Those new regulations would mean that Berlin’s bars, restaurants, and music venues would require proof of vaccination for entry. This system is not new to the world, as other countries already adopted it. Obviously, it is one of the most aggressive steps a city can take to curb a surge in cases caused by the delta variant. In sensitive areas such as nursing homes or day-care centers and schools, employees may also have to show proof of vaccination in the future.

The senator of Economic Affairs, Ramona Pop, commented on the situation. “The trend is heading in this direction. We’re already seeing lawsuits and should rather make regulations ourselves than let ourselves drift”. Only those who received their full vaccinations or gained natural immunity will have the chance to enter those venues in Berlin.

Not so far from Berlin is Hamburg, which implemented similar restrictions at the end of August. However, unvaccinated people are being barred from public venues at the owner’s discretion. If Berlin decides to adopt those regulations, curfews may be dropped, signaling a return to 24/7 nightlife, for vaccinated people.

Speaking to Berliner Zeitung, Thomas Lengfelder, head of the Dehoga restaurant association, gave his opinion. “Freedom of choice is by far the best option. There is no unanimous opinion among us. Social distancing regulations reduce each restaurant’s capacity by 30%.”

Four attendees were hospitalized due to drug and alcohol use, while a man drowned after jumping into a lake and did not come out. Police and firefighters found his body. In addition, local news sources report a baby was born during the event.

According to reports, officials suspect there were over 10,000 attendees at the rave. 2,000 rave-goers have been identified as guests at the event.

Since the end of the event, the area has been “liberated,” as the mayor of Valentano stated. There is no longer anyone at the site.

Attendees spoke about the conditions they witnessed during the event. Many report seeing dehydrated and starved dogs, along with alcohol-induced comas among other ravers.

Illegal Rave Causes COVID-19 and Enviromental Concerns

The Lake Mezzano party is causing concern about the impact it can make on the spread of COVID-19. Alessio D’Amato, Lazio’s regional health counselor commented on the rave.

“The situation is out of control, no negotiation is possible, public order must be restored, people identified and the responsibility for such a gathering must be established,”

European countries have seen an increase in illegal parties since the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic. Although Italy continues to ease health measures and restrictions, nightclubs remain closed over the summer season. Since the decision, there has been a surge in illicit raves.

The Italian government has sought to crack down and prevent illegal events. Mayors in areas such as Sicily and Calabria recently made decisions to ban live concerts and tourist boats.

Along with COVID-19 concerns, environmental organizations have expressed fears of the rave causing severe damage in the Lake Mezzano area.

“The illegal rave party active for days is causing serious damage to the environment and agriculture, there have been six stages erected, some mobile kitchens and thousands of campervans and caravans,” Silvano Olmi, the regional president of Fare Verde said. “What’s more, the loud music and massive presence of people and cars are disturbing the fauna and creating serious problems near the lake.”

The mandate will go into effect on Thursday, August 19 at 11:59 PM, requiring large-gathering attendees to wear facial coverings. However, the only exception to the rule, festival-goers can briefly remove their masks when they are “actively eating or drinking.”

This change comes after L.A. county set mask mandates for indoor spaces, such as gyms and restaurants, on July 17. The guideline was enforced due to the rise of COVID-19 cases and the outbreak of the delta variant.

L.A. county identifies an “outdoor mega-event” as one hosting over 10,000 people in one location. Owners and operators of such happenings must follow the mandate and enforce mask-wear at all times.

The order states individuals in L.A. County must wear a mask “except while eating or drinking, which is the limited time during which the mask can be removed briefly to eat or drink, after which it must be immediately put back on. Patrons, customers or guests must be seated at a table or positioned at a stationary counter, ticketed seat or place while actively eating or drinking indoors, or while actively eating or drinking at an outdoor mega event.”

Ultimately, according to the report, the mask mandate aims to reduce transmission risk of COVID-19 for residents in the area, especially those unvaccinated. This requirement aims to serve people in absence of other protective measures, such as social distancing and capacity limits.

L.A. County COVID-19 Cases On The Rise

Los Angeles county is seeing an increase in daily cases in the area. According to the order, officials are seeing a surge in reports, with 3,810 cases on August 13, 2021 alone. The county reports a 7-day daily average case rate of 29.1 per 100,000 residents.

On Thursday, August 18, the Department of Health released a COVID-19 report update, indicating 34 new deaths and 1,754 hospitalizations. To date, the county has seen a total of 1,359,672 cases since the start of the pandemic.

The entertainment company is implementing a new policy requiring concert-goers and staff to be vaccinated. This new requirement will go into effect on October 1, 2021.

“We have come to the conclusion that, as a market leader, it was up to us to take a real stand on vaccination status,” said Chairman and CEO of AEG Presents Jay Marciano. “Just a few weeks ago, we were optimistic about where our business, and country, were heading. The Delta variant, combined with vaccine hesitancy, is pushing us in the wrong direction again.”

AEG Presents Calls For Vaccinations

AEG Presents is implementing these requirements to encourage festival-goers and music lovers to get vaccinated. In addition, it will help against the fight against the spread and mutation of COVID-19.

“We realize that some people might look at this as a dramatic step, but it’s the right one. We also are aware that there might be some initial pushback, but I’m confident and hopeful that, at the end of the day, we will be on the right side of history and doing what’s best for artists, fans, and live event workers.”

