Today is a beautiful day for music, as a whole, not just Dance music. One of the Electronic spectrum’s greatest musicians, known collectively as Above & Beyond, have come together to release their new, gigantic long play, Bigger Than All Of Us. Rocking an impressive 16 tracks and vocal collaborations with their flagship artists, the release contains everything that makes the Above & Beyond sound so unique and hypnotic.

Someone once said Above & Beyond would never make music as magical as they did some odd 15 years ago. Allow me to differ, now that we have an entire album’s worth of proof that the magic that characterises the trio is still there, and quite intact. The flame hasn’t gone out at all. And the story behind the album shows the boys actively seek to continue with the project for many, many years to come.

An Album With Intention And Soul

Far from simply putting many tracks together and calling it an “album”, Above & Beyond are part of that somewhat slim percentage of artists who curate each track as part of a greater story, and weave them in such an order that said story is cohesive and complete. This time, the main message is a heartfelt “Thank you” from the band to its fans, who have contributed to building a community, well, far bigger than they themselves.

Let me elaborate: those who’ve been to an Above & Beyond show, or met people through the Internet with Anjuna in common, know just how supportive, attentive, and warm the community around all things A&B is. So much so, that the official name for their fans is Anjunafamily. And at this point in time, the Anjunafamily is not necessarily a group who treats the trio as their leaders or kings, and it’s instead become a net of company and support, be they involved or not.

That family, not the blood-related one, but rather the one you meet along the way. In my case, it all started in a foreign country, in a new city, while travelling alone, and stumbling upon a tall lad fishing on the shoreline of southern Mar del Plata, Argentina. How? We were wearing matching Above & Beyond tees. And today I’ve got uncountable friends, my personal Anjunafamily. And I bet everyone’s story is as bizarre yet so comforting as mine.

That’s what the album portrays: something so big it’s escaped what Above & Beyond or Anjunabeats/deep/chill was, is, or will ever be. It’s got a life of its own.

Bigger Than All Of Us: 16 Tracks Of Pure Bliss

Seven years after the release of Common Ground, their latest LP, the world was calling for a new work of art from the boys. And they surely delivered. Bigger Than All Of Us was first teased with the news that the band would skip 2024’s ABGT550 milestone celebration, with the promise to focus on production that would be off the charts. Then, last year, Tony McGuinness told us in our exclusive interview with him:

We’re going to be making an album that’s Above & Beyond soon.

And so, the game was on. And for their ABGT600 set, they premiered some tracks, and even the name of the album, without us ever knowing. Some of their most heartfelt creations were scattered around their two-hour set that night in Mexico City, the very songs that would become the most streamed parts of the entire set. They were up a notch when speaking about depth and musical prowess.

Now, imagine an entire album’s worth of these deep and resonant pieces. You’ve got Bigger Than All Of Us, something wonderful, quite on par with the band’s first albums, Tri-State, and Group Therapy.

Through 16 records spanning over 1.1 hours, Above & Beyond reunite with everything that makes their sound as iconic and their meaning as deep as they’re famous for. With songs composed alongside Zoë Johnston, Richard Bedford, and Justine Suissa, the trio expand the legacy these three iconic voices and minds have contributed to the project in its quarter-century-old life. At the same time, works with outstanding artists such as Malou, Victoria Horn, and Opposite the Other, showcase their relentless search for new angles to master. Finally, a very familiar face, Oliver Smith, can be seen collaborating with A&B for the first time. Their partnership as Anjunabeats goes way back, so their joint effort is just another way in which this album represents a thankful, heartfelt tribute to the roads walked to get to where they are right now.

Tri-State And Group Therapy Feels

From the fly-away intro track ‘Stepping In‘, you can just feel the influence of Above & Beyond’s early work. Which is a crazy thing to say, because how on Earth could they be borrowing inspiration from their own discography? Well, I had the feeling, still unfounded, that such was the case. Until a cheeky little interview came out on GRAMMY’s website today. Jono himself comments:

I guess I wasn’t so wrong after all.

