]]> The global social media giant TikTok has announced that it is shutting down its separate music app, TikTok Music. The origins of TikTok Music go back to the summer of 2022 when the social media platform had plans to launch its own music streaming app and it had Chinese internet tech company, ByteDance, developing it. ByteDance had already developed an app called Resso, which already launched in India in early 2020, and Resso later changed to TikTok Music in the summer of 2023.

TikTok Music shortly got a ban in India but it still launched in Brazil and Indonesia, and had already expanded into Australia, Mexico, and Singapore as the app invited users in those three countries to participate in a closed beta test. Fast forward to today, TikTok Music announced on its official website that the app will close on November 28th, and they recommended users to transfer their playlists by October 28th (especially to various streaming services such as Spotify and SoundCloud) and request refunds by the expected date the app will close by. When November 28th arrives, everyone’s TikTok Music account information and personal data will receive an automatic deletion.

Ole Obermann, ByteDance Global Head of Music Business Development, Addresses the TikTok Music App Shut Down in Press Statement

“Our ‘Add to Music’ App feature has already enabled hundreds of millions of track saves to playlists on partner music streaming services. We will be closing TikTok Music at the end of November in order to focus on our goal of furthering TikTok’s role in driving even greater music listening and value on music streaming services, for the benefit of artists, songwriters, and the industry”.
