Due to COVID-19, a majority of live events have either been canceled or pushed back to 2021. While disappointed, ticket holders must decide on whether to keep or receive a refund for their tickets. In some cases, fans are stuck with their tickets, unable to receive a refund for an event they can no longer attend. According to a report by Which?, several customers who bought tickets from ticket exchange and resale company Viagogo, are unable to receive refunds.

“Tickets for these particular events carry over and are valid for the event in 2021, so as per our terms and conditions the customer is not entitled to a refund in this situation.”

According to Viagogo’s website, customers are only allowed a refund on their order if an event is canceled. If the event is postponed, they’re out of luck. On the other hand, Which? has reported that they’ve spoken to customers who have been denied refunds for canceled events. Additionally, customers are unable to receive a refund for an event canceled and moved to a later date. This becomes a large issue as many ticket-holders are now stuck with tickets to an event they can no longer attend.

As an example, Which? explained the headache one customer is currently facing. Melissa Taylor bought tickets to this year’s Wireless Festival in London but unfortunately, the event was canceled. Melissa tried to get a refund but Viagogo claims the tickets are still good and will remain active for next year’s event. She should be able to receive a refund as technically, the event she paid for is canceled. Nonetheless, this is just one of many similar cases that people have found themselves in.

Viagogo’s Response

Recently, Viagogo has reportedly added a new COVID-19 policy to its website. Most notable, it states that “If the event is postponed… The tickets are usually valid for the new date.” A Viagogo representative has also stated that customers cannot receive refunds for rescheduled events because these tickets carry over. As a result, if tickets to a canceled event are transferable to a later date, the event is technically not canceled at all. Customers are then forced to take a loss or try to sell their tickets on Viagogo.

We understand that everyone is taking a financial hit due to the vast amount of canceled events. Still, it only seems fair that buyers have the option of a refund in this difficult time.

viagogo took to purchasing the online ticket exchange platform, StubHub, from eBay with a 4 billion dollar deal. With this move, viagogo acquired one of their strongest competitors, and as a result, actively united the two companies. Upon announcement, the interim chief executive officer of eBay, Scott Schenkel spoke out on the driving force behind the decision.

“We believe this transaction is a great outcome and maximizes long-term value for eBay shareholders. Over the past several months, eBay’s leadership team and Board of Directors have been engaged in a thorough review of our current strategies and portfolio, and we concluded that this was the best path forward for both eBay and StubHub. We firmly believe in the StubHub business and we are excited about its future growth potential with viagogo as its owner.”

Notably, the deal is due to close by the end of the first quarter of 2020. This decision will allow viagogo’s founder, Eric Baker, to return to the company he co-founded in business school – StubHub.

“It has long been my wish to unite the two companies. I am so proud of how StubHub has grown over the years and excited about the possibilities for our shared future. Buyers will have a wider choice of tickets, and sellers will have a wider network of buyers. Bringing these two companies together creates a win-win for fans – more choice and better pricing.”

Finally, it will be interesting to watch how viagogo shapes up against competition. Overall, the move will bring a significant potential for expanding, allowing viagogo a larger share in the ticket resale marketplace.

Have you recently used Viagogo to purchase upcoming event tickets? The ticketing site may be more difficult to access, now that Google has suspended them from placing online advertisements. Viagogo was founded back in 2006 in London and is widely popular for those to buy and sell entertainment tickets.

In the past months, the site has been accused of deceptive sale tactics. Last year, the Guardian performed an undercover investigation on Viagogo, revealing several surprising actions. In their investigation, it’s reported that Viagogo had been ‘profiteering’ from charity events and ‘colluding with professional touts’. With this in mind, Google stepped in to protect users and show their disapproval with the sites’ actions.

“When people use our platform for help in purchasing tickets, we want to make sure that they have an experience they can trust”

As of now, Viagogo will not be listed first on Google when fans search for live event tickets. Additionally, Google will no longer take money from the event site, now that they may not purchase advertisements. Viagogo was surprised by Google’s actions, stating “We are confident that there has been no breach of Google’s policies…” Unfortunately for Viagogo, Google is the least of their concerns moving forward.

It’s reported that the Competition and Market Authority (CMA), will be taking Viagogo to court, due to multiple warnings ignored to follow consumer law. The CMA has known of Viagogo’s deceptive practices for some time now, likely piling up evidence for a court appearance. For now, users can avoid this whole mess by sticking to other ticketing companies like StubHub and Ticketmaster.

Following a pandemonium-packed three days, seeing the likes of electronic music titans such as David Guetta, Armin van Burren, and Alesso, viagogo, the world’s largest ticket marketplace, reports a hefty boost in ticket demand. With Boom, Belgium gearing up for another mind blowing weekend, traffic on viagogo’s website has ramped up, seeing a 317% increase in demand for tickets, as hundreds of thousands of fans scramble to secure their place on the festival grounds. With a nearly identical lineup to last weekend, Tomorrowland demonstrates its ability to expand upon their events without sacrificing demand. Viagogo also reports that over 200,000 attendees are making their trip to Boom this year, displaying the willingness of fans all around the world to travel overseas to see shows and sporting events of this magnitude. Just look at this year’s World Cup. Brazil saw an unprecedented number of fans hailing from all different countries around the world, just to be a part of the worldwide spectacle. Tomorrowland is no different. Although Tomorrowland is comfortably atop the list in terms of ticket demand for international festivals, similar events have seen rises in demand as well. Below you can peruse the viagogo’s Top 10 International Festivals, ordered by demand:
