Similar to Austin’s SXSW festivities, the London version will follow the same format with keynote speakers, musical performances, and a showcase of leading innovations in tech, gaming, and film. Lineup and further details are said to come in the next few months.

About SXSW

SXSW first debuted in Austin, Texas in 1987, and has since grown to become one of the biggest events of the year, bringing in hundreds of thousands of musicians, creatives, filmmakers, media companies, and music industry executives every March. Previous musicians to have graced the SXSW stages include Amy Winehouse, Billie Eilish, Duo Lipa, Ed Sheeran, Stormzy, and many more. Guest speakers over the years have included Dave Grohl, Barack Obama, Steven Spielberg, Michelle Yeoh, and Mark Zuckerberg, to name a few. Additionally, previous SXSW events have helped tech start-ups become global phenomenons, famously including Twitter, Foursquare, and Airbnb.

Global Rollout

The inaugural SXSW London marks the first European event amidst a global rollout that began in 2023. The first international event took place in Sydney, Australia, which is already gearing up for its second edition this October 14th-20th, 2024. SXSW Sydney, SXSW London, and the main SXSW conference and festival in the U.S. will make the event series “an indispensable three-stop tour for the global creative community,” said organizers in a press release. 

Further Details

While details are still yet to be revealed for SXSW London, organizers said the event will be held across dozens of venues, art galleries, and clubs in the East London district of Shoreditch and will have its own “distinctive personality,” to reflect the city’s vibrant culture.

The conference will also include innovative visual arts, design, and fashion programming, featuring exhibitions and interactive and immersive experiences across East London. The city’s proximity to other major creative and tech hubs in Europe will also shape programming as organizers look to attract creative talent from across the continent.

Set to take place at Moody Amphitheater at Waterloo Park, Billboard Presents THE STAGE at SXSW will be headlined by rapper Lil Yachty on March 16th, Latin artists Feid and Eladio Carrion on March 17th, and Kx5–the collaborative project from Kaskade and deadmau5 on March 18th. The concert series will also feature opening performances by Lola Brooke and Armani White.

In addition to performances, several artists will also host conversations at The Billboard House, with official speakers to be announced in the coming weeks. Taking place Friday, March 17th, the interactive content house will also feature brand activations, photo opportunities, small bites and cocktails, and more. Entry is on a first-come first-serve basis, with a reserved amount of spaces available exclusively to SXSW Music and Platinum Badge holders and SXSW Music Festival wristband holders.

SXSW was scheduled to start this weekend from March 13th – 22nd until a press conference was held with Austin Mayor Steve Adler. He stated that if it continued to move forward, it would cause a local disaster. Many popular platforms such as Facebook and Twitter were also dropping out of the conference already due to coronavirus concerns; certainly, the festival’s cancellation was inevitable. Unfortunately, This is the first time in 34 years that the conference will not take place.

SXSW is known to be a great platform for emerging artists looking for fan and industry exposure. Not only this, but it also provided them with great networking opportunities with many popular members of the music business. According to Billboard, many of the artists, managers, and publicists they have spoken to say that many of their tours, album releases, and marketing campaigns were designed around the conference. Many of them, unfortunately, don’t have any other events lined up since it was expected that SXSW would be happening.

Currently, artists and their teams are struggling to reroute tours and seek refunds on travel and hotels. In addition, the SXSW cancellation also means that they will not be getting paid. Many artists were counting on the festival to receive some income from the event. Now they are at risk for not getting paid at all if they are unable to find other events to participate in.

SXSW Cancellation May Cause a Business Disaster

Certainly, the festival’s cancellation isn’t just bad news for artists. According to Music Business Worldwide, SXSW may be facing a potential business disaster. Co-founder, Nick Barbaro, confirmed that the huge festival conference does not have cover for cancellation insurance due to the coronavirus outbreak. Co-founder and Managing Director, Ronald Swenson, shared that the event has lots of insurance; however, they do not have coverage for infections, diseases, viruses, and pandemics.

SXSW organizers are currently exploring options for a possible postponement for the event. According to a statement provided by the conference: “We are exploring options to reschedule the event and are working to provide a virtual SXSW online experience as soon as possible for 2020 participants, starting with SXSW EDU.” They continue, “We understand the gravity of [this] situation for all the creatives who utilize SXSW to accelerate their careers; for the global businesses; and for Austin and the hundreds of small businesses – venues, theatres, vendors, production companies, service industry staff, and other partners that rely so heavily on the increased business that SXSW attracts.”

An interesting turn of events that still goes to show that while Austin maybe the championed city of the southern United States for “keeping it weird”, it seems they still have a while to go when it comes to international issues. Yesterday, Felix Walworth of the bands Told Slant, Eskimeaux, and Bellows came forth to the internet and tweeted a photo of their South by Southwest contract and found a surprising deportation clause in the fine print.

Upon further investigation, the contract reveals SXSW’s intentions of stopping non-sanctioned events and performances by stating that they will “notify the appropriate U.S. Immigration authorities of the above actions,” and that by “accepting and performing at any non-sanctioned events may result in immediate deportation, revoked passport, and denied entry by US Customs Border Patrol at US points of entry.”