The album feels great, sounds great, and pays great homage. And I don’t mean “great” as in “I like it”, I mean it as, “this album is the embodiment of grandiosity”. It smartly looks back a decade and change, and brings back THOSE FEELS you get when listening to the earlier A&B, I swear it does. And it does so with an equally elegant design, a journey of sound that is able to recover the best leads, textures, patterns, and progressions from yesteryear and execute them in a modern, surgical manner.

From tested bangers such as ‘Quicksand‘ and ‘Start A Fire‘, to the nostalgia-filled ‘When You Believe‘, ‘Letting Go‘ and ‘Here Before‘, to the spiritual return of OceanLab in ‘Bigger Than All Of Us‘, to the clever tribute to past albums that is ‘Everywhere I Go‘, to the daring choice of cutting the album in half with a Drum & Bass track ‘Blood From A Stone‘. This album is truly a clever, very clever work of art. And I won’t ever be able to make my words step up to how every corner of it is part of thought process and hours of labour, no matter how hard I try.

Writer’s Picks

That’s a tough question. But I’ve got to marry two consecutive tracks that, for my album listens, I’ll continue to treat as just one: ‘Blood From A Stone‘ featuring Richard Bedford, and ‘Into The Light‘. The choice of Drum & Bass felt somewhat out of place for me at first, but that feeling vanished seconds into my first blind listen. The sheer WARMTH of the track, the chords (which remind me of ‘Choir To The Wild’ by Solomon Grey), Beaky’s on-point vocals, it’s just an amazing track, it’s got power, it’s got feeling, it’s got the Above & Beyond I’ve been listening to for years without having ever been in these BPMs, for God’s sake. It’s Above & Beyond, it’s pure, sincere, nude Above & Beyond. And it only gets better with ‘Into The Light’, elevating you up far beyond the blue sky. If there’s a moment where I broke down in tears, it was right here. The best 7.5 minutes of the album, in my honest opinion.

But I can’t just pick one section and call it a day. The album is full of gems. Among my favourites is ‘When You Believe‘, a gorgeous Progressive Trance track that feels like it’s 2012 all over again, and composed alongside the equally gorgeous Victoria Horn. You may not know her by name, but you’ll recognise the lyrics “I’ve been counting down the days and the nights…“. She wrote that. And for the first time ever, she’s singing her own words in an Above & Beyond production. The two tracks that have made me lose my voice when screaming behind the wheel are ‘Blood From A Stone’ and ‘When You Believe’. Guilty pleasures, much like munching on more chocolate than you should during Easter. I feel pleasantly spoiled.

Shout out to the creative nature of ‘Everywhere I Go‘, which I suspect is built from four different segments from the previous four A&B albums poured into one single track (I’ll ask the boys one of these days), and to the fire lyrical calibre of ‘Bigger Than All Of Us‘. What an incredible way of putting words together. “But it’s a ripple in the fabric we are all connected by“?!. Seriously?! Fire. Fire.

And I could continue describing the tracks one by one, so let’s move on.

(Optional Read) My personal experience upon first listen, as an avid Above & Beyond fan

A Wingless Flight; Pure Auditory Stimuli

When I listened to the album for the first time, I lay in bed with my best pair of headphones on, eyes closed, blindfolded, quite literally. I let myself sink into the music for the entire duration of the journey, from start to finish. And what a journey, truly, wholeheartedly I say so. It’s one of the most beautiful things that I’ve done this year so far. The album is complex, it’s pretty, it tells you a story. It also makes you, in a way, the star of that story, and doesn’t let you go.

Do you know that thing that sometimes happens when you rub your eyes a bit too roughly and you start seeing patterns, hallucinations? That happened to me this time without the need to do anything. It was just auditory stimuli. This album made me feel things that I had never felt before. Or if I had felt them, it was in such a way that does not compare to this particular experience.

Final Words

A&B’s Best In A Decade

And it’s not to look down on previous albums, but the numbers that We Are All We Need did, or the extensive campaign carried out for Common Ground, while fantastic jobs, simply cannot equate to the feelings you get when listening to Bigger Than All Of Us. Objective analysis and solid evidence cannot be compared to the feeling of tearing up from a lone melody, or the goosebumps spreading across your forearms and down your spine when the vocal delivery hits just right.

