Coming soon to YouTube Originals, Coachella plans to release a documentary celebrating the festival’s 20th anniversary. On March 31st, ‘Coachella: 20 Years in the Desert’ will debut for fans to stream. The film will feature performances by major acts like Daft Punk, LCD Soundsystem, Radiohead, Björk, Rage Against The Machine, and more. Seen as one of the biggest events in music, Coachella continues to proliferate each year. What better way than to celebrate two decades worth of Coachella than with a documentary.

Chris Perkel, producer and director of the film, highlights the history, performances, and untold stories that makeup Coachella’s history. The film will feature exclusive interviews and performance footage from a plethora of artists. Since Coachella has been running every year since 1999, the film wants to focus on the festival’s origins and behind-the-scene moments.

YouTube also announced that it will continue as the festival’s exclusive live streaming partner for Coachella 2020. This marks YouTube’s tenth consecutive year to live stream Coachella around the world. The announcement of both the Coachella 20th anniversary documentary comes shortly after the Coachella lineup announcement. Coachella 2020 will run for two weekends of April 10-12 and April 17-19.

This is not the first time the festival has changed its dates. In 2016, III Points took place in October, but the event almost canceled due to Hurricane Matthew. The festival still took place, but some performing acts didn’t even show up due to the weather. After returning in 2017 and a hiatus in 2018, festival organizers strategically changed the date to a less stormy time of the year for 2019. All in all, the dates have never been super consistent, but May seems to be a good move.

2020 will mark the festival’s 7th installment. Its upbringing is unique, in which their website explains the event as a “grass-roots approach to building a festival experience”. Their lineups include local up-and-coming artists as well as major names in the industry. Some of their past lineups have featured artists like Tyler the Creator, Richie Hawtin, LCD Soundsystem, RÜFÜS DU SOL, and more.

Here’s a name that we haven’t heard in a while, and they’re back with a banging new album. MSTRKRFT joins forces with the mau5trap family to bring their latest offering, the ‘Sunshine of My Life’ EP. Jesse Keeler and Al-P make up the Canadian electronic duo, better known as MSTRKRFT (pronounced “Master Craft”). Formerly gracing the golden era of dance-punk and electro house, MSTRKRFT delivers an all-new craft of their sound. This album features four tracks of raw and big-room MSTRKRFT techno that will light up any dancefloor, from the underground to the mainstage.

Following their recent releases ‘Doria’ and ‘Buffalo Fat,’ MSTRKRFT is leading us into an all-new evolution of their sound. The former Toronto-based, DFA 1979 members have graced the golden era of 2005’s booming indie-electronica scene. This acclaimed duo has been crushing it in their genre-pushing crossovers since the days of Daft Punk, LCD Sound System, Chromeo, and Boys Noize to name a few. MSTRKRFT’s early days in electronic dance music stem from a more abrasive, funky electronica side of things. The duo has done remixes for several artists like Justice, Metric, Kylie Minogue, and John Legend. It’s rejuvenating to see and hear how MSTRKRFT can effortlessly crossover to an array of different genres. They are truly masters of their crafts.

Jumping into their latest offering, ‘Sunshine of My Life’ EP tells us a tale surrounded by exhilarating after-hours techno vibes. Think back to those foggy, late nights spent inside an underground warehouse, living the night away with your friends. That’s what this album feels like, and it’s a musical intoxication that you can only shake off by dancing the night away.

1. Oh Yea

Here’s the opening song that you’re looking for as the theme song leading into your fondest memories of late nights spent at your favorite afters. ‘Oh Yea’ is the first track on ‘Sunshine of My Life’ that greets you with classic, pounding techno kick drums. Ascending notes and a chord melody pave the path into a provocative flurry of synths. This song is like hearing a train of a low-end bassline fading in and out, playing tricks on your ears, just before a heady drop hits. ‘Oh Yea’ is the perfect song to start out any night or prolong an intense night of debauchery. It’s sultry, dark, and progressive in every way.

2. Ear

The song beings with a classic, whirling, MSTRKRFT style electro-synth that meets with more familiar faces of the industrial, underground. Packing classic boots and cats to a four on the floor beat paired with a reverberating myriad of acid, ‘Ear’ is definitely an earful (in an addicting way). If you’re familiar with the abrasiveness of synths and sounds from MSTRKRFT’s electro-house days, you’ll definitely enjoy this. ‘Ear’ is a marriage of MSTRKRFT’s old sounds meeting new sounds that lead into a breakdown of ricocheting acid zings that overlay a pulsating bassline. Chittering, high-frequency synths meet crashing waves of cymbals like a symbiotic, parasite meets host relationship that you can’t help but get down to.

3. Let Me See You Move

Continuing our descent into the rabbit hole, ‘Let Me See You Move’ greets us with a haunting, dripping beginning. If a cinematic trailer could play aside this album, this is a track that plays for the true creatures of the night. ‘Let Me See You Move’ is the first track on this EP that was revealed earlier this month, prior to the full album release. The intro leads into a snare of drumline claps and hi-hats that resonate beside orbing synths. There’s an eerie whispering vocal that breathes “I can’t stop” repeatedly over a rolling bassline, manifesting a special kind of discordant symphony. If this album should have an all-star track to it, this would be the one.

4. Fit n Finish

Wrapping up the album, ‘Fit n Finish’ is the last track to MSTRKRFT’s latest offering. It’s the dessert at the end of this four-course meal that MSTRKRFT has cooked up. Going deeper into the depths of this gaping abyss, the intro begins with ingredients being added one after the other. Starting with a pounding techno kick drum, followed by the hi-hats, raucous rising synths, and topped with a heaping sprinkle of acid–this is ‘Fit n Finish.’ It’s the black charcoal activated soft serve ice cream you got instead of the apple pie you didn’t need all along.

Sónar’s Barcelona festival has just announced the lineup’s first phase for their 25th-anniversary show next year, and we are having a hard time not jumping out of our seats. Before the Barcelona dates, which take place on the 14th to the 16th of June, there will also be a Bogota edition on December 2nd, a Reykjavik edition on March 16-17, the second edition in Hong Kong on March 17, and in Istanbul on April 6-7. The Voodoo Music & Arts Experience held annually in New Orleans’ City Park has made an incredible name for themselves curating lineups featuring the best of the best across an expansive number of different genres. 2017, their 19th year, will be no different.

It is extremely heartwarming that in this time of sadness, the music world’s new tastemakers are uniting to continue Prince’s work of promoting individuality and progressive thinking. Coachella, one of the United States’ foremost arts, music, and expression festivals, has actually hosted Prince in the past. It is only fitting that in this time of sadness, some of Coachella’s biggest names are paying tribute to one of the most memorable artists of the modern era.

Jack Ü, an act that is also credited with blurring genre lines, chose to end its set with a massive tribute to Prince.

Another major act that went above and beyond to pay tribute to the musical icon was LCD Soundsystem, who played an emotional rendition of his song “Controversy”.

Prince is so widely appreciated by the musical community due to the fact that he was a truly unique person, on top of being extremely talented. In many ways, he represents certain traits that every artist should strive for. He was a talented multidisciplinary artist, who is credited for shattering racial and gender stereotypes. He is well known for heavily supporting the careers of many female musicians. Prince, a guitar virtuoso, could play percussion, a variety of synthesizers and bass. His use of new age sounds and his willingness to break down barriers, both socially, musically and sexually, has been extremely significant in propelling our society and music industry forward. Prince embodies an era that has since passed, but will never be forgotten because so much of his work has truly inspired the art and music of today.
