Back in May, SoundCloud rocked our world a bit when their then latest app update changed the application icon on our phone’s home screens. It took some time to adjust to the black. There was also a period where it was blue in a collaboration with Billie Eilish!

Now, SoundCloud is now offering users the ability to customize the app logo on their mobile devices (iOS and Android), adding a new layer of personalization to the user experience. Recognizing the strong personal connection users have with the SoundCloud brand, the platform is expanding customization options to reflect individual styles.

Free users can select from the classic SoundCloud logos in orange and black. Meanwhile, Go, Go+, and Next Pro subscribers enjoy a broader range of choices, including seven exclusive new designs: chrome, rose gold, silver, soft purple, hot pink, tie-dye, and leopard. This feature allows users to tailor the app’s appearance to better match their personal preferences and home screen aesthetics.

The update not only enhances visual personalization but also aims to deepen user engagement by allowing a more individualized experience. It reflects SoundCloud’s commitment to making their platform more customizable and connected to their users’ identities. It remains to be seen whether this move will bring users back or be seen as too little too late for the once-beloved streaming site.

SoundCloud is making some changes to the music streaming platform. Introducing a new pay model called “fan-powered royalties,” independent artists will now be paid based on their listeners instead of the number of streams they receive on their music.

The new payout model will put a deeper reliance on an artist’s fanbase. Moreover, instead of focusing on the number of plays an artist receives, SoundCloud will base the pay on listener’s subscriptions or advertising revenue.

The music streaming application made the official announcement on the pay model change on their website. SoundCloud CEO, Michael Weissman spoke about the new payout model.

“Many in the industry have wanted this for years. We are excited to be the ones to bring this to market to better support independent artists,” Weissman said. “SoundCloud is uniquely positioned to offer this transformative new model due to the powerful connection between artists and fans that takes place on our platform.”

He continues, “As the only direct-to-consumer music streaming platform and next-generation artist services company, the launch of fan-powered royalties represents a significant move in SoundCloud’s strategic direction to elevate, grow and create new opportunities directly with independent artists.”

SoundCloud expects fan-powered royalties to help artists create deeper connections with fans. In addition, this new payout method can help to reflect feedback and create transparency for independent artists’ among their fanbase.

Fan-powered royalties will begin to take effect on April 1, 2021. Therefore, to learn more about the new payout model, you can visit SoundCloud’s fan-powered royalties website.

Spotify will be letting their employees continue to work from home indefinitely. Although many renowned companies, such as Facebook, Twitter, and Microsoft, are transitioning back to the workplace setting, it seems that this music streaming platform is embracing remote work for good.

The streaming company is beginning a Work From Anywhere program, allowing employees to work anywhere with a Wi-Fi connection. Those in a location with no Spotify office nearby will receive a co-working space membership.

The decision to work at home or at the office will be entirely up to workers. Once the program begins in the summer, employees will need to speak with their manager to determine when or if they need to visit the office. In addition, they must determine if home locations follow time zone requirements and “regional entity laws.”

Spotify is falling under remote culture, along with other various tech companies who’ve also taken up indefinite work from home. Salesforce recently announced that they will begin allowing their employees to work from home for at least part of the week.

Read more about the Work From Anywhere Program here.

As we reach the end of the decade, there are many things that we have to say goodbye to. Unfortunately, the music streaming service 8tracks has become one of them, as they’ve announced that their journey has reached an end. Widely known as the social network of music streaming, 8tracks is shutting down after 11 memorable years.

Founder David Porter always strived for a “music-oriented social network” in his creation. Before its launch in 2008, Porter stated the program was even in the works during his college days back in 1999.

“To state it simply, we’re shutting down because we can’t generate enough revenue, at our current scale, to cover royalties that continue to increase.”

What exactly made 8tracks different than the streaming services we have today? The name speaks for itself, as the site revolved around music playlists consisting of – you guessed it – 8 tracks. Users were able to easily create and share their own 8-track playlists with one another. This created a simple and fun way to share music with friends and family. During their prime, 8tracks was listed on Time magazine’s 2011 “50 Best Websites” List”.

“… the path to the grave has been well-trodden by many digital music startups these last 20 years.”

In 8tracks’ official blog post, they give a couple of reasons for their decision. First, they admit that they’re unable to generate enough revenue, partially due to “the music industry”. It’s also been reported that the corporation was unable to find another company interested in purchasing them. In all, the competition among streaming services today is intense, and unfortunately the desire for 8-track playlists is not what it used to be.

Those who have 8tracks accounts will apparently not need to worry about losing their playlists forever. In their statement, the company states that users will be able to grab the metadata from their playlists and recreate them on another streaming platform. Do note, the site will be shut down as the clock hits January 1st, 2020.

You can read 8tracks’ full blog post here.

Of the 183 million streaming music, it’s estimated that 125 million are accessing paid music streaming subscription services. However, only 68 million of those streamers are personally paying for the service. YouTube is the most popular streaming service according to the data, leading at 30% of weekly listens. Then follows Spotify at 24%, and Pandora at 17%. What’s interesting is that MusicWatch found Spotify listeners to spend more time on the platform. That in return drives its higher share of listener-ship. As for paid services, Spotify Premium makes up 39% of weekly listening. Apple and Amazon followed behind with 17% each.

With all these major increases within a year, MusicWatch states that there’s still plenty of room to grow, especially in terms of paid subscribers. All of this data is incredible when put into perspective. Just three years ago, streaming and radio were neck to neck. Now, the former takes a comfortable lead according to metrics.

It’s 2016 and internet music streaming has become a well-established industry. If you are of the generation currently enjoying dance music’s rise to the mainstream, then you probably remember the days of Kazaa, Limewire and maybe even Napster. All old file-sharing programs like those are pretty much obsolete by now, as platforms like YouTube and SoundCloud have become the easiest way to instantly access our favorite music.

You can directly correlate the blossoming of the internet with the decline in music album sales. Artists make less an less every year off their album sales, as consumers aren’t buying albums anymore thanks to the internet. Albums are now bought as collectors items for the artwork rather than what they were actually made for, the music. Online streaming has been around for some time and even though websites like YouTube cost nothing to use, other sites have found a business opportunity in charging people to play music through their site, in exchange giving the customer an official release from the artist (the same as an album bought in store). See Beatport, Spotify, TIDAL, Apple and now, Amazon.

With many websites hopping on the streaming bandwagon, it was just a matter of time before web giant Amazon joined in. Today, they officially released their version of an internet streaming service called Amazon Music Unlimited. It has a standard price of $9.99 a month, but $7.99 for Amazon Prime members and $3.99 for owners of the Amazon Echo speaker. They are now competing with Apple Music and Spotify with those prices, so it should be interesting to see how this all grows. The companies are all scrambling to find ways to provide advantages over other providers, as they all are essentially giving the same service for about the same price.
