With Apple’s iPhone X sales dropping, many are wondering what their plan is for this years iPhone. Apple cut production orders after the first three months on the market but the iPhone X still managed to make three times more money than every Android manufacturer in Q4 of 2017 (Counterpoint). With Apple’s high starting price point of the iPhone X, they did not have to outsell other companies to come out ahead.

To compete globally with other manufacturers like Android, Apple may be releasing a more affordable phone this year. According to KGI Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, two 6.1 inch LCD iPhone models could be released this year; one with a singular SIM setup, and one with a dual SIM setup. The LCD screen will allow for a dramatic price decrease compared to the OLED display used in the iPhone X.

The single SIM phone could cost between $550-$650, while the dual SIM phone could cost anywhere between $650-$750. The LCD screen would not be as visually pleasing as the OLED display found in the iPhone X, but would boast a much larger display. Additionally, the LCD model would have the same notch on the front of the phone, but due to limitations, it will not have an edge to edge display.

Premium Models

Ming-Chi Kuo also predicts that along with the cheaper LCD models, Apple may also release two new premium models: A 5.8 inch OLED model and a 6.5 inch OLED model. Unfortunately, the starting price for these still stand at around $1,100 according to analysts from UBS. Apple has yet to release any information regarding it’s 2018 models, but we will have to wait till the official launch with Tim Cook in September.

Apple‘s latest installment for the iPhone lately has been on a steady decline, and it seems Samsung has taken note of that. Samsung Electronics has decided to slow down production at it’s OLED panel plant after Apple’s decision to reduce iPhone X output due to weak customer demand recently.

While the original plan was for the South Korean company to supply organic light emitting diode panels for almost 50 million iPhones, it seems that they have now decided to cut that in more than half. Samsung is now looking to produce panels for about less than 20 million iPhones for their January-March quarter.

While the company has yet to decide on their production target for the next few months, this is certainly a move that looks to impact production at its plants and facilities. With numbers looking to be dropping to about a 60% production level in plants and 50% or lower in production levels in their facilities.

Samsung hopes to recover from some of the declines by securing more orders from Chinese and other customers. Unfortunately, Apple’s struggle with the iPhone X is also affecting the production of other parts as well as bringing down memory-chip prices.

Apple is testing a feature that may be making its way to the iPhone that will be released later year: facial recognition, which could take over the current Touch ID feature we’ve all come to know so well.

Facial recognition will likely be used as an improved method of logging into your phone. According to Bloomberg Technology, Apple has been working on this new feature, which earned more data points in the tests they’ve been running than the fingerprint scan. This means it would be a more secure route to unlocking a phone. The 3-D sensors, which power the facial recognition technology, are intended to scan the face incredibly fast and with great accuracy.

The user will be able to unlock their phone within less than a few hundred milliseconds, and they wouldn’t even have to hold the phone up to their face. This will be a huge technological advancement from the the current biometric authentication method used by Samsung. Samsung implemented iris detection on its Galaxy S8, but users were able trick the phone by using pictures of other people’s irises.

There are several other updates coming to the new generation of the iPhone, including an all-screen design, glass on both sides of the phone and a stainless steel frame. Two hardware improvements will be the addition of an artificial intelligence chip and an OLED screen. The AI chip will help conserve battery life by taking over facial recognition tasks and autocorrect/typing suggestions. The OLED screen will present sharper and brightly colored images. When paired with the faster 10-nanometer processor, this iPhone could definitely be worth the wait.

Although a large part of the anticipated hardware update is still being worked on, Apple fans can expect a major change of hardware in the new iPhone. There are some difficulties the company has run into including adding the Touch ID scanner into the new screen design. Ultimately the new 3D sensors shows promise for better security and a display of great technological advancements for smartphones.
