The production stacks rich bass guitar licks, cosmic synth swooshes, crunchy synth lines, wah-wah guitar riffs, and bright melodic ripples into a rhythm section meant to lift the mood without losing that late-night, lush groove Disco Dom is known for.

Disco Dom first surfaced at EDC Las Vegas in 2021 and picked up momentum with his debut single ‘Be The One’ featuring Yung Bae, followed more recently by a refunk of the Jackson 5’s ‘ABC.’ Between the two, the tracks have combined for roughly 2.52 million and 425,700 streams. Dombresky is currently mid-way through a packed summer and fall touring run, with stops that have included Nocturnal Wonderland, EDC Colombia, BOO Arizona, Day Trip Block Party, Lollapalooza, Hi Ibiza, Ushuaia Ibiza, Ostend Beach Festival, and REALM PDX, alongside an ongoing LIV Las Vegas residency.

He’s also carving out dates specifically under the Disco Dom banner, including La Discotheque showcases at Drumsheds and The Warehouse Project, plus stops at Pacha Ibiza, Club Space, a Boston boat cruise, Elektricity, and Shooters. Upcoming dates include LIV Las Vegas on September 18, Nocturnal Wonderland on September 20, EDC Colombia on October 10, and a Disco Dom set opening for Fisher at Forest Hills Stadium in Brooklyn on October 16, with further stops planned through London, Manchester, Liverpool, and a Heineken Stage appearance at the Formula 1 Las Vegas Grand Prix in November.

Toolroom boss Mark Knight has joined forces with Nick Hurr and Cutty Ranks for their latest dancefloor weapon ‘Bad Man‘, out May 15th across all platforms.

The new track sees the three acts borrowing from the past, and updating legendary House vocals now resting on a powerful, signature bed of percussion, bass, warmth, and short melodies. The result blends that vintage DNA with modern club energy, creating an infectious hook built specifically for packed dancefloors. Pretty much a Mark Knight seal of approval right there.

‘Bad Man’

True to Toolroom’s persona, ‘Bad Man’ centres around crisp percussion, groove, and rolling basslines, topped with vocal energy designed to ignite peak-time moments. Beyond the booth, James has been a dedicated mentor and music educator for over 15 years. Between teaching at institutions as Orbit DJ Retreat in Ibiza and his work as a Native Instruments product specialist. James seeks to inspire the next generation of producers and DJs.

At the heart of his work is RVDIOVCTIVE, the label and brand he co-founded and continues to lead. What began as a New York-based collective has grown into an international community. It is known for curating boundary-pushing releases, immersive club nights, and festivals like Mizata2Ourselves in El Salvador. The album marks a new direction for Starr, highlighting his growth as a producer and artist with a stronger focus on songwriting and collaborative efforts.

Riva Starr is renowned for his energetic DJ sets at major global festivals like Glastonbury and Fuji Rock. His influential label, Snatch!, has hosted stages at Creamfields and Tomorrowland. He’s worked with Horace Andy and Green Velvet, opened for Jamiroquai, and remixed tracks for Wiley and London Grammar. Perhaps you may know him best from his global hit ‘Eat Sleep Rave Repeat‘ with Fatboy Slim. Safe to say, Riva is no stranger to good music.

Keep Me On The Dancefloor

Writer’s Picks

Whenever I do these Writer’s Picks sections, I like to really dive in completely blindly and see what track resonates with me the most upon first listen. I want to highlight that first impression. And this time it’s happened to me with a couple of records. Funnily enough, my favourites are not really tailored for the dancefloor, per se. That said, the one energetic track that won me over was ‘(I’ll Be Your) Paradise‘. What a lovely uplifting tune.

Now, for the two tracks that resonated with me like a glass cup breaking with the right pitch: ‘Only Love‘, featuring the voice of Harry Stone, and the closing track, which is my personal favourite of the entire album, ‘Wildfire‘, featuring Biishop. The former feels like a rainy afternoon drive through the motorway, after a long day of work. It feels like the right track to unwind to. But the latter? Oh, God. It’s a different world altogether. It reminds me of that one Above & Beyond track, ‘Only A Few Things’. They probably share many notes and progressions, but there’s something I cannot put into words that has me in such a peaceful state of mind when I listen to it. It makes me, I don’t know, it takes the weight off my shoulders for a wee second. And I appreciate that feeling. It feels like a reassuring hug. It’s one of those magical tracks you meet by chance.

I love to work on albums like this. I didn’t know what to expect, and I allowed myself to hear, to maybe escape my comfort zone for a little while. I’ve had this LP with me for a couple of months now, and every time I forgot about it, when I came back, it felt as refreshing as the last time. And for some reason I hadn’t got to the final track until just a few days ago. And it marked me. Somehow, I was saving the best for last, and those little surprises of life leave me wondering joyful things. So, huge thank you to the entire team, from the producers, to the singers, to the label, to the team that ultimately got this in my inbox. Thank you.

New. Music. Friday. Here we are once again, ending the week with a hoard of new releases to share. This time, though, we’ve got a very special one to share. I, for sure, have been quite vocal about my initial scepticism about cross-genre productions, unless done right, when they often blow me out of the water. Well, we’ve got such a case today. Enter, Bakermat.