To make the trip worth while for many international artists and bands, they will often play multiple gigs a day alongside the official events they have been booked to maximize the exposure received during their stay in Austin. These unofficial day parties and showcases aren’t a new concept and have been nothing short of commonplace at the massive nearly two-week long festival for quite some time now. There are however, repercussions for violations of the stated policies above for artists residing in the United States such as canceled hotels and revoked SXSW badges but those are minuscule in nature comparatively so to their international counterparts; putting the artists’ careers at risk and even worse, impacting their possible return to the United States.

Amidst this new development, SXSW has already been showing support for artists targeted by the crackdown by throwing an official showcase to feature artists affected by the recent halt of visitors from seven primarily Muslim countries called Contrabanned: #MusicUnites. Along with the musical portion, panels have been set up in order to shed light on the topic.

Managing director of South by Southwest Roland Swenson made an unofficial comment Thursday afternoon towards Slant’s call for boycott and cancellation during an interview with Austin 360 which states that the post on Twitter comes from “two different parts of the artist agreement” that were joined together in order to paint “a much worse impression than what is real.” This was countered and later clarified by Swenson that the two sections did appear in sequence on SXSW’s invitation letter but in fact, the language does appear in two different places on the official artist agreement provided by SXSW. He was also quoted saying “if somebody did something really horrific, like disobey rules about pyrotechnics, starting a brawl, or if they killed somebody” was when the harshest penalties threatened in the contract would be applied.

Swenson’s official statement:

SXSW has been vocal in its opposition to President Trump’s Travel Ban and is working hard to build a coalition of attorneys to assist artists with issues at U.S. ports of entry during the event. We have artists from 62 countries from around the world performing and have always supported our international music community. We have never reported international showcasing artists to immigration authorities.

We were sorry to learn that one of our invited performers chose to cancel his performance at this year’s SXSW Music Festival due to a misunderstanding of our policies regarding international artists.

We understand that given the current political climate surrounding immigration, the language that was published seems strong. Violating U.S. immigration law has always carried potentially severe consequences, and we would be remiss not to warn our participating acts of the likely repercussions.

Language governing SXSW’s ability to protect a showcase has been in the artist Performance Agreement for many years. It is, and always was intended to be, a safeguard to provide SXSW with a means to respond to an act that does something truly egregious, such as disobeying our rules about pyrotechnics on stage, starting a brawl in a club, or causing serious safety issues.

The SXSW Performance Agreement states:

If SXSW determines, in its sole discretion, that Artist or its representatives have acted in ways that adversely affect the viability of Artist’s official SXSW showcase, the following actions are available to SXSW:○ Artist will be removed from their official SXSW showcase and, at SXSW’s sole option, replaced.○ Any hotels booked via SXSW Housing will be canceled.○ Artist’s credentials will be canceled.○ SXSW will notify the appropriate U.S. immigration authorities of the above actions.

We hope never to be put in the position to act on this. Indeed, we spend a great deal of time communicating with international artists concerning numerous issues, including how to avoid issues at U.S. ports of entry.

Moreover, there is language in the Performance Agreement which is included to inform foreign artists that the U.S. immigration authorities have mechanisms to create trouble for artists who ignore U.S. immigration laws. For example, those acts coming to SXSW to perform without a work visa are limited, by U.S. immigration law, to performing their showcase event only. If an artist wishes to perform elsewhere, they will require a work visa.

As such, both to protect SXSW and the interests of all the participating artists, we long ago added this language to our Performance Agreement:1.4. Foreign Artists entering the country through the Visa Waiver Program (VWP), B visa or any non-work visa may not perform at any public or unofficial shows, DAY OR NIGHT, in Austin from March 10-19, 2017. Accepting and performing at unofficial events (including unofficial events aside from SXSW Music dates during their visit to the United States) may result in immediate deportation, revoked passport and denied entry by US Customs Border Patrol at US ports of entry. Gallant has come a long way since the 2014 self-release of his first EP, Zebra. In the past two years, the Maryland singer has toured with Sufjan Stevens, recorded with Zhu and Jhene Aiko, and released a full length album, Ology.

To support Ology, Gallant embarked on his headlining tour at the end of August, and is still in the midst of touring now. The North American tour will finish up in November and lead into a series of international cities, all of which I’m sure will be stoked to see the soulful singer.

But if this timeline isn’t impressive enough for you, check this out – Gallant spent his Monday singing at The White House.

Earlier this week, the singer posted a Facebook video with the caption, “thanks Barack Obama and Michelle Obama for letting me sing at ur (sic) house.” His performance was part of South By South Lawn, Obama’s spin-off of SXSW, and featured a medley of his tracks “Skipping Stones,” “Bone + Tissue,” “Bourbon,” and “Jupiter.”

As this was my first year with this conference, it was almost overwhelming. With the amount of shows going on at any given second, it was hard to know where to put the time and get the most out of one hell of a week. But I quickly got my bearings, and made sure to stop by some of the best parties in Austin. While it may have been tough to decide who threw the best shows, we did our best to highlight some of the truly spectacular moments of SXSW 2016.