The way each song is thought out, performed, and even positioned in the album, it all means something. It all has a purpose. The retro synths used in ‘Here Before’, the painfully honest delivery in ‘Lullaby’, the absolute power with which Beaky sings ‘Blood From A Stone’, the OceanLab-esque nature of the title track, the rollercoaster of emotions you go through with the album version of ‘Quicksand’, the 2009-Kaskade-ish character of ‘Letting Go’… man, I could go on for hours.

But at the end of the day, every experience is personal. Huge part of the success and greatness of the story of Above & Beyond is that their melodies, their lyrics, their shows, they all translate into something slightly different for each listener. Every Anjuna fan has a story unique to their life, virtually impossible to replicate by another Anjuna fan, of how and why they arrived here. My story began in 2015, in my former home, and then became something bigger than me five years later, in Buenos Aires and Mar del Plata, Argentina. And I love my story, and I hug it very tightly, and I thank the trio for having changed my life in such a way. For all I know, if it hadn’t been for them and their music, I wouldn’t be here writing this review today.

And I know you have your own story regarding Above & Beyond and Anjuna. And if you don’t, give this album a listen, eyes closed, headphones on, darkness. No distractions at all. And I bet it will be the beginning of something very beautiful. Even, something bigger than you, perhaps.

How The Song Came About

In the studio with Justine Suissa, a foundational Above & Beyond family member, Jono found some chords, “and Justine really liked and connected with them”, he says.“She tends to write pretty fast, and her words come together pretty quickly.”After that initial writing session between Jono and Justine several years ago, the song remained in the vaults as so many do. But when it came time to put together the album, the band fell back in love with it.“It’s a very simple track in terms of its instrumentation, but it’s got quite a lot in it in terms of the arrangement,” says Jono. “It’s got a middle eight section, which is quite common in more classic song structures, and usually doesn’t appear in clubbier tunes.”

“We decided that ‘Bigger Than All Of Us’ would be the title track because we thought it would connect with fans in a sort of classic Above & Beyond sense,” says Jono. “So even though it’s a downtempo song, we wanted to make sure a version of it was in the Coachella set, so we made a club mix for it that ended up being one of the most powerful moments in the set.”

“The Above & Beyond family, the Anjunafamily: it’s bigger than us. It’s the way that our community treats each other and the stories that come out of that,” says Jono.“When we started thinking about calling the album, ‘Bigger Than All Of Us’ I was instantly thinking that that is exactly what’s happening here,” says Paavo.

Alongside the release, Above & Beyond have launched their ‘Bigger Than All Of Us’ gallery, the new home for memory sharing, storytelling, and celebrating the impact of Above & Beyond’s music and the Anjunafamily community. The website launches alongside the ‘Bigger Than All Of Us’ single release, ahead of the album’s full release next month.

To celebrate the album release, Above & Beyond will embark on a 13-date amphitheater tour across North America, beginning August 15 in Vancouver and concluding October 4 at Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, CA. It’s no surprise that Above & Beyond‘s ABGT600 set was full of IDs, some we had been hearing for a while, and others which had their premiere at that very stage in Mexico City. The boys didn’t take too long to start releasing some of these goodies, luckily for us. And the first one to see the light of day is ‘React‘, out today.

Rinsed across the globe over the last months, ‘React’ is not only the first song of them to be released since ABGT600, but it’s also the first single of a new Tranquility Base EP, much like the one we got last year, and whose focal point was experimenting with sounds resemblant to their old, legendary alias, Tranquility Base.

‘React’ is the first of five singles which will make up the Tranquility Base Vol. 2 EP, to come out on December 6th. Its predecessor, Vol. 1, peaked in the #1 slot on Beatport’s Techno releases chart, with singles ‘Angry JP8’ and ‘500’ hitting Beatport Trance #1. We can certainly expect some interesting things with this new offering.

Woven together by yesteryear synths processed in a modern style, the first seconds of the drop actually remind us of Andrew Bayer’s remix of Push’s classic ‘Strange World’, and then the song takes on a life of its own, tinting detuned supersaws over moogish basslines. The break sees listeners go through a substantial tempo change, for what feels like 108 BPM, to then go back to the energy of the first drop, while carrying the melody of the break.

