Before the Super Bowl began this past Sunday, there were early reports that Justin Timberlake was “100 percent ready to use the hologram” for his Prince tribute during his Super Bowl halftime show performance. Turns out, however, he backed out at the very last minute.

It was those same early reports that caused social media backlash for Timberlake from both users and Prince fans. Prince’s longtime pal Sheila had also reaffirmed there would be no hologram in the tweet below.

Family, I spoke w/Justin 2nite and he shared heartfelt words of respect for Prince & the Purple fans. I look 4wrd 2 seeing what I’m sure is going 2 be a spectacular halftime show. There is no hologram. 🙏🏽💋 pic.twitter.com/mhVXBfBa1B

— SheilaEdrummer (@SheilaEdrummer) February 4, 2018

Sheila had also hinted on an interview on Entertainment Tonight that she had nixed the idea personally. She had stated, “I just said no. I just felt that it was too soon” & “The hologram was weird, and Prince did tell me to make sure nobody ever does a hologram of him. He thought it was very demonic and that’s his spiritual beliefs.”

A source close to Timberlake however had also stated “There’s no way Justin would ever disrespect Prince’s legacy. He didn’t change his performance.” Timberlake ultimately decided to go with the performance seen on Sunday, which consisted of a duet with Prince projected on a massive curtain.

Prince’s estate said in a statement:

“Justin Timberlake, the NFL and the City of Minneapolis used the stadium and the city to give a beautiful hometown tribute to Prince. The two pieces of footage that appeared on the screens were licensed from the ‘Purple Rain’ movie and a vintage performance in Syracuse, NY.”

Jack Ü, an act that is also credited with blurring genre lines, chose to end its set with a massive tribute to Prince.

Another major act that went above and beyond to pay tribute to the musical icon was LCD Soundsystem, who played an emotional rendition of his song “Controversy”.

Prince is so widely appreciated by the musical community due to the fact that he was a truly unique person, on top of being extremely talented. In many ways, he represents certain traits that every artist should strive for. He was a talented multidisciplinary artist, who is credited for shattering racial and gender stereotypes. He is well known for heavily supporting the careers of many female musicians. Prince, a guitar virtuoso, could play percussion, a variety of synthesizers and bass. His use of new age sounds and his willingness to break down barriers, both socially, musically and sexually, has been extremely significant in propelling our society and music industry forward. Prince embodies an era that has since passed, but will never be forgotten because so much of his work has truly inspired the art and music of today. Watch him cover Radiohead’s “Creep” at Coachella below.

Even though 24 hours have now passed, Prince’s death is still making headlines around the world. The whole process feels similar to the passing of fellow musical icon David Bowie, who died roughly four months ago. Shortly after Bowie’s death, Canadian DJ Skratch Bastid saluted him by uploading a routine featuring some of the star’s greatest hits. The video ended up going viral and is currently sitting at over 11 million views. Now, Skratch Bastid is showing his respect for Prince in a similar fashion with a new routine for the legendary musician.

In the video’s description, Skratch Bastid discusses the conflicting feelings he faces after the death of a famous musician. He is truly put in a tough situation, but we feel that his tributes are an excellent way for the electronic music community to honor some of the greatest artists who have ever lived. Read Skratch Bastid’s full post below:

RIP Prince.
Can you believe that is a thing? 2016 has been a rough one for music, eh? We’ve been losing legends almost weekly. Like, seriously, actually weekly. It’s messed up.

Since posting the Bowie routine, I’ve been getting tons of requests for tribute videos every time a musician passes away. It’s a pretty weird thing to deal with, to be honest. I’m all about giving our legends the respect they deserve, but I don’t like to do it in the wake of their death or just because their name is in the headlines.

So when I heard the news of Prince passing away, I was slow to hit the turntables like I did when I heard the news about Bowie. Not because Prince meant less to me, not even close — but because I only wanted to do it if & when it felt natural. At the end of our busy day, my wife and I listened to just about every Prince record we own. And when we came across the doubles of the “Kiss” 12″, I started messing around with it, having fun, and getting excited about his music, as I always do when it’s played. And so I decided again to put a tribute together, late last night/early this morning when North America is pretty still and not begging for attention, and this is it.