SXSW 2016 – March 15th:

For one of the first nights of the music portion of the conference, there was no better way to kick off the week than at the Jukely host. Hosted at Empire Garage, which saw a handful of other amazing concerts throughout the week, Jukely brought in some talent. While all the artists put on quite a show, Keys N Krates along with Break Science stole the night for those who had the stamina to stay as late as the show went. This showcase held an eclectic range of music and it all was just different enough to keep you on your toes and ready for the next act to play.

SXSW 2016 – March 16th:

Ultra Music has always been a leading name in the dance music world, so it is a no brainer that they brought out all the big guns for their SXSW showcase. We walked in just in time to hear Bearson drop his new single, “Want You“, and just hearing that made you know you were in the right place that night. Other acts like Chris Malinchak and Steve James did their magic on stage as well, all leading up to Louis the Child throwing down one of the meanest sets of the week. If you weren’t here at this show, you dropped the ball hard that night.

SXSW 2016 – March 17th:

While many people I ran into said that this was a lull in the week in terms of music, I couldn’t disagree more. Audiophile Records held a gnarly house show, and any night owls who staggered into New York New York that night beheld the magic of what happens when Virginia-based company, The Bassment , and Austin’s DEAF team up to throw one hell of a show. While this show was an unofficial showcase, these guys cut no corners by bringing in some of the best talent in bass music. They artists kept the walls rocking until 5am, and if was one of the rowdiest shows of the week. If you were one of the many who passed out early on the 17th, than you are the definition of “Snoozing and Loosing”. DEAF Productions and the Bassment sure know how to throw a party.

SXSW 2016 – March 18th:

By this late in the week, many of us were pretty exhausted. So on that note, there was no better way to unwind that hitting up one of the many day parties being held by Pitchfork. Held at Austin’s Barracuda, they brought in a wide range of acts that made an amazing afternoon that quickly turned into an amazing evening.

It is safe to say that SXSW 2016 was a success. With so many shows going on, many of them free or unofficial, it was hard to keep up with everything. Let us know if you were around at SXSW and we happened to miss some of your favorite shows throughout the week!

As electronic music fans, sometimes it feels like all we talk about is music festivals. From lineups to locations to ticket prices to preparation and anticipation leading up to an event, as soon as one festival is over we begin talking about planning for the next year. Our love for music festivals is justified though: it’s nearly impossible to replicate the feelings of liberation, euphoria and community in any other environment.

For those with festival-fever, you’re not alone.  The numbers prove that today’s audiences are increasingly festival-oriented and the number of music festivals in North America has grown exponentially.  To reflect the immense popularity of these mass-scale events, Eventbrite released a study revealing the most buzzworthy music festivals.  By monitoring and measuring social media conversations about music festivals, the study quantifies who is talking about what festivals and where as well as general trends about social media engagement with the music festival scene.

In the 2013-2014 festival season, the most discussed music festivals in the US were: Bonnaroo, Buku Music + Art Project, Brooklyn Hip Hop, Burning Man, Coachella, Electric Daisy Carnival, Electric Zoo, Forecastle, Gathering of the Juggalos, Governors Ball, Gulf Coast Jam, Hangout, Hard Summer, iHeartRadio, Lollapalooza, Moogfest, Mysteryland, Pitchfork, South by Southwest’s music component, Spring Awakening, Sun City, Sunfest, TomorrowWorld, Ultra, and Warped Tour.  The majority of conversations revolved around the festival experience, rather than specific artists.  In addition, festivals have a huge ability to engage fans that don’t actually attend the event, through live streams and social media posts from attendees; according to the study, “23% of conversation (approximately 5 million posts) came from people who were participating in the festival remotely.”

This week at the annual South by SouthWest festival, a new study has been released that is giving great insight to the social media behavior of EDM fans. Conducted for the year of 2013, more than 70 million posts regarding EDM were reviewed. Eventbrite, an online ticket service that caters to the needs of event organizers and promotors, conducted the study in partnership with Mashwork, a firm specializing in social media analysis. Together, they have provided us with great information regarding EDM and how the heightened social network activity related to the genre has affected its booming business.

Along with interesting facts and statistics for fans to review, this research will benefit many brands looking to take advantage of the industry. After all, we are living in an extremely visual society today. According to the study, “brands that emphasize visual trends in their marketing and on their social channels can leverage this behavior to drive greater engagement with EDM Fans.”

Tragedy struck SXSW Music Festival early Thursday morning at approximately 12:30 AM when a vehicle hit and killed two innocent bystanders and injured an additional 23. The accident happened on Red River Street and East 10th Street near a few nightclubs in Austin, Texas where the annual music, film, and interactive conference and festival takes place every year. The driver -who has since been taken into custody- evaded a DUI checkpoint and attempted to escape at high speeds. Consequently, the man struck and killed a couple on a moped before driving through a barricade and into the crowd of attendees. After the accident, the man fled from his car and attempted to escape — but was quickly taken down with shock guns. The man now faces two counts of capital murder.
