The bassline is downtempo, but drums through the entire melodic piece. The vocals by Cayson Renshaw this time sing softly as you feel it wrap around you like a blanket. The soundscape is quiet and emotional. We’ve got the soft trance-like vocal and guitar strumming melody coupled together to give you a new look. It finishes and fades away slowly for a dramatic, but effective close. A key feature of any Ryan Raddon track is his musicality precision. Whether they make you jump up and down like ‘Jorts FTW’ or keep you swaying side to side like Redux, it’s another standout production for the books.

A good artist will reflect in the changing world and evolve with their music as they grow in turn. Kaskade has shown us this with his Fire & Ice album, and his Redux sets. The man has versatility, a plucky midwestern panache, and he’s not afraid to stick a big middle finger up to DJMag either. 

Kaskade played EDC in Las Vegas last weekend and shocked everyone by playing a set unlike any he has played before. The set still features mashups of his timeless lyrics, but set against artists like Charlotte de Witte, Enrico Sangiuliano, Hi-LO, and Artbat. The set, which digs more into the classic definition of Techno and House, is available as a rip on YouTube. Before his birthday, Cuessy found out he was cancer free! Amidst that celebration, his birthday, January 31, arrived.  Sean Guarino, owner of Sexy Lites, and Tim Brennan, Vice President of PRG, personally drove to Cuessy’s home.  They delivered all the tech needed for his imminent backyard party!

Kaskade heard about Cuessy’s plan to open for him, so he insisted on a B2B. “Kaskade walked into my backyard, said hi to me, and asked if I was ready for a little back-to-back action.”  Kaskade played B2B with him for 30 minutes, then took over for a solo set.

“If I could hang out with my fans on this small of a scale every day I would. Getting to know Efrain and his story was such an inspiration for me. It was an automatic ‘Yes’ when I heard that he wanted me to play his 18th birthday party in his backyard.”

I’m not a numbers guy. I live for music, I might even choose to die by music, were that possible. But sometimes numbers paint a picture so let’s get smart for one second.

Today an article surfaced in the LA Times, AGAIN, saying the sky is falling because of raves. Its headline screams a salacious “After a summer of deaths, popular Halloween rave won’t be held”.

Really. A summer of deaths. Really.

In a recent previous article, LA Times states, “There have now been at least 21 confirmed drug-related deaths among people who went to raves nationwide by Los Angeles-area companies since 2006.” As a lover of dance music, a friend, a brother, a son, a husband, and a father, even ONE death strikes me down.

But let’s not pretend this is an isolated problem, something unique to dance music culture. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, every day in America 27 (TWENTY-SEVEN!) people die as a result of drunk driving crashes.

That’s more than one person, per hour, every single day.

So, in the past 10 years there have been 21 substance-related deaths at dance events. And EVERY DAY there are 27 substance-related deaths, which are somehow less news and attention worthy. I suppose once you reach a certain point, the news doesn’t notice anymore.

I’m happy to tackle substance abuse. I’m happy to use my influence to encourage people to be responsible, to stay alive. But this is a world-wide problem, something that is not even close to being unique to dance music. Part of the problem is people trying to simple-size it. Raves = drugs. So close them down.

Not going to work, and we all know it. Time to devote your column inches to some real stories. The war on drugs is a farce. There are better answers than regurgitating the same alarmist solutions that have never worked, which will NEVER work. Try this on: education, harm reduction and legalization.

Start there. And back to the music for me.

When you’ve been in the game as long as Kaskade has, you’re bound to set some records. He was the first EDM artist to single-handedly headline the Staples Center back in 2012, in addition to his legendary set last year at Coachella. Now, the dance music goliath is scheduled to break records yet again, as he will take over the Los Angeles Convention Center on May 7th. Kaskade will be flying solo and his performance will be sponsored by none other than Exchange LA and Insomniac Events. He will be the first electronic dance music artist to ever play the LACC.

The Chicago native toyed with fans, holding a scavenger hunt of sorts. In keeping with his playful approach, Kaskade left cardboard cutouts of himself at iconic locations in Los Angeles, promising that whoever took pictures of themselves with the cutouts first would receive a free pair of tickets to the massive event. It’s been a huge year for Kaskade (Ryan Raddon), whose PR team spent the better part of the first half of 2015 issuing exciting announcements about the Grammy-nominated DJ’s career. First it was his major label signing to Warner Bros Music, then it was his multi-year residency at Las Vegas’ XS and Encore Beach Club (which recently underwent a $10 million renovation).

Now Kaskade is offering fans a chance to join him in both exciting ventures with a new promo: If you purchase a ticket to one of his upcoming residency dates in Vegas, you will automatically receive a digital download of his first major label release on its street date. He has been dropping tracks off the album in his live sets, premiering ‘Never Sleep Alone‘ earlier this year at Coachella and ‘Disarm You‘ at Electric Daisy Carnival. ‘Never Sleep Alone’ has since seen more than 10 million streams and the rip the DJ uploaded of ‘Disarm You’ less than two weeks ago has received more than 100,000 hits on Soundcloud.