I will miss Prince dearly. I will continue to celebrate his music in my sets and in my spare time. Love for great music should always be evolving, and I discovered new songs of his today through the shares of others celebrating and mourning. His music will live on with all of us, as I’m sure he would have wanted it. May this video bring you positive energy to a sad time. Rest In Peace, Prince Rogers Nelson.

As many of you have probably heard, seen, or read by now, a musical genius and cultural icon is no longer with us. At the mere age of 57, Prince Roger Nelson was officially pronounced dead at his Paisley Park residence earlier today (April 21st, 2016). What has come to many around the world as unexpected and shocking news has lead to a whirlwind of online activity, from fans, artists, and media outlets alike. As 2016 has taken yet another beloved representative individuality, freedom, expression, and love, we’re left with little choice but to pay tribute in whatever little way we can. The following attempt to try and encompass the true gravity and the impact of this one man’s influence on the world will fail; as a music publication and news outlet, to simply announce a death and ignore the life would be a severe disservice to not only our audience, but the whole of the music community…

“Time is a mind construct. It’s not real.”

Much is still unknown regarding the details of Prince’s death. Earlier this month Prince postponed his upcoming show in Atlanta, Georgia, to fight off an ongoing bout of the flu. As one with great strength, pride, charisma…and privacy, it wouldn’t come as much of a surprise if Prince has been fighting off something of greater significance; the fact that he managed to push on to not only perform in Atlanta on the 14th, but throw an additional late night party at his own residence on the following Saturday, left people to believe he was in good health. However, trying to determine his health status on such little information is essentially conjecture. All we know for now (updates pending) comes from the local county sheriff’s office.

“Carver Country Sheriff Jim Olson reports that on April 21, 2016, at about 9:43 am, sheriff’s deputies responded to a medical call at Paisley Park Studios in Chanhassen. When deputies and medical personnel arrived, they found an unresponsive adult male in the elevator. First responders attempted to provide lifesaving CPR, but were unable to revive the victim. He was pronounced dead at 10:07am. He has been identified as Prince Rogers Nelson (57) of Chanhassen.

The Carver County Sheriff’s Office, with the assistance of the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office and The Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office, are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding his death.”

“The gatekeepers must change.”

I think I speak for more than just myself when I say there’s a heavy heavy regret in not getting to know his music more closely. Beyond the passing acknowledgement of his music and the occasional reference to “Purple Rain,” or his unique unpronounceable name, many in the millennial generation probably can’t quite argue for credentials as hyper-fans and avid followers of his vast 39-studio-album discography. And there’s nothing wrong with that. There’s nothing wrong with recognizing the fact that while we’re all taking to our respective favored platforms to express sorrows and respect, that the bulk of us aren’t the most knowledgeable Prince fans. There’s nothing wrong with it because that’s not what Prince’s influence is limited to. Not from the consumer perspective, and more importantly not from our perspective as youths.

If you seek to read and vicariously recall the nostalgia of Prince’s life, visit the good folks at WIRED. If you’re looking for an expedited timeline of his greatest hits, HYPTRAK! Or the Verge, The New Yorker, USA Today, and so on and so on. There innumerable ways in which we can read, recount, and understand what exactly Prince was as a musician and performer. It’s not something you’ll gain here, because quite frankly I haven’t seen him live, and can’t adequately explain his prominence. His actions as a musician have earned him more than just a recollection of what he represented as a sexy guitarist, scintillating singer, or master craftsmen of a writer though…

“A strong spirit transcends rules.”

His music, his words, his fashion, and ability to perpetually reinvent himself all served as the vessel for an affirmation of something people have sought for generations, and will continue to seek for years to come. An affirmation that being true to oneself is the key to being truly free. An affirmation that you’re not only allowed, but encouraged to embrace everything that you are and to share it with those around you. He showed the ultimate form of protest was to simply be yourself, that in being unleashing all the originality, thoughts, and feelings confined in oneself and eschewing all the standards and social constructs we’re taught to swallow as an acceptance of reality is the only way to legitimately push the envelope and make a difference. Think about the potential impact this would have on LGBT rights, gender equality, racial equality.