To Above & Beyond fans and followers, it’s no news that their milestone show celebrating the 600th episode of their Group Therapy radioshow, ABGT600, happened last week. And, as they always do, the first set to be performed is their very own hourlong film of a deep set. That video is out now for the world to see.

This year, ABGT arrived in Mexico City for a two-show weekender which included sets from Kasablanca, Alex Sonata & TheRio, Qrion, DURANTE, and many more. And Above & Beyond’s classic Deep Set took place in one of the most beautiful landscapes the Mexican capital has to offer: Xochimilco.

Xochimilco, the last vestige of an extensive water transport network constructed by the Aztecs, offers a unique experience. Colourful, gondola-like boats ferry visitors through the canals, while food vendors, artisans, and mariachi bands float by, creating a lively atmosphere. This Deep Set had the trio sailing through these canals, accompanied by a number of boats apart from theirs, with many friends and Anjunfamily HQ members. It’s beautiful.

The Set

Their hourlong trip offers an insight into the future of Anjunadeep, and the softest bits of Anjunabeats too. The boys played everything from a new Tim Green respray of their 2019 Flow State record ‘Homecoming’, Marsh and Volen Sentir’s new collaboration ‘Ascension’ — which just came out today —, PROFF’s incredible ‘Love On A Real Train’ retouch, and even a reimagination of the Orbital classic ‘Halcyon On and On’.

The bond between Above & Beyond and Anjunadeep goes a long way into the past, for those who are not aware. Initially born as a place to showcase the music they thought unfitting for the early days of Anjunabeats, the label has grown to become one of the leading houses of the deeper sounds of Electronic music. The bond is even stronger as we notice one of its heads, James Grant, has been managing the Above & Beyond brand from the very start.

Anjunadeep has famously launched an endless list of artists to the stratosphere ever since its conception. Names such as Boom Jinx, Michael Cassette, Jaytech, Andrew Bayer, PROFF, and 16BL (formerly 16 Bit Lolitas) were all part of the older generation of Anjunadeep cadets, while other names which are currently rocking the Deep and Melodic House scene also came from the later twelve years of it. See how many of these names you know: Lane 8, Yotto, Marsh, Ben Böhmer, Cubicolor, Spencer Brown, Tinlicker. Breathtaking, right?

As you can see, Anjunadeep has blossomed into an incredible amount of legendary artists, and it’s impossible to compile the best of their catalogue into one mix. BUT, our favourite British trio is giving it a go anyway.

Above & Beyond, The Anjunadeep Edition 500

Celebrating 500 episodes of the weekly radioshow The Anjunadeep Edition, which welcomes artists all over the world to play an hourlong mix of the best they have, the band, comprised of Tony McGuinness, Jono Grant, and Paavo Siljamäki, will take good care of the decks on this week’s broadcast. This year marks the tenth anniversary of the show being regularly on air. Actually, the episode, as a sort of majestic coincidence, will be streamed exactly 10 years to the day from the first-ever episode. Neat.

This news comes in really handy for all of those looking to be in London this summer for the imprint’s Open Air show return to Finsbury Park, since A&B announced not long ago they’ll be closing the day with a Deep set they’ve been preparing. We’re eagerly awaiting that day to read the tone of the set. Will it premiere any new Fingerprint or P.O.S IDs? There’s a collab lying around between Paavo and Fadi from Aly & Fila, maybe it’s a good place and time to play it…

Human consumption of food, resources and technology contribute to escalating global temperatures and unpredictable weather systems. We envision a future where all of us are more mindful of the environmental impact of our actions to mitigate this effect wherever possible – and adjust our actions to reduce those impacts. On our part, we want to continue to run our business – creating community and life-affirming experiences through music, as well as supporting the livelihood of our artists and employees  – but with an increased focus on lowered emissions, waste reduction, resource conservation, and improved procurement and sourcing. 

Greenhouse gas emissions are rapidly heating the planet and consequently affect the health of our environment. The Paris Agreement set out the goal to limit global average temperature rise to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels. In response, many companies have made net zero pledges to reduce emissions by a minimum of 90% by 2050. Reaching this target requires radical business transformation and collective action on an unprecedented scale.