And what’s so special about his latest artist album Grace Note, the fourth instalment of the kind in his career? His sound is often celebrated for its unique approach, a blend of Jazz, Soul, Funk, and Pop interwoven with House elements, and this time, he’s redrawn this pairing: in Grace Note, House meets Gospel.

Grace Note

Comprised of 15 original compositions, Grace Note marries the spiritual core of House music — the genre in which Bakermat has garnered widespread praise for over a decade — and the feelings passed on to church attendees. Bakermat believes there’s a ton in common between these two spaces, and wants to honour the shared sentiments of both. The result is a collection of songs designed to inspire and evoke the same kind of feelings that a standout night at a club, festival, or church can deliver.

From the uplifting vibes of ‘Work It Out’, to the inspirational quotes Ron Carroll delivers in ‘Life’, to the proper movie soundtrack energy of ‘Divine Stuff’, the entire album has an indescribable positive tint attached to it, and doesn’t take the tribute part lightly, as you’ll actually feel a different way once you’re finished with it. You feel, well, refreshed, and happy. To take it to the next level, the LP features the works of Lady Blackbird, Roland Clark, AMANZI, Ann Nesby, and Ron Carroll, who lend their voices for some of the tracks present, alongside Fly Disco Butter, who collaborated on the closing track ‘Your Shine’.

The album title itself, Grace Note, refers to the tiny imperfections in music that add something positive — something innately human — to the composition. This isn’t music made by machines, it’s a deeply personal project that is filled with strings, organs, choirs, speeches, and Bakermat’s beloved brass.

Writer’s Picks

Once again I describe how I work about this section of my album reviews: I dive blindly into the album, while doing something else and having it in the background, until a song resonates with me so much that it takes me out of whatever else I’m doing and drawing my attention towards the music. This happened to me with ‘Without Ya‘.

I can’t really put into words what this track does for me, but what I can describe is that it brings me back to my early childhood when Mum would pick me up from school, she had two Disco CDs she’d often play, and so the strings and the upbeat piano of ‘Without Ya’ fly me back to those moments I cherish so much. As Bakermat metaphorically phrases it, this track doesn’t do much for my entire week, say, but that moment in which it impacts my life, it brings me that good kind of imperfection, in which I have to step away from whatever I’m doing to enjoy the present, aka this track, eyes-closed, and smiling ear to ear.

Even Bakermat himself knows how special the track is, as he tells us, “‘Without Ya’ is a classic feelgood anthem mixing classical instruments and soul vocals with the energy and euphoria of House. I made it at a very happy and special moment in my life and I think you can hear that in the recording. If you’re ever wondering what the Bakermat sound is exactly, this song comes pretty close to incorporating almost all the elements I love. Genre mixing, strong pianos, Disco strings and of course my beloved sax“.

Final Words

It’s part of my essence that I’ll praise albums which have a purpose. We’ve become accustomed to albums being light concepts, where the artist simply compiles songs and that’s it (cue my album editorial from last year), and so having a long-play with an actual theme told throughout its duration, feels wonderful.

Hats off to Bakermat, who was able to put something so beautiful together, and even more hats off (if that’s even a term) for making it convey the very emotions he talks about when referring to the bond between House and church: “euphoria, togetherness, joy, freedom, hope, love, wonder and affection“. That’s pure evidence of his musical artistry.

Summer just got a whole lot cooler. Out today is the unexpected, yet highly successful pairing of Shallou and Night Tales. The three minds have cooked up a Disco House gem titled ‘I Just Wanted to Dance‘, and it is a sneak peek into Shallou’s forthcoming EP, 24, summer. The project will be a retrospective of the music he made this summer, inspired by the feelings of the season.

Hailing from Washington, D.C., and now based in Los Angeles, Shallou has become a Dance luminary. From humble dorm room beginnings, he’s graced stages like Coachella and Lollapalooza, collaborating with artists like Daya, Elderbrook, and Bob Moses. His music is a blend of heart-wrenching vocals and infectious House beats.

Over on the other side of the collab, Night Tales, the duo with a global fanbase, bring a fresh perspective to Electronic music. Their sound has captivated audiences worldwide. After their debut album, Proof, and hits like ‘Only If‘, they’ve headlined festivals, toured Europe, and even made their Coachella debut.

‘I Just Wanted to Dance’

Melting together sonic influences from the 70s with a feel-good, piano-driven bassline, this Disco House anthem invites its audience on an imaginative and exploratory adventure as both artists depart from their signature sound. The track does a great job of pairing yesteryear’s nostalgic sounds with today’s production techniques. Carefree, energetic, and unforgettable. ‘I Just Wanted to Dance‘ is the beginning of what promises to be a hot summer for both artists.

Shallou commented he and Night Tales had met up to brainstorm some ideas. They had created a track that combined their styles well, but with the session winding down, he was tired and unsure if they would produce anything further. However, he started experimenting with piano and gospel vocals, and together they developed a simple drop with vocal chops and House grooves.

“This type of song is a little outside both mine and Night Tales’ wheelhouse, but we are both super influenced by old school house and agreed that this track captures that feeling.”

Whereas Night Tales admit, “We wanted to make a Dance track that would unite people together without the allure of deep, lyric-heavy vocals. Our goal is for listeners to feel the intention immediately, through the sonic atmosphere and instrumentation, allowing themselves to get lost in feeling“.