For Prince I’m sure this could have been many things, but most obviously he tapped into this psyche through provocative expression of emotions: love, heartbreak, joy, anguish, lust…sex. Track titles like “Do Me, Baby,” and “Soft and Wet” may pass as normal today, but imagine releasing it to a significantly more conservative 70s and 80s crowd, or “Pussy Control” in the 90s, or even “Sexy Motherfucker” in 2007. Emotion of this sort had long been relegated to base-impulses, frowned upon or at least hidden in the social shadows. What better way to let people know they’re not alone with these feelings than to sing about it! His work acted as one of many catalysts for a social awakening that can only be achieved through music, and while he might not have intended on doing it in good company, he had quite a lot of help.

“The gatekeepers must change.” A simple and daunting facet of life. No matter how you’d like to frame this quote, it rings eerily true. Be it in life or through death, there will forever be a changing of the guard. There will always be those who stand tall among the rest, and who represent anything from a mentality to a movement. Prince was one of them. David Bowie was one of them. Michael Jackson was one of them. Their deaths represent something I hope we’re ready to uptake, and that’s a mantel of repsonsibility (*queue Halo Theme*) to impart the affirmation unto the generations below our own. As so many of those who once told us it was ok to be weird have left us, it’s evident that duty is falling upon us. Whether you’re a musician, a visual artist, a comic, a journalist, or even a politician, your time to lead is now.

It sucks to be honest. It sucks that the realization has to come at the expense of a beautiful life. It sucks that it’s a job entirely in its own right. It sucks to know that it will be an endless cycle, limited only by the confines of time itself (and as Prince says…time is not real). Yet, while the task is daunting, it’s a beautiful opportunity. It’s a chance for our favorite artists and leaders (or you!) to steer the ship in a new direction, always pushing forward. And the rest of us get to be along for the ride.

Reactions

To assert that Prince’s life and music are unrelated or inconsequential to dance music – or ‘electronic’ dance music specifically – would be an assertion characterized by either vast oversight due to lack of interest, or an unfortunate misunderstanding of the music and how every form of it is interconnected. Prince’s style sought to add flare and tenacity to pop, and a new style emerged. Bound by no genre, he pioneered a sound that reached millions of people, earning him 7 Grammy’s, 100 million record sales (not streams…) and an Academy Award for Purple Rain. Even today his music is capable of commanding a crowd to dance, and let loose. His work influenced and inspired countless professionals today, but as an EDM blog, let’s highlight some of the reactions from a generous selection of our favorite artists:

The music world is in mourning today, as legendary recording artist Prince has been found dead in his home recording studio Paisley Park. Authorities were called to the property early this morning and the news has since been confirmed by his publicist. He had apparently been suffering from flu-like symptoms for several weeks.

In a career that spanned over three decades, Prince managed to become one of the most influential figures in American popular culture. He has sold over 100 million records worldwide and is one of the few musicians to win a Grammy, Golden Globe and Academy Award. Our thoughts go out to his family and friends.

Have you ever taken a video of you and your friends at a festival only to have it taken down by YouTube due to the song being played in the background? Of course you have, and an Appeals Court just ruled that music labels might be reaching too far with their take down notices. The case at hand is known as the “dancing-baby case” because it all started in 2007 when Stephanie Lenz uploaded a video of her toddler dancing to a Prince song. After a takedown notice was issued, the Electronic Frontier Foundation took up the case pro bono arguing that Universal Music‘s takedown practices violated the Digital Millenium Copyright Act.

In short, the DMCA is a way for websites to avoid copyright liability for content hosted on their sites. However, in order for websites to avoid running afoul of this law, they must react very quickly to takedown notices. In a copyright suit, the person with the potentially infringing content is allowed to raise the defense of “fair use”, where the copyrighted material is used for purposes such as commentary, search engines, parody, news reporting, teaching, or scholarship. However, Universal Music Group wanted that to only apply after a lawsuit had been filed against a potential infringer. Many of us can agree that while our festival videos are great to post, they’re probably not worth a full fledged lawsuit to defend.

Luckily, the Court sided with Ms. Lenz and delivered a victory for all of us. The Court held that Universal (and all labels going forward) must consider possible “fair use” before issuing a takedown notice. The case will move forward and Universal will have to prove that it did in fact consider fair use before issuing the takedown notice for the original video. While this is a victory for fair use, its a marginal one because computer-automated screening may already be enough to prove that the label “considered fair use” for the purposes of this ruling. At the very least, this is a step in the right direction and a sign that courts won’t let music labels completely bully music sharing into silent submission.
