mayor Jurgen Callaerts, both N-VA, joined Antwerp Provincial Governor Cathy Berx and the local fire brigade in issuing a total fireworks ban. The province was under code orange at the time, signalling a heightened risk of wildfires amid dry conditions that had been building across the region.

That ban marked a notable shift for a festival that has built much of its visual identity around elaborate stage productions, pyrotechnics included. Whether the improved conditions hold through the rest of weekend two remains to be seen, but for now, Tomorrowland has some room to manoeuvre on the MainStage.

Michiel mentioned how they didn’t even realize how big the global attention was on Tomorrowland during this Summer’s stage fire and the aftermath. Manu says that the image of the black smoke rising from the stage defines the moment best for him. It’s hard for them to even see those images again. They called the event the “sledgehammer blow of our lives”.

Initially, the brothers feared they would have to cancel Tomorrowland, but they were relieved to learn that there were no injuries. Then the panic set in as they remembered 38,000 people would be on site for camping the very next day. They realized cancellation was basically not an option at that point. They set into action. They remarked that a positive mindset was key and they had to keep thinking that they would solve the issue. They refer to the entire process as pure survival mode.

Once authorities cleared the site, Tomorrowland was told the stage had to be dismantled. They were lucky enough to locate a large crane in Antwerp near the Tomorrowland offices, so they called the source right away to get that crane.

The Plan

The team worked into the night on Wednesday to devise a new main stage that could be built in time. Then they had to phone Tomorrowland’s loyal suppliers, who just watched their equipment go up in flames to ask for more equipment. Luckily, everyone was willing to give everything to this herculean effort.

And that’s when it became clear how strong the bond is when it really matters and what an exceptional group of professionals comes together every year to build something in Boom that’s unique in the world – Michiel Beers

It wasn’t until Thursday night after midnight that Belgium’s largest crane arrived on site, escorted by police and special transport directly from the port of Antwerp. Michiel is still blown away that they were able to back the crane onto the festival site in that state, as they feared it would be impossible to truck in with everything assembled on site.

Two Scenarios

As the crane got to work, the team realized there were only two possible scenarios. In the first, the dismantling wouldn’t be done in time and that entire area would be closed on day 1, severely limiting capacity. In this scenario, the campers remain on the campgrounds with alternative programming and everybody else would arrive without the mainstage. The second scenario would require a later opening time, but would get the mainstage ready and allow everybody to enjoy Day 1 together. They wanted to communicate as openly and honestly as possible throughout the situation. At that point things were handing by a thread and they needed to be honest.

The Success

At around 4am on Friday morning the work began. If anything went wrong it could mean the entire festival was going to be cancelled. Then after noon on Friday the last tower came down perfectly. Immediately, the announcement went out that Option 2 would win out and the festival was saved!

As workers raced around the clock to get the new stage operational, a crowd formed to watch the team. Rather than dancing at other stages, the attendees wanted to watch the phoenix rise from the ashes. Every time something happened there was applause from the onlookers.

The brothers admit that tears were flowing as the stage opened up and the crowd rushed in. Only at the end of Weekend 2 was there time to process the enormity of what happened.

The Aftermath

The brothers remarked on all of the coverage afterwards and how media outlets around the world commented that in any other country, the festival would have been cancelled. They felt immensely proud of Belgium and the Tomorrowland organization. The interview was only made possible because the brothers were elected as “Belgian of the Year”. The brothers say that if they became a familiar face, they wouldn’t be able to sense what visitors experience anymore. They love to go and disappear into the crowd. Michiel remarks on how one time a visitor asked him to take a photo of the visitor and a chef on site, not realizing who they were asking. He took the photo.

The Future

Tomorrowland plots a future Thailand expansion but mostly hopes to keep doing the same thing for as long as possible. The brothers are proud to remain a family business without investment funds and external shareholders. For now they want to highlight the valuable contributions of the Tomorrowland team and designers for all that they do and have helped to do for 2025.