Given how urgently we all need to address the climate crisis, we aim to reduce emissions by 50% from our business activities as quickly as possible within the next 5-10 years. We’re building a roadmap for how to do this, and we look forward to sharing more with you soon.”

Lots of beautiful things happened during this year’s EDC Las Vegas. One of them, one may argue, was Jono and Paavo featuring a 90-minute-long set at the Circuit Grounds stage. The set portrays A&B’s current Progressive Trance, Techno and Older-Trance-Reimagined sound, with tons of infectious beats all throughout the night. Above & Beyond’s EDC goes, quite literally, above and beyond.

Put on your best pair of headphones, or turn your speakers up a bit louder than usual — you’re going to need that extra power. Among the tracks played that night, stand fragments from Above & Beyond’s latest Tranquility Base Vol. 1 EP, Myon‘s remix of JODA‘s ‘Breaking Down Walls‘, a couple of very tasty IDs (one rumoured to be either A&B or Alex Sonata & TheRio, other thought to be an Andrew Bayer, Gabriel & Dresden, and Sub Teal collab, and the other a new A&B x Seven Lions work), their future classic ‘Crazy Love‘ featuring Zoë Johnston, and so much more.

Happy release day everyone! Happy release Above & Beyond, too. At last, their highly anticipated Tranquility Base Vol. 1 EP has seen the light of day, which means we get to enjoy their five new tracks, in full, and on all platforms. No more ABGT500 ID ripping, yo.

The first product of their extra time in the studio, Tranquility Base Vol. 1 comes as a collection of heavy-hitting club records, all calling back to their instrumental roots. These tracks have been played around the world ever since their Los Angeles Group Therapy milestone show, and, until yesterday, two singles had seen the light of day: ‘Angry JP8‘, and ‘500‘. The other three have just seen their official release today.

Tranquility Base Vol. 1

The name of the EP series references A&B’s beloved Tranquility Base alias, a staple of the noughties Trance sound, with tracks like ‘Oceanic‘, ‘Razorfish‘, and more. The collection released today features an entire range of techniques and feelings portrayed, from absolutely moving melodies, to uplifting progressions, to dark Techno vibes.

You, yes, you, Anjunafamily member, I’m talking to you. There’s no better way to cut the week than anything Anjunabeats related. Much more so if the news — and the music — come from masters Above & Beyond. We all know them, we all love them. Tony, Jono, and Paavo have been treating us with their music for years now. But that doesn’t mean it’s over yet.

As recently announced by the trio themselves, a new EP is on its way. Titled the Tranquility Base Vol. 1, it will be a release of five instrumentals honouring their legendary alias Tranquility Base, with which they released some pretty heavy tracks back in the day: ‘Oceanic‘, ‘Razorfish‘, ‘Getting Away‘, ‘Surrender‘, and ‘Buzz‘.

Today, Above & Beyond are lifting their second single from the EP, simply titled ‘500‘. The full EP will come out on May 25th. Recently-released ‘Angry JP8‘ and, of course, ‘500’, will be a part of the five-track pack.

In the same way the quieter moments on our albums have always been a major part of Above & Beyond, the bigger dancefloor moments have also been a hallmark of our sound.

‘500’

The second track off the forthcoming EP, ‘500’, was written especially for its debut in Los Angeles, as part of the 500th episode of Above & Beyond’s weekly radioshow Group Therapy. Since then, the track has been spun ’round the world gig after gig, including, but not limited to, their Buenos Aires return, and their sold-out Printworks London takeover in April, as part of the iconic venue’s closing season.

This song starts with a plucky melody, coming from a sound that’s so reminiscent of their iconic ‘Red Rocks’ tune. Heavy bass is quick to look the part for the banging drop that gives ‘500’ a piercing character. As it is very welcome from A&B, the break features a proper trancey, airy, open atmosphere, with a little piano making you fly over the pads.

Fear not, though, the arpeggiated main melody comes right in, cutting through the openness of the first half of the break. A fast and intense buildup brings all the tension for the drop about to come, and the latter turns into a mix of both worlds, keeping the tension while opening the plucked arpeggio and turning into a sought-after trancey saw-wave lead. You don’t want to miss out on this one.