AEG Presents is recognized for partnering with concert promoters, such as Goldenvoice and holding music festivals such as Coachella, Buku, Electric Forest, Second Sky, and more. Earlier this week, the event promoters canceled the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Music Festival due to a surge in COVID-19 cases.

Concert-goers have seven weeks to get vaccinated before the policy goes into full effect. Until October 1, events hosted by AEG Presents will require either proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test.

“Our hope is that our pro-active stance encourages people to do the right thing and get vaccinated,” said Marciano.

Those who do not plan to receive the vaccine will be unable to attend any events held under AEG Presents. Therefore, a refund update will be sent to ticket holders closer to the October date. This will give unvaccinated concert-goers a chance to receive their money back.

AEG Presents’ new policy comes just after events such as Bonnaroo and Summerfest announced their own restrictions. With more events implementing vaccination requirements, it seems the entertainment industry is set on preventing another setback like last year.

The French Senate voted to introduce “health passes” in the country, just after England implemented similar vaccination requirements to its venues. Proof of COVID-19 vaccinations are now permitted for entry into nightclubs until the end of September.

On Monday, July 26, President Emmanuel Macron introduced the guidelines, while encouraging citizens to receive their vaccinations to combat the variant. According to DJMag, 40 million people in France have received the first dose of the vaccine.

Despite the rollout of vaccines, most of Europe is struggling to contain the COVID-19 outbreak. In France alone, there have been over 23,000 new cases as of Saturday, July 24.

The effectiveness of vaccine passports has become a controversial topic as countries seek ways to safely reopen. In March, The Night Time Industries Association (NITA) argued these passes were “unworkable,” just after the UK started concept trials.

Unsurprisingly, the industry revenue is down 39%, with the obvious culprit: Covid-19 and the restrictions that came along with it. The Australian Music industry had a valuation of 1.8 Billion in 2019, and 1.1 Billion in 2020.

People from the land down under will likely not see arena world tours until Mid-2022. Tourism will continue to suffer as Australia remains one of the strictest countries with regards to incoming tourists. Their current regulation requires all visitors submit to a 14-day quarantine.

On the bright side, digital music grew 8.3%, which is a less than last year. Experts suggest is more of a sign of a maturing market, than of complications due to Covid.

Australia is not alone in a world starved of music. The Aussie story is a common one across the global landscape of the music industry. Here’s hoping that music will bounce back, quicker than springy kangaroo.

The Netherlands lifted most COVID-19 measures on June 26. As cases began to decline and most citizens received the first dose of the vaccine, the country attempted a gradual return to normalcy.

However, with the return of bars, clubs, and music festivals, new cases are rising faster than in recent months. On Friday morning, more than 7,000 cases were reported in less than 24-hours.

This week alone, the country has seen a jump in 22,000 cases. Although there is a new surge, The Netherlands has yet to see an increase of COVID-19 patients in hospitals.

Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte is reported to announce the new COVID-19 restrictions during a news conference at 7 PM GMT. According to Broadcaster RTL, cafes and bars will be ordered to close at midnight and events will be hit with a capacity limit.

The Netherlands is known for holding iconic events, especially in the city of Amsterdam. This year, the renowned Amsterdam Dance Event is expected to return for its 25th anniversary on October 13 – 17. If the country sees a decrease in cases in the next coming months, hopefully, the music event can return to its full glory. With just 3 months until the week-long event, anything can happen from this point moving forward.

UPDATE: ID&T and 30 other event promotion organizations have sued the Dutch government over these new restrictions. Full story coming soon.

During a press conference on Monday, July 5th, Tourism minister and government spokesperson Iago Negueruela announced new measures would be implemented in certain areas in Ibiza to contain the spread of the virus. On Sunday, July 4th, officials reported 303 new COVID-19 cases, following 233 new cases the previous day.

According to the latest restrictions, the number of people who can sit at a table in restaurants or bars in Ibiza is limited to ten outdoors and six indoors. In addition, capacity limits have been decreased to 100 people indoors and 200 outdoors. These establishments are required to close no later than 2 AM. Ultimately, stores will not be allowed to sell alcohol any time between 9:30 PM and 8 PM.

The new restrictions come just after the UK government placed Ibizia on its green watch list for travel. In order for citizens to travel to the Balearic Islands, they must have a negative COVID-19 test or proof of vaccination.

The BBC has been told senior ministers have signed off on the decision to delay reopenings and the easing of social distancing. Therefore, capacity limits on clubs, bars, and events will likely remain until July.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson confirmed the setback during a news conference on June 14th at 6 PM BST. The decision will be put to a Commons vote sometime this month.

The UK was set to reach the final stage of reopening on June 21 after months of lockdowns to prevent the further spread of COVID-19. With this announcement, various clubs and venues set plans to reopen on this date.

However, last week, there were reports England would delay the reopening. Calls to move the date have increased due to concerns about the Delta variant in the country. Therefore, pushing back the date can give residents more time to receive the COVID-19 vaccine.

The Night Time Industries Association (NITA) commented on the impact the delay can make on the music sector. NITA CEO, Michael Kill states,

“Distressed industries cannot continue to be held in limbo, as businesses are left to fall, any decision to delay without clarity on when they can open will leave us no other option but to challenge the Government, standing alongside many other industries who have been locked down or restricted from opening for an extreme length of time, through no fault of their own, and at their own cost.”

The Music Venue Trust gave a similar waring about the delay’s potential effects on the nightlife industry.
